Never seen anything like the U.S. fury and panic

It's really been astonishing how in the last few days, people - mostly of the liberal Democratic party - are staggering with fury and panic over the latest from Trump. It reminds me of the awfulness of his first round, where every morning I would cringe to hear on the radio of a new outrage or scandal.

At present, Trump just nominated for Attorney General, the highest law enforcement office in the country, Matt Gaetz, who, among other crimes, has been under a cloud for sex-trafficking of minors. ("The investigation focused on his alleged involvement with a 17-year-old and whether he had paid for sex or paid for women to travel across state lines for sex, which would violate trafficking laws.")

The whole thing is a shitshow. Especially, but not exclusively, Elon Musk buying his way into the US government.

OSU · 15/11/2024 02:33

It's like a celebrity weirdo cabinet with evil James Bondesque villainry (add in the Russians assassinating people in inventive ways and you could genuinely be in Dr No).

The majority of Americans voted for Trump, they knew what they were getting and they came out in their droves and voted for him.

They obviously enjoyed Trump part 1 which ended in an insurrection. The military have been in talks about what to do should he order them to turn on civilians.

Anything he does is temporary, this is his last term - we hope. I'm looking forward to the people thumbing their noses at Democrats getting royally screwed over.

I'm not feeling smug about those who stand to lose a lot. There was a woman on Twitter who was harassed by arseholes telling her Trump was going to kick her out. She was very upset.

I imagine that racism, homophobia and misogyny is going to go rise exponentially. He's a pied piper for bigots. He's also going to make his chums a lot richer and the poor a lot poorer. I believe they're going to stop a lot of state help such as welfare and medical treatment.

Instead they're going to devote an awful amount of time and expense on illegal immigrants. Money that could be spent on helping people out of poverty is going to be spent on rounding up and deporting people.

There will be further deregulation, tax breaks for the rich and American businesses will be sold off to the highest bidder. One in four American pigs is now owned by a Chinese company for example and that will increase

The government already looks like the Adam's Family and it's just going to get worse.

Summerhillsquare · 15/11/2024 04:12

Although the individuals are utterly grim and the very worst of human behaviour, a good bit of me suspects that is a useful distraction from the real business, which is grift.

Last time the orange twat gave humongous tax breaks and increased inequality to unseen levels, also promoted corruption. They are there to fill their already capacious pockets, but this time on a permanent basis, as they will further undermine democracy too.

DarkForces · 15/11/2024 04:16

When Biden won Trump supporters stormed the Capitol and rioted. Not sure they're in any position to criticise

SpidersAreShitheads · 15/11/2024 04:29

I hoped that my absolute dismay at the election result was misplaced, and my dislike of the corrupt orange manchild was clouding my view of the politics.

But no.

His appointments in the last few days confirm exactly what I feared.

And the least said about Elon Musk using his billions to sway voters and now buy his way into Trump’s inner circle, the better.

You have what you voted for America. Best of luck.

(Obviously if you didn’t vote for Trump then I have full sympathy for you having to live through the shitshow. I thought the Tories were bad enough but they’re absolute saints compared to MAGA-Man).

Needmoresleep · 15/11/2024 04:47

It is about time the Democrats started looking at why people did not vote for them.

They may be right that Trump is awful. Yet despite this they failed to get the popular vote.

May be it is their own fault? What did they offered to people apart for not being Trump? I read yesterday that they are 20 millions in debt for the Harris/ Waltz electoral campaign. It seems than the US dodge a bullet if they can’t even handle that well. So yes fury and panic and debt as they are clueless. Frankly I hope they look back to the campaign and feel embarrassed.

I see you are posting all the time about being against democracy in the US. Trump has a clear mandate so take it to the democrats. I personally hope it goes well and people unite.

Fuck sake. A vaccine conspiracist as health secretary!

Mittens67 · 15/11/2024 09:17

I wonder how many Americans will want to leave the country? If they can afford it or have the opportunity of course. Not attainable for most even if they wanted to.
Or will there be a resistance movement similar to occupied France in WW2?
Trump is so vindictive to anyone who disagrees with him and his supporters are so violent that I can see an underground movement could be needed to keep those trying to save the country safe.
I fear for the DA Fani Willis who so bravely took him on for election interference and Ruby Freeman who worked in the vote counting office or Eric Coomer who worked for Dominion which made the counting machines Trump lied were changing votes in 2020.
All these people and many others have been under death threats from Trump and his fellow nutters.

That was my thoughts..Musk has connotations of a bond villain.
Trump has surrounded himself with yes people and some of them are unhinged.

Bettergetthebunker · 15/11/2024 09:28

My first thoughts when Musk got a job was the Netflix film “don’t look up”. I cannot be the only one.

ZoeHS · 15/11/2024 09:58

Absolute shit show. The megalomaniac man children running this world need a good talking to, not that they’ll listen.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/14/trump-administration-rfk-criticisms

There are also plans to get rid of the Department of Education, which I assume would give states more control; on one level makes sense but then you remember some states want to ban sex education, make teachers carry guns in school and promote homophobia, racism and transphobia. Terrifying.

If I was in America I’d be buying a one-way ticket out of there.

Yup. I feel like the entire world is living “don’t look up” right now.

kirinm · 15/11/2024 10:02

I'm kind of looking forward to the Americans who think Trump is going to reduce the cost of every day essentials, finding out it's a global issue and he can't fix anything.

Singleandproud · 15/11/2024 10:21

Those who can leave will. Eva Longoria who was a big hitter for the Democrats has moved out and I suspect lots of other actors and creatives who will likely be left leaning will taking their wealth with them leaving the poor and rich business(men) to it

HowardTJMoon · 15/11/2024 10:34

Who knows, maybe this time he really will MAGA, replace the ACA with a much better system, build the wall and make Mexico pay for it etc etc etc. I doubt it but in an infinite universe all things are possible.

My best guess, though, is that I think there's going to be an awful lot of Trump voters who will be completely bewildered when the leopards start eating their faces.

I would stop worrying about the election and start worrying about what Trump is going to do with the country.

Scrimt · 15/11/2024 14:52

I'm enjoying hearing of the Trump voters who are only now finding out that the Affordable Care Act, that covers their health insurance, is the same thing as the loathed Obamacare that they hoped would be repealed.

Actually they did get more of the popular vote just not the electoral college

BruFord · 15/11/2024 15:11

One point to bear in mind is that Trump has only nominated these Cabinet members, they also need to approved by the Senate.

Although the Republicans have a majority in the Senate, they only have 53 seats, which aren’t enough to confirm these nominees. Even if every Republican voted for a nominee, they’d still need votes from some Democrats.

I honestly don’t think that moderate Republican senators will vote for the more extreme candidates and Democrats certainly won’t. So they’re not all going to be approved.

Are you thinking of 2016? Trump did lose the poplar vote to Clinton in 2016. This time around he won both the popular vote and the electoral college.

He will not achieve the things he promised like reducing grocery prices. He will spread hatred and disinformation , whilst making very rich people even richer. He will the blame his failures on immigrants, the deep state etc

He said in his acceptance speech that he's going to fix everything wrong with America. We can all safetly assume he's not going to be successful.
