Stop buying American goods. The only thing Trump understands is money. Take it away

Yes it’s the attitude, it’s a betrayal really.

International relationships between countries and their peoples are not transactional. They’re about neighbourhood, shared history and culture, mutual respect, principles and values, and caring about each others wellbeing.

You can’t put a price on any of that.

Trump will never understand. Relationships between countries are not like commercial exchanges between companies and consumers. And until America learns the hard way, we have to stand up for this.

the trust is gone.
I get that the us is flat ass broke financially but his approach to tackling the problem is insane.
employess are on paid leave at this point and broken treaties come with financial fines.
can’t imagine anyone will buy military equipment from them.

If people want to boycott American goods and also perhaps send a bit of support Ukraines way, take a look at www.dodosocks.com reasonable prices, fun designs and made in Kiev

The buyfromeu subreddit is really helpful for swaps.

I’m being realistic - I know I can’t easily swap out MS or WhatsApp. But I can swap Amazon music for Spotify. I can cancel Paramount and Now TV. I can drink Canadian pike whiskey rather than JD. Australian wines rather than Californian.

as others said - it’s not the tariffs that are the problem. After all, the EU and the UK haven’t been targeted yet. It’s the bully boy approach. The sheer vindictiveness of it all. None of these tariffs are about increasing money in the US - they are all targeting countries who Trump perceived to have slighted him.

skintbuthappyish · 08/03/2025 22:47

Nah, I'm still going to buy goods from the US and Israel too

Nah, I'm still going to buy goods from the US and Israel too

Enjoy.

Ontario took all the US booze off the shelves. 1 BILLION dollars a year. Largest market for alcohol in the world is the LCBO.

You'd better drink quick.

GildedRage · 09/03/2025 04:16

although the liquor that was on the shelves was already paid for there will be no new orders.

I wouldn’t holiday in the USA for the foreseeable. We’ve stopped using Amazon and boycotting American products and services where we can. Honestly it’s been amazing- thankfully we still have some good local shops and it’s woken me up to how much tat we’ve been accepting from Amazon. Buying local supports local business and employment. Yeah removing our money from flowing into Amazon is one tiny voice but the more people who do, the louder that voice becomes. Don’t believe you can’t make any impact. Every single penny counts. Do what you can.

What about the small local business that use Amazon to sell? Shops are not an option for this people.

dottiehens · 09/03/2025 06:18

FlamingFlamingoFluff · 08/03/2025 11:39

I’m on holiday in the Caribbean at the moment. There are a huge number of Canadians and Brits here, and several that I’ve spoken to have cancelled or rearranged USA holidays and come here instead.

A bit of digging suggests it will make a difference….and locals are also finding that Florida “snowbirds” are looking at property to buy as they sell up in the US.

https://globalnews.ca/news/11069567/us-travel-down-trump-tariff/

Trump seems to think he can delay or reverse the tariffs when he is ready and all will go back to normal - but no one here cares about the tariffs. It’s the attitude.

Oh amazing. I will start seeing places in Florida to buy to get a bargain or two. I wonder why they did not go to the Caribbean to begin with? Are we talking Aruba or Barbados?

I must said that is a hell of an amount of alcohol for the population in Ontario?

You can buy from them directly…

ThymeScent · 09/03/2025 08:14

Don’t forget to boycott Boots and other ex British companies owner by Americans.
Or don’t your ‘principles’ extend that far?

MushMonster · 09/03/2025 08:21

I am onboard. I will avoid buying products from them as far as possible.
And hoping for European companies to appear in the IT business, so will swap to them.

Abra1t · 09/03/2025 08:27

Not buying from Amazon can harm authors on low pay (average earnings £7k in the UK) and other small businesses who use it for distribution.

Meanwhile, 70% of Amazon’s operating profit comes from its web services.

As used by AstaZenecca, the BBC, some parts of the NHS.

Going to boycott them, too?

soupyspoon · 09/03/2025 08:27

Amazing how snippy and sneering people are being about a potential boycott of US goods, whats that about?

dubsie · 09/03/2025 08:27

TizerorFizz · 06/03/2025 14:56

There's so many very decent electric cars. No need to buy a Tesla. Others are just as good if not better! Shop around and don't be blinkered into think Tesla is the only EV worth buying.

The biggest difficulty is knowing what actually is American. It's not always obvious. However buying from Musk is avoidable.

Why buy an electric car, I owned one and I got totally fed up with poor range in the winter. Spent my life sitting on charging points..

I've gone back to petrol, 1.8 with 150 bhp and does 50 mpg on the motorway....I love it.

I'm all for reducing pollution but I think if people though more about the journeys they make....ie do you need the car to drive half a mile down the road to drops the kids off, we wouldn't be talking about electric

Seeing a simplistic view of a global economy?

soupyspoon · 09/03/2025 08:32

Abra1t · 09/03/2025 08:28

Seeing a simplistic view of a global economy?

Who says so?

I recall reams and reams of threads about boycotts of Isreali goods, some people as in this thread in fact are still wanting to boycott Israeli goods and no one questions that or gets snippy

People will vote with their money and its good to share ideas about how that can take place, particularly in a climate where lots of our companies have been taken over by massive coorporations who are US based.

A post above queries 'what about Boots' - well what about Boots, other chemists are available, other supermarkets are available, other items are available.

Boycotts can never been 100% as people have set out but if you believe it in as I do for the US, its about being more mindful of what you're purchasing and where your money is going

TizerorFizz · 09/03/2025 08:37

@dubsie Well some people like them! We have several cars and one is a EV. Does well over 200 miles. We just use it locally though and charge at home. We have solar panels and batteries. This makes running costs cheap. I think setup matters. All I'm saying is that the government has ev targets and don't buy Teslas!

Tishomingo · 09/03/2025 08:42

This website is hosted by a US company, AWS. You should probably leave. 😬

TizerorFizz · 09/03/2025 08:43

Also we live in the country and are not 1/2 a mile from anything we need! No buses. Most people with a ev are not going very far in them. Lots are second cars. Would not use ours for long journeys. Used ones (ours was 8 months old) are a bargain. List price £68,000 - purchase price £46,000. I'm very happy with it. I've never owned a car that did 50 mpg.

ProfessorLayton1 · 09/03/2025 08:43

Agree, there are a lot of better EV's . People liked tesla due to their charging network as they were one of the first EVs and got this infrastructure correct. I am sure other s have caught up with this now.

MushMonster · 09/03/2025 08:43

It makes full sense, not sure why some people are getting spiky about it.
Europe needs to defend itself now, and that is what Trumps wants, by the way.

So, we need the money, so keep our GDP within Europe. We also need further security away from US- make our own IT, Silicone Valley version, social media companies- it keeps the money in and makes us safer. Maybe we can avoid Russia meddling with our systems that way. Let some IT genius build us an online version of the enigma machine, Europe made for Europe, only.
That will bring this economic growth we need- manufacture our own goods, inuding a lot of software and weapons. Novel ideas.
It is a perfectly sound and reasonable way forward from this.
