Will Reform win any votes at the local elections?

There is no connection between Starmer and Savile

Well only that Starmer was head of the CPS at the time.

What is the connection between Farage and Savile? I don't really know what pointythings is getting at. Why does she think there's a nod to Savile?

Oh, and I thought it was pretty bad of Starmer to deflect on the gender ruling today with yet another reference to Brianna Ghey's mother and Sunak. Starmer really is a slimy toad.

When Saville could have been prosecuted.. what was the Tory Party doing??

Senior civil servants repeatedly warned Margaret Thatcher about the risks of giving Jimmy Savile a knighthood in the 1980s, one describing the broadcaster as a "strange and complex man"

Newly released documents show the ex-prime minister lobbied officials for recognition of Savile's charity work.
But mandarins rebuffed her requests, citing Savile's "manner of life" and fears he might exploit the honour.
Savile, a friend of the former PM was ultimately knighted in 1990.

Starmer of course, as head of CPS and DPP would have defended no one at all... just more right wing slurs.

That photograph was taken over six years ago so not really an indication.

That's hilarious given your penchant for dragging up newspaper articles over a decade old. 😂

Clavinova · 23/04/2025 22:59

I'm hoping that the Conservatives will be the bigger party!

I wasn't a DUP supporter either and there are plenty of pragmatic coalitions across Europe - not to mention that Jacinda Ardern had a coalition government with New Zealand First. Saying that, I find Farage an interesting character.

I remember you since the Brexit threads being a pretty consistent pro Leave poster but surely you can't think much of Farage. What has he actually done? He's a textbook populist, a walking PR machine. Parades as a man of the people when he's got a background in finance and is anything but working class. He's a classic single-issue opportunist with a knack for asking questions that will hook the masses but no workable solutions.

Nigel Farage has praised the misogynist influencer Andrew Tate for being an “important voice” for the “emasculated” and giving boys “perhaps a bit of confidence at school” in online interviews that appear to be aimed at young men over the past year.

Hadn't seen that - thanks for sharing @blossomtoes
Honestly not surprised. The Tates were flown to Florida via private jet by the MAGA crowd (but left again in a huff when they didn't get their way lol). Farage hangs out with that crowd (that's where the $$ come from) so...

There's shitting on the vulnerable and there's seemingly aligning yourself with a prolific paedo and serial sex offender by resurrecting his catchphrase in your party slogan.

I would imagine the vast majority of MAGA/MBGA people do not have a high opinion of paedophiles.

Hmm. I’d say that’s debatable. Child marriage is still alive and kicking in 38 US states (as of late 2024, latest figure I could find with a brief google). 300,000 marriages last year with the vast majority being an adult male marrying a minor female.

Trump enjoys huge support from most of those states.

I was a bit surprised when Labour said they were going to publish a league table of foreign criminals and their offences.

Same

I can see what you're saying and obviously child marriage isn't good, but isn't that like saying many people who vote right-wing are committed and vocally religious. It doesn't mean the majority are, or that religious people don't vote for other parties.

I think that the challenge for most voters is:

Labour- there were high expectations on them by many voters wanting improvement. The economic reality (low growth, high debt, high taxation, low productivity) has meant that it is simply not possible to achieve what voters want. So there is an element of disillusionment combined with anger on the tinkering around the edges such as WFA that they have done.

Conservatives- still tarnished by their time in power and to be honest Badinoch seems to be lacking any alternative way forward.

LibDems - basically tumble weed silence and no policies at all other than Trump is not a nice person (wow thanks for the insight!).

So people will vote for Reform which (like Brexit) offers sound bites for change but no substance or detail or funded plans on how to deliver "change".

Yup, people want change, so don't want the "same old" of Tories nor Labour. Libdems are irrelevant, as are the Greens. Hence why Reform WILL do very well until the Tories and/or Labour actually start listening and understanding the politically homeless voters.

TopPocketFind · 24/04/2025 20:17

People want change or just someone to blame?

Reform is all about anti-immigration, not much else.

You underestimate the intelligence of British voters and place them all on the same level as the average reform voter, like the OP, uninformed and fickle and to be frank- not very bright; driven by tik tok politics and the belief you can get positive change, growth and positivity from people like Farage, Anderson and whoever they’ve dragged into their murky deceitful and angry mob.

Sure, loads will fall for the snake oil. But lots more are far more critical and will scrutinise a party’s ability.to actually deliver positive change

Because being nasty to foreigners, becoming more isolationist still as a country (after the failed Brexit) and sucking up to the complete shambles that is the US govt right now isn’t going to cut it with the vast majority of people. Who wants yet more anger in our society, chlorine chicken/hormone beef and NHS by insurance- no one! Because that’s what reform are offering, hardly the path to success is it…,

It’s all too easy to promise moon on a stick but only a certain proportion of the U.K. are going to fall for that. Most will actually examine how we’re going to get there!

So although it’s highly likely they’ll gain ground, reform will end up with double digit MPs at best.

BIossomtoes · 24/04/2025 10:39

Ah, the Stalinist approach to history.

Not really - your link says it was Tate who posted the photo on Facebook with the caption ‘Brexit baby'. I would assume then that Tate was the one who was keen to be photographed with Farage - who at that time (six years ago) probably had a much higher profile than Tate.

TopPocketFind · 24/04/2025 20:28

Farage is also friendly with a convicted felon, he spent more time at his side across the pond than in Clacton

To be fair, your link also quotes Farage as saying;

"But I feel some of his comments were pretty horrible."

Lonelycrab · 24/04/2025 20:32

There’s no two ways with Tate though is there

You either think he’s an absolute cunt

Or you don’t. I know which side of the fence I’m on.

edit: excuse language-sometimes it’s warranted

I thought Starmer seemed very friendly to the convicted felon when he presented him with an invitation to an 'unprecedented' second state visit.

Breakitdown · 24/04/2025 20:36

Do people like the fact he plans to deploy businesses to pay less tax and deploy "fire and rehire" policies?

What about saying pensions should be means tested? Are these good policies or not?

None of that is anything like Bob the Builder.

JCB has jumped from Tory to Reform

Farage arrived on a yellow JCB - Bob the Builder has a yellow digger.

TopPocketFind · 24/04/2025 20:44

Oh dear Clavinova, you can just say that you like Farage a lot.
