Stop buying American goods. The only thing Trump understands is money. Take it away

McDonald's is an American company.

Stirabout · 11/03/2025 23:17

Looks like Americans are doing a great job atm

Musks net worth has decreased by $29bn yesterday alone due to reduction in share prices
see the Guardian

Tesla sales have dropped by 76% in Germany 🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪 Well done them !

MushMonster · 12/03/2025 06:47

It is not only a few mumsnetters.
It has made it to the news and all.

Sorry for repeating myself, but I think it's really important to understand that the main value of US stocks is in Silicone Valley, not physical goods. Even if McDonalds goes bankrupt the impact on US won't be comparable to the impact of Facebook, Amazon etc (Magnificent Seven). McD would have huge jobs impact though.

So those of us who do want to make a difference let's try our best to pause use of those Silicone Valley giants - they all support Trump big time.

Agree, although is it a case of them supporting him or just kowtowing to protect their interests?

itsnotabouthepasta · 12/03/2025 11:38

You're not wrong @nearlylovemyusername but equally, it is having a significant impact on certain states.

The withdrawal of all US booze from canadian shelves has absolutely put Kentucky in a panic. Add in the tarriffs announced by the EU this morning on certain sectors, and there will be an impact.

What I don't understand is this insane bulldozing approach. By all means, wean yourself off imports and bring manufacturing back to the US - But he doesn't seem to understand you can't just create entire production factories/supply chain infrastructure within minutes. These things take years to do.

If we was weaning off, he would have 4 years to redefine american induustry and absolutely leave it in a better place. But this torched earth approach is the ramblings of a lunatic

Edited

they brought the orange one into power. Musk was in public eye, the rest acted behind the scene.

I suggest googling Bezos and change of Washington Post policy. It's truly chilling

Given it seems like you have good alternatives, could you share them? Which was my original question…

Well, for starters, @SwingLifeAway, I log into MN via my email, not via Google nor anything else.
I stopped using Google initially not because of any paranoia, but because I don't find it to be very good. For searches I generally use Bing, which I find much, much better. Now, Bing is no paragon of integrity. But apart from that, there are a bunch of no-track options, such as DuckDuckGo. Ha - you can use Bing to search for no-track search engines!
Also, people should be aware that there are tons of free email providers who are not based in the U.S., many of whom take privacy far more seriously than Gmail or the other biggies. (Check out a site called EmailDiscussions.)
For buying products, remember that every time you order from Amazon, you are not only enriching Americans like Bezos, but you are taking income away from your own community, your own tax base. And Amazon is a terrible company! They treat their workers dreadfully, and they kill off brick-and-mortar businesses. And right now Bezos is really pandering to Trump!
Also, it pains me to say it, but anyone who really hopes for the best for America, long-term, should avoid vacationing there now. sigh
