Never seen anything like the U.S. fury and panic

It's really been astonishing how in the last few days, people - mostly of the liberal Democratic party - are staggering with fury and panic over the latest from Trump. It reminds me of the awfulness of his first round, where every morning I would cringe to hear on the radio of a new outrage or scandal.

At present, Trump just nominated for Attorney General, the highest law enforcement office in the country, Matt Gaetz, who, among other crimes, has been under a cloud for sex-trafficking of minors. ("The investigation focused on his alleged involvement with a 17-year-old and whether he had paid for sex or paid for women to travel across state lines for sex, which would violate trafficking laws.")

May be it is their own fault? What did they offered to people apart for not being Trump? I read yesterday that they are 20 millions in debt for the Harris/ Waltz electoral campaign. It seems than the US dodge a bullet if they can’t even handle that well. So yes fury and panic and debt as they are clueless. Frankly I hope they look back to the campaign and feel embarrassed.

I see you are posting all the time about being against democracy in the US. Trump has a clear mandate so take it to the democrats. I personally hope it goes well and people unite.

Sometimes its simply not possible to overcome a populist like Trump, he "captures" people, i don't mean in the literal sense but in his rhetoric, his personality.
Harris or any "normal" politician, could not out trump Trump.

Don't know where you live but if its Europe, Trump may well prove to be disasterous for us....Ukraine, Nato and Tariffs....

What they do about migration, vaccines and abortions, whilst utter madness and/or cruel, won't affect us, they voted for it, including women and migrant communities.

awayforxmas · 15/11/2024 16:03

Can anyone guess what will happen with Ukraine and Israel/Palestine now? Wasn't trump friends with putin?

OvaHere · 15/11/2024 16:06

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 15/11/2024 08:58

Fuck sake. A vaccine conspiracist as health secretary!

The current Democrat incumbent is also a seriously dodgy choice. RFK Jr is marginally better. Not by much but it seems to be a low bar of late.

It would be great if the 2028 administration (of either party) could find some centre ground.

The whole thing is a shitshow. Especially, but not exclusively, Elon Musk buying his way into the US government.

When Trump and Musk fall out with each other, it will be spectacular. They both have history of dealing badly with dissent.

Trump is pally with all the dictators, he admires them.

I think he'll withdraw funding from Ukraine and the ME genocide will be trickier. Biden was unpopular because he was funding it but Trump is very pro Israel. I think he'll hold back on any restraints and let Israel do what it wants as he's very isolationist.

Withdrawing from NATO will be trickier.

OvaHere · 15/11/2024 16:10

I can't imagine the Gaetz appointment being approved but then again...

laveritable · 15/11/2024 16:25

The injustice that Diddy has been refused bail and trump and his loonies are running riot?

Ukraine will be forced to give up land, for "peace" & Putin will then re arm and come back and take the lot... that'll be 10s of millions of Ukrainians heading West too.

The Palestinians are finished now.

potatocakesinprogress · 15/11/2024 16:44

I haven't seen fury and panic and I watch CNN daily and have plenty of US friends and colleagues.

They were quiet and sad when it happened but it's not like they're planning an insurrection. They have also taken practical steps like sorting out birth control/emergency birth control.

There's no point caring who he appoints because they'll all be fired within six months of him starting anyway. But I am grabbing my popcorn for when him and Elon Musk fall out because it's going to be one heck of of a blowup.

I still think the Israelis fixed it like they fixed Eurovision.

Only half joking.

I can see Musk using the Brexit tactics of big data a la Cambridge Analytica to snag the independents in swing states though.

Seems odd to me that something that was apparently so close has been wider than it's ever been without any interference...I would see it if he'd won by a bit, but to win by that much seems unlikely.

KeepinOn · 15/11/2024 16:50

Stop stoking the fires of panic OP, this is ridiculous. The majority of Americans elected Trump. Loads of swing voters and lifelong Dems couldn't stomach what the Democratic party has grown to represent - i.e., Not Them. Women and minorities voted against the Democrats and why? That's what we need to understand and focus on, because as of today, the Republican party is more diverse and inclusive than the Democratic party.

It's going to be very interesting to watch this play out.

