Stop buying American goods. The only thing Trump understands is money. Take it away

It does make a difference.

As I have said before as an example Canadians have boycotted Americans good to the tune of removing American alcohol off our shelves - to the tune of one billion dollars per year in Ontario alone.

www.reuters.com/world/americas/canadians-cancel-trips-ban-american-booze-after-trumps-tariffs-2025-02-03/

We have cancelled or not booked American travel which has already reduced tourism in the US by 400 million dollars and could cost 1.2 billion to the US economy.
nypost.com/2025/02/22/us-news/canadians-cancelling-us-travel-en-masse-in-face-of-tariff-threats/

We don’t have to be passive. Boycotting American goods can work.

Be careful not to overstate the impact of these changes- the Ontario liquor announcement doesn't actually change much at all. Certainly not a meaningful amount. The removal applies to US 'made' alcohol. Most liquor sold under US brands is produced in Canada so would count as Canadian under this distinction, even if all profits would end up in the US.

Circularmadness · 05/03/2025 05:12

I wouldn’t holiday in the USA for the foreseeable. We’ve stopped using Amazon and boycotting American products and services where we can. Honestly it’s been amazing- thankfully we still have some good local shops and it’s woken me up to how much tat we’ve been accepting from Amazon. Buying local supports local business and employment. Yeah removing our money from flowing into Amazon is one tiny voice but the more people who do, the louder that voice becomes. Don’t believe you can’t make any impact. Every single penny counts. Do what you can.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/03/2025 06:18

We do not want to get into a tarif situation with Trump, or encourage it. It will be far too expensive for working people. Here's why

Trump is trying to end a war that has killed one million people. Boycott the fascist! ✊🏾

Like fuck he is

TheFirstTimeEverISawYourFace · 05/03/2025 06:51

Personally, I think calling them stupid is giving them the benefit of the doubt. Being stupid is forgivable. Being a fascist is not.

And presumably you’re advocating for a boycott of Google, Amazon, Netflix, WhatsApp and Facebook too? What non-US alternatives are there to these services?

Somebody posted a long list of American products and European equivalents on another thread and I can't find it now. I wanted to copy it but I can't find it now.

And this people is PRECISELY why the Democrats lost. Sneering and looking down on the majority of the electorate, name calling and an entirely misplaced air of smug superiority.

True....Reform will do the same here.

In one of my jobs, I get paid in Amazon vouchers. A bit difficult to boycott them!

Its a moot point. According to Ukrainian figures 43, 000. Russia figures unclear. Does that make it more palatable?

It doesn't mean that many people aren't uneducated and believe the lies they are sold though does it?

I thought Trump and Nigel were proponents of free speech?

These idiots are turkeys voting for xmas. No matter why.

Thats unusual, what’s the job? I’d try to negotiate a different payment but you can only do what you can and if it’s not possible then so be it.

soupyspoon · 05/03/2025 07:45

Interesting reaction to your thread OP.

I seem to recall many posters whole heartedly agreeing with posters who suggest boycotting Israeli products, yet the suggestion to boycott American products is laughed at or sneered at

I will be doing my best to ensure that I dont buy American products, it wont be wholesale because of the infiltration of their products to everything in our lives in the UK but it will be something

FinanceLPlates · 05/03/2025 07:47

It’s certainly sobering to realise how dominant American companies are particularly in the tech/online sector. And often the only serious competitors are Chinese which is not exactly inspiring confidence either.

And it goes deep - I don’t think people think about the fact that virtually all modern websites are hosted in “the cloud“ - sounds nice and nebulous but it just means “other people’s computers”. The biggest cloud providers? Amazon (aws), Google, Microsoft Azure…
This includes UK government websites btw.
Oh, and who dominates the corporate software market?

BobnLen · 05/03/2025 07:51

It's quite easy to boycott what you don't use, I will boycott Facebook, WhatsApp, Microsoft and Tesla as an example.

I doubt many people were going to buy one anyway.

merrymelodies · 05/03/2025 07:59

Here in Canada we're fighting back by boycotting as many American products as we possibly can. Trump is trying to destroy our already weak economy with his damned tariffs. Fuck him! 🤬

Neveranynamesleft · 04/03/2025 21:42

Seriously?

Quite. Why on earth would I make my life harder in order to have little to no effect. Virtual signalling OP.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 05/03/2025 08:41

It's a bit tricky for me as a Tube employee, or anyone who uses a barrier on London's TfL services, to boycott the USA. The Oyster card, the barrier, and the software comes from the United States. The ticket machines are also American. Should I quit?

I also use a Google phone, a Ninja Foodi, PS4 (yes I know I'm out of date) and I love American food. Soz.

You do you. The whole virtue signalling put down is so shit- I don’t walk about telling everyone or indeed anyone what I’m doing but I do believe in the (collective) power of small changes making big differences

Couldn't afford a car Tesla even if I desired one.
