I saw the debate and definitely saw signs of cognitive decline or something very wrong. I'm a US voter. He wasn't my first choice for the nomination in 2020 but I think that while I don't agree with all his policies, he has for the most part been a very good president. I was in favour of him stepping aside as I didn't think his health was acceptable for a second term.

However, I have also read a lot of carefully sourced reporting, watched news conferences and listened to interviews and speeches over the last four years. I have listened to him speak in detail on many subjects, including extremely nuanced issues of foreign policy with incredible command of detail and understanding. I've been listening to Joe Biden in some form or other for probably 30 years, he's always been a stumbler and rambler and prone to gaffes.

What I have not done is confine my knowledge of him and his presidency to social media reels.

Thank you for explaining further.

The Soviet Union had a mass of satellite countries it controlled with a fist of iron. That´s why it threw a fit when Ukraine was moving towards the West. It´s what they call their area of influence...
Japan invaded quite a few countries around it, like Korea and Eastern China to have precisely that. And really, the U.S. has it´s backdoor also, and in decades past it put and took out governments in those countries as often as they wanted. It was a more "modern" colonialism. You don´t really need to invade countries nowadays, you control their economies through other ways and reap the benefits.

But I was asking something different. I was challenging the argument that WW2 became global because colonies were dragged in. The US, Soviet Union and Japan were not colonies of other countries. Nor was Germany.

Not necessarily. Look at the explosions in Copenhagen this morning. Noone knows where there could be carried out.
Copenhagen seems a very unlikely place but it happened & thankfully there was no injuries.

As someone in Denmark, why would this be unlikely? Denmark has been extremely supportive of the western coalition in Middle Eastern conflicts, sent troops there, and has a fairly anti-Islam sentiment, with a relatively high number of people living here from two of the affected countries; Lebanon and Palestine. It rejected supporting recognition of a Palestinian state and supplies Israel with weapons.

We’ve had attacks targeted at Jewish sites here before, back in 2015.

Everything is still under investigation. It happened in the middle of the night with no one hurt. Even the DM article has said motives aren’t clear.

I think you’re making this into a bigger deal than it actually is for us; and saying Denmark is neutral is just incorrect.

Thanks for explaining from a Danish perspective. I honestly have no idea about Danish foreign policy or social sentiments, that was a very interesting post. Yes motives are unclear & thank God there was no injuries or loss of life..

Middle Eastern countries/religions/peoples pissed off at one another. Can't remember a time that wasn't so.

More annoying that the US always has to get involved with military retaliations and then inevitably dragging the lapdog UK into it and the whole region remembers why they hate us.

@Whitenoise1 You’re welcome - we’re not exactly the biggest nation! Regardless of what Denmark’s foreign policy is, attacks on Jewish sites are completely unacceptable, whether politically motivated or simply anti-Semitic. If that’s what happened last night, I believe we will locate the attackers and they’ll be punished harshly.

@way @Copenhagener everything crossed they are caught. I'm sure it's extremely unsettling for all Copenhagen residents at the moment, especially Jewish locals, it's completely unacceptable.

Seeing pictures of young children hiding in fear from missiles is just horrendous. How did we end up here. It's very worrying.

Agree with you, it really is horrendous @AwayWithLu

Things must be pretty bad if the Krelim are getting worried & calling for restraint..

The Kremlin says lots of shit, out of both sides of their mouths, to try to sow fear and division.

This sentence is particularly hilarious

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia had contacts with all sides in the region and said Moscow condemned any action that caused the death of civilians.

Credit to them, that's genuinely funny.

I'm wondering if something got lost in the translation 😅

There is nothing we can do about it if it is. We are infinitely fortunate that most of us here live in reasonably safe countries. The best we can do is to take each day as it comes, give of your time and money if you can to charities you support. Love those closest to you. Be mindful. There may be a day when we’re all killed in war, it may be soon, it may not be in our natural lifetime. Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but it wont get you anywhere.

I love this

Please can you tell me what wars were started under Trump as I’m struggling to think of any.

He started a war against Americans; attacking their rights, judicial system, their democratic principles. Pardoned war criminals, put children in cages, undermined NATO, cleared out the US military of Generals that voiced any opinion that offended him.

He emboldened Putin, Edrogan and al-sayed in Syria and cosied up to dictators across the globe.

Niger, Yemen & Somalia saw increased US involvement and his assassination of Iran's General Soleimani came close to sparking a disastrous response.

He's a petulant imbecile who left the world less safe after his presidency and if he gets in there is nobody left to put the brakes on. He can't even be prosecuted for acts of treason and can pardon those who do.

This is a man who publicly asked for a billion dollars from oil companies for his campaign and promised to scrap all regulation that they objected to in return.

He'll sell out anyone for his own enrichment.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/10/2024 22:37

Trump doesn't say anything unless there's something in it for him. It's just vote sweeping

MsAmerica · 04/10/2024 03:24

This is impossible to answer when you frame it this way. Trump is a melodramatic compulsive liar, clocked at over 30,000 lies during his presidency, and recently cited for lying more than twice per minute at a rally.

However, it is certainly true that there are two serious flashpoints at the moment, although that doesn't put us on the "brink."

chumpt · 06/11/2024 22:44

I agree and it's so scary!