YankTank · 15/11/2024 17:06

BruFord · 15/11/2024 15:11

One point to bear in mind is that Trump has only nominated these Cabinet members, they also need to approved by the Senate.

Although the Republicans have a majority in the Senate, they only have 53 seats, which aren’t enough to confirm these nominees. Even if every Republican voted for a nominee, they’d still need votes from some Democrats.

I honestly don’t think that moderate Republican senators will vote for the more extreme candidates and Democrats certainly won’t. So they’re not all going to be approved.

Edited

There’s a clause that he can push them through whilst the Senate is in recess.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 15/11/2024 17:15

@username358 I was really surprised so many people said they would vote for Trump to save the ME, and stop the war. Thats hardly not going to happen, with him such a fan of Israel. .

I'm highly sceptical that all is at it seems

If the consequences were less severe globally it would make for an enjoyable Friday night watch with popcorn. It was a terrible combination of Trump fan stupidity and the Democrats making themselves completely unelectable by focusing on lunatic fringe ideology instead of normal people.

I pray to God that Labour are watching very fucking carefully.

This is my dilemma. In one way I'm looking forward to the consequences as a lot of people are going to have egg on their faces.

However, there are people who didn't vote for this and don't deserve what's coming. There's going to be a lot of drama.

User135644 · 15/11/2024 17:31

Democrats, as in 2016, only have themselves to blame.

I can't even enjoy it. I have a friend in USA with life-threatening health issues. She's already in extreme difficulty paying her bills and is waiting and hoping she will qualify for disability payments. Yet she voted for Trump and defends him. Any negative mention of the orange buffoon is treated like sacrilege. Her life will be immeasurably worse now than before. I literally cannot understand her thinking.

SweetSixty · 15/11/2024 17:34

That any woman was prepared to vote for Trump after his 'grab 'em by the pussy' comment is a mystery to me.

I imagine she's capable of researching and understanding the consequences of voting for Trump. If she suffers because of her choices then that's her responsibility.

I understand that there's going to be a slash and burn attitude towards welfare and medical help. She will have been aware of that when she voted.

SweetSixty · 15/11/2024 17:38

Why would people vote for this? Why would any leaders want this for their country?

Because like with Reagan the rich get richer and poor get poorer isn't an election pledge.

That the Democrats have allowed the Republicans to outflank them as pro working class America, is a terrible indictment on them.

Because the poor and immigrants get scapegoated when people are being screwed over. They don't understand why they're worse off when they work so hard.

Then everyone who benefits points towards the least powerful in society and blames them. The beneficiaries include those who own and run the media and social media.

People are fed a non stop diet of information telling them that the powerless are responsible for everything wrong with society. They become a lightening rod for people's frustration and rage.

Even people who stand to lose the most, vote against their own interests. Naysayers are branded 'woke' 'communists' and 'anti American'.

I have as much sympathy for them as I do for people who voted for Brexit.

wordler · 15/11/2024 18:17

Trump got 50.09% of the popular vote this time (so far, there are still some mailed in votes being counted I think)

There was definitely something off/odd about the last few weeks before the election.

Elon Musk throwing billions at the campaign and promising people money for voting - $1M a day!

Trump mumbling about a 'little secret' plan they had if the voting didn't go their way. And telling Christians that if they voted for him they'd never have to vote again.

It's going to be a seriously awful four years - if the first two are bad enough and the Dems can take back Congress then the final two years might be slightly mitigated.

Musk's involvement worries me the most - although as PP have said he may not be able to stand Trump for long.

Echobelly · 15/11/2024 18:31

If there is ever a Democrat government in an actual United States of America, they will have a impossible job of rebuilding government once Trump and co have filled the federal support system with corporate cronies and (mostly inadvertantly) Russian assets. Obviously, in all likelihood there are some of those already, not going to pretend the Dems are perfection, but this will be a whole other level of corruption and incompetence.

Trump and co will end up doing all the things they accused the 'Deep State' of doing - rampant corruption and cronyism, propaganda in schools, damaging public health, ending free speech for the media and for individuals etc. And probably actually covering up lots of sexual abuse by their pals into the bargain.
