I'm sorry but there were many policy things that happened under the Tory's that were a trigger for sometimes suicide or severe mental health issues- be it desparate situations in financials due to covid restrictions, many business failures and job losses in good industry's due to Brexit, particularly ones with a lot of international mail order,

I didn't see those cases all being hilighted - and in many cases people were left in very dire straights-

Understairscupboard · 02/11/2024 18:20

Her voting record on environmental issues is terrible. She's voted multiple times against improving air and water quality, measures to prevent climate change, improving biodiversity, preservation of environmental protections after leaving EU.

MarriedtoSeamus · 02/11/2024 18:20

My father today said “I’m delighted, I think she says what she thinks and is down to earth”

Bit worried I might have to disown him 😂

She has been in the Govt that saw migration increased 3 fold to 764,000, it obviously doesn't bother her.

I used to vote Conservative, several times, the party has moved far to the right, one of the very few far right parties that doesn't support the EU, thats v extreme.

She is a million miles away from the Tories of the 70s and 80s.

So would you have preferred us to turn away thousands of Ukrainians fleeing war? Or told those from HK they are on their own? Or left those that helped the British die in Afghanistan?

wow.

Oh yes, great post. And austerity brings with it multiple factors for suicidal ideation, which should never be reported in the MSM as a single factor issue.

I think she was doing that to stand out in the leadership context to a certain degree, she will have to win over true conservatives. For a long time now conservatism has been watered down - to the point when one might wonder why they don’t simply sign up to Liberal Democrats.

I think she will bring back a more pure form of conservative values, she really will do something about immigration which will appeal to voters that have spilt the right.

I agree with much of what she says, and don’t see it as hateful at all. The divisiveness is not her fault, as it is running through society already.

I agree that she made a lot of rather nasty remarks to stand out to the party members. That reflects very badly on them and her, of course.
It always worries me when someone says 'conservative values'. Do you mean small state? If so, the cutting of the WFA is absolutely peanuts compared to what she will have to cut to get back to a small state. I don't suppose current pensioners, who tend to vote Tory would be terribly happy with that!

Those tings cost millions - I think she probably choose to keep the hospitals open and functioning rather than pour money down the drain.

She has time to work on softening some of those hard edges, but I for one bloody love the fact that she is fearless and outspoken, takes no prisoners and doesn't suffer fools.

That’s a pretty accurate description of Angela Rayner. Isn’t it amazing how the qualities that are so admired in a politician of one party are denigrated in one from another?

She’s too far to the right for me too. I’ve tended to vote Tory (abstained last time), but would class myself as a centrist. Don’t like or agree with what she said about mental health and disabled children and she clearly has no real life experience of either.

Neither Kemi, Suella or Rishi were immigrants to this country.

Nit picking. Their families were.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/11/2024 18:24

@TwigletsAndRadishes but that's because she is outspoken AND I would expect has similar views to yourself on a range of things . I like Chris Bryant for the same reason - the outspokenness /bolshiness only really works if you also have the same views anyway- the rest of us who don't have the same viewsjust see it as cocky and arrogant and a bit like a particularly obnoxious apprentice candidate. - and you would probably think the same of anyone in labour who was outspoken and direct.

Yes, 100%. We should look a the data on suicide and mental health problems in relation to recent political decision making. Cameron/ Osbourne's austerity politics absolutely made it worse. The data in the US is even worse, absolutely shocking actually.

I am saying I DONT think she said anything hateful at all, plenty of that has been levelled at her though from the lovies that never seem to miss the opportunity to be racist and spiteful despite the pretence of being cool and woke.

rainingsnoring · 02/11/2024 17:57

They all benefitted from their family having immigrated the previous generation (think it was the previous generation) but they also don't want others to benefit or have the same advantages that they had. It's not a very pleasant attitude. @Zonder's post makes this point. Stop crying racism.

Exactly.

I think it's because a lot of people are wedded to political dogma rather than using their brains and examining things more carefully. It is a major problem. The electorate is so easily influenced because of it.

Savingthehedgehogs · 02/11/2024 18:28

Zonder · 02/11/2024 18:26

Do you seriously think we can continue to support and absorb over a million migrants arriving a year?

Well I like her. She's a strong, eloquent woman who has a record of standing up for women.

Hahahaahahha! Her maternity pay views are really supportive of women 🤣🤣🤣

I am glad the conservatives are decent and offered the above homes. There is a world of difference between real need and economic migration by choice.

herecomesautumn · 02/11/2024 18:34

My only experience and knowledge is from watching her being interviewed and not answering any of the questions.

Is she the one that pretends to be middle/working class as the mood takes her?

Wow all you like but the vast majority in the current figures, which are still over 650,000, are not Ukrainians or from HK or from Afghanistan, they are Africans, Asians coming here on student visas, care workers etc etc and their families and dependents.

You really need to speak to French workers who have more rights and are more productive than their equivalent in the UK.

They only have three months maternity leave though!

Oh give over, politicians have always been given nicknames by the press.

This may be true but it is incredibly one- sided. It tends to be Labour politicians given demeaning nicknames not the Conservatives. It's a tactic used by right-wing media to discredit and belittle the Labour politicians they so despise and fear .

Not sure this is right.

Jenrick is 'Generic'.

Rich y Sunac

Can think of loads more.
