So does "far right" mean you're concerned about the impacts of mass immigration?

Cause I'm far right if so then!

Genuinely interested to hear what people consider as being "far right". I put it in quotation marks cause the term is so over-used incorrectly, it's actually lost all meaning.

My main concern with immigration is that of housing. There is a serious housing crisis in the UK. Social housing stock has been diminished by right to buy....and is in huge demand. Private rents are through the roof. House prices are out of sync with wages. Yet last year net migration was 3/4 million. It doesn't matter if it's legal migration.... everyone needs a roof over their head and there's not enough and it's not affordable.

For those of you who think people with concerns over immigration are racist/far right....do you believe we should have completely open borders? If not, why not?

Even if we took immigration out of the issue we still have an issue with housing, immigration has made it slightly worse but even with no immigration we still weren't built enough.

Sussurations · 03/01/2025 18:17

I think most people have concerns about immigration. I know I do, and you might say I’ve become more ‘right wing’ over the last decade or so. I’m not sure that really expresses it, I didnt see our last Tory govt doing anything about immigration except use horrible rhetoric, so I’m not convinced it’s a left/right wing thing.

However, there are people who make everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, into a conversation about immigrants. look at daily mail or Spectator comments on literally any story! These people may be far right, I would describe them as unhinged and racist.

Slightly worse? According to ons statistics, since 2000, 11.4 million immigrants have come to the UK. That is a huge number.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 03/01/2025 18:24

No. It means they're a bigoted twat dressing up racism as concern.

Not ever heard a far righter campaigning for white Australians or white Americans or any other English speaking and white people to go back to where they came from.

Funny that concern comes with a colour chart.

How many people in the uk emigrated to other countries in that time?

How many people in the uk emigrated to other countries in that time?

I don't think it's even particularly relevant...but just under 7 million apparently . But we have far less control over who leaves versus who arrives don't we? Last year 1.2 million people arrived...and net migration was about 3/4 million. Do you think that was sensible considering the housing crisis? And do you think we should have open borders between us and every country in the world?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 03/01/2025 18:39

It's relevant in so far as the rabid right wingers (as opposed to balanced right leaning people) are all screaming about all the black and brown people coming here, taking our jobs, stealing our women... yet never consider that migration is a two way street.

It's particularly laughable when they themselves are living in other countries, calling themselves expats, voting for brexit and complaining about all the brown people taking over the uk.

Not every right wing person is a racist nutter, not by a long shot, but all racist nutters spout extreme right wing views.

I agree with your last paragraph and much of what you have said.

But the facts remain the same. Migration was 1.2 million and net migration was circa 750,000 last year. Yes some people leave and yes there are often double standards regarding that. But immigration levels are high. That's not a particularly controversial statement. Im not anti immigration and I don't think we should have zero immigration, that would be ridiculous....I do however believe the levels are too high.

Again...do you think we should have open borders with every country in the world?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 03/01/2025 18:45

Oh. Didn't answer your question.
We have the housing crisis we've created. A lot can be done about that.
Anyone from any country in the world should be free to come here if they can fill jobs, have skills that the country needs and can therefore support themselves.

I'm not including refugees here obviously. Everyone should be able to get to a place of safety, regardless whether they can at that point, work.

No we shouldn't have open borders and we don't have open borders and there's no suggestion we're going to have open borders.

"Far right" is anything that people on the left don't like.

If you’re ’genuinely curious’, and not just in service to the crypto-fascists by means of a little light obfuscation, ALL of the info. you need on what far-right means is available on Wikipedia.

Nice try though.

I can't use the word concerned because I don't trust the sources of information available anymore.

If I can access reliable believable data on immigration then I can form a viewpoint.

I think we don't always have enough information available to us and we see snapshots. How can I know what's going on in certain coastal towns where I imagine there's a stronger view unless I'm living there and experiencing it. Maybe they have a point. Maybe they aren't all racist. Maybe it's racism.

Do I think immigration is causing all our societal ills? No. Is it possible it could make things worse? Yes I could believe that. Do I have enough evidence? No.

Comedycook · 03/01/2025 18:57

No we shouldn't have open borders and we don't have open borders and there's no suggestion we're going to have open borders.

I know there's no suggestion of that.

My point is that unless that's your stance, you must have some concerns over immigration? Otherwise you'd be happy for completely open borders wouldn't you?

Not true. Many left wing people have problems with the colour of people's skin or religion. They just probably don't happen to be the ones you have in mind.

Is there no medium? Is it not possible to welcome limited immigration without having a free for all?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/01/2025 19:00

It's shorthand for the people who have learned that 'I'm not being racialist, but...' is well known as the way to herald an incoming racist statement and have rephrased it as 'I'm concerned about...'.

HTH.

For many far right is anyone slightly to the right from Corbyn,

This tendency to smear will land us all with a Farrage government.

What nonsense. It's the type of shite GB News peddles to pretend that they are not far right.

Gosh yes, that's my point which you are continually missing.

The two extreme views are

Absolutely no immigration at all.

Totally open borders

Virtually no one wants either of these two things to happen.

Vast vast majority of people think there should be a meet in the middle approach.

But my point was that unless you believe in totally open borders, you will have some concerns over numbers? And you will recognise that not all migration is entirely beneficial.

Therefore not everyone who has concerns can be far right can they?

That's a very old fashioned approach though. Bit of a 90s trope. Sadly I think we are well beyond that now.

Nordione1 · 03/01/2025 19:04

It's currently the number 1 concern of people in this country. So unless we have all become facists by mistake without realising it, I think concern about excess migration is a very main stream view to have at the moment.

Or is that lost at you?
