Dawn Butler racism just fine according to Labour

Well, didn’t take long for labour ministers to show their real beliefs did it. According to Dawn Butler, Kemi Badenoch is “a white supremacist in blackface” (with apologies to all for re-typing her massively offensive words). According to the lovely KS this is all just fine, nothing to see here, move along.

One rule for labour, one rule for everybody else. Again. Last time it was failure to declare gifts. This time it is blatant racism. How hideous this government is and what rank hypocrites.

Dawn Butler must have the whip withdrawn otherwise I don’t want to hear one more word from this racist government.

You can evidently say whatever you like. But with a blatantly racist, very popular leader like Boris Johnson at your helm, don't pretend the Tories don't have a problem with race.

Wasn't Jenrick saying that colonised countries should be grateful to the UK in a discussion about the slave trade?

Are you from the past?

You do realise Johnson hasn't been PM or leader of the conservatives for 2 years? and hasn't been an MP for over a year?

And have you realised Jenrick just lost the leadership of the conservative party to Olukemi Olufunto Adegoke Badenoch, a black woman of Nigerian immigrant parents born in the UK and raised in Nigeria and the US?

The woman that a Labour MP has just accused of being a white supremacist in black-face?

Because that's what this thread is about, but for some reason you keep going on about what Boris Johnson said years ago as a diversionary tactic from acknowledging the racist comment just made towards the black female Conservative leader by a current Labour MP.

And FWIW I am neither a Tory nor a Labour supporter, I voted Green in the last GE but i'm more than happy to call out the innappropriate and offensive, racist behaviour of both parties.

Something which you seem keen to defend so long as it's Labour doing it.

Panic buttons exist in the homes of a lot of MPs not just Labour ones so your point doesn’t quite work here. And a bit of irony for you? Nigel Farage has them and strong security due to serious threats etc and his wife is black (and that ain’t the reason he has them!).

Totally right - sorry posted too quickly foreign partner.

I don't know why you are fixated on the previous government that has been voted out. Try and focus on the party that are actually in power.

I know why you are trying to deflect away from Labour by the way. Everyone does if they have been reading the news since July.

If you're going to talk about how progressive the Tories are, then back it up with evidence. You've got 14 years of it so it shouldn't be difficult.

Let's move on though, what progressive policies is Badenoch suggesting? I've carefully followed her leadership campaign and only heard negative things about immigrants, different cultures, disabled children, belittling comments about women, excessive statutory rights and so on.

Farage doesn't have a black wife. This is the thread that keeps on giving.

Okay I said totally right and that I posted too quickly - foreign partner. Sorry, geez people make mistakes.

This thread is about the racist comment which appears to be condoned by the Labour Party and Prime Minister.

I've not been talking about how progressive the Tories are apart from in response to you asking for me to send you lists for some reason. I've simply pointed out that Labour hold themselves out as being progressive but aren't doing quite as well as the Conservatives vis a vis the leadership. It probably filters down through the party too.

quantumbutterfly · 04/11/2024 11:51

TwigletsAndRadishes · 04/11/2024 11:15

She's an absolutely appalling woman. But Labour have a problem. Since KS has been in charge he's already had to remove the whip from/suspend Diane Abbott, Apsana Begum, Rupa Huq and Zarah Sultana. Can anyone see an awkward pattern there?

I mean it's bad enough for Labour that the Tories, this allegedly increasingly 'far right' and 'racist' party according to many, have already had an Indian heritage Prime Minister and former Chancellor, 2 female Indian heritage Home Secretaries, 3 female prime ministers, a female of Nigerian heritage now leading the party and likely to be the next PM, plus a Chancellor of Pakistani heritage and one of Ghanaian heritage, plus James Cleverly and Nadim Zahawi.

Dawn Butler absolutely should be on that list of suspended MPs. It's not her first offence yet she's been let off the hook. Plenty of black and ethnic minority people in Labour (as well as several Guardian journalists and left wing bloggers) have used unforgiveable language about Kemi, as they previously did for Suella and Priti in particular, Kwasi K and others, in relation to their ethnicity apparently being out of line with their politics.

But frankly if KS suspended every ethnic minority MP who indulged in 'black and brown intra-communal language or forms of critique, satire or compliment (e.g. coconut, Uncle Tom, Aunt Kemi, house negro, choc ice etc.)' or said something anti-semitic, he'd risk having no ethnic minority MPs left.

Edited

And this is the kind of intra & inter community division that Kemi said was so destructive to Nigerian society when she lived there.

This country needs to work, it will never be perfect but it feels like we're fighting over deckchairs on the Titanic.

Dawn Butler does not seem as capable at politics as Kemi, it would be interesting to see them chatting but watching a debate between them would titillate the same people who like watching women mud wrestle. We're stronger together and need to find compromise to move forward.

I haven't defended her tweet. I'm challenging the claim that the Tories aren't racist and are a progressive party.

It's very telling how the Tories' racism is suddenly in the past when they're pointing the finger at others.

I know this is not the point but I find Kemi's portrayal of her background seems misleading and designed to craft a particular narrative. In countries like Nigeria and other parts of Asia, having a driver or domestic staff is common among the middle class due to lower labor costs. It’s not an indicator of wealth or high status as it would be in the UK. Claiming such experiences to present an image of privilege and affluence feels disingenuous if she didn’t grow up with similar circumstances in the UK.
It appears that this narrative is aimed at appealing to a specific voter base by projecting an image of success and connection to elite lifestyles. However, this approach falls flat for two main reasons. First, her views are often seen as extreme or divisive, alienating potential supporters. Second, the reality of British society means that a black woman running for leadership might still face significant resistance, regardless of her attempts to align with wealth or status. Overall, her strategy seems unlikely to win over those she’s trying to attract.

Who do you think she is trying to attract by this and why do you think her ethnic origin is relevant to those people.

I read an interesting statement. Most adults on the right can understand the left because they started out there. Most adults on the left can't understand the right because they've never progressed past the politics of their youth.
I'm not being partisan here, just chimed with me.

"never progressed past" could be substituted with "held true to their values and didn't change their politics out of self interest, sometimes even just for one policy". How does that 'chime'?

Babadookinthewardrobe · 04/11/2024 12:01

No, I’m the one highlighting DB’s offensive retweet and KS’s inaction @username7891. That’s what I want to discuss.

I don’t understand why people keep banging on about BJ or demanding 14 years worth of Tory policy as evidence before admitting that what she re-tweeted was vile. Why can’t you just admit what she retweeted was horrible?
