Can't berate Starmer for this but think some parents will be aghast.

It didn’t cost anyone £20,000. A friend who is a party member and donor offered him the use of a flat. No public money spent. No money changed hands. Just a kind offer from a friend. But Starmer has to declare any gifts/benefit in kind and had to put a value on it. That’s where the £20,000 figure comes from.

Um no money changed hands as it was a freebie, that’s the whole point of the issue.

do you really not understand? Do you not understand why politicians can’t accept gifts of value? Any government officials. Senior people in large companies? Most companies do not allow gifts like this, inc in the uk. Due to anti bribery laws.

anti bribery laws cover both monetary gifts and gifts of high value to the recipient. If the recipient accepts it gives a potential for them to owe something back. Something that favours the giver. Something in this case only a prime minister could push for.

Of course he has to bloody declare it. Just because it wasn’t cash in a brown envelope under the table doesn’t change that. He has to be open due to anti bribery laws and the risk of corruption.

mugglewump · 26/09/2024 15:50

I don't know the full details of this story, but imagine doing your GCSEs whilst your father is campaigning to become PM, while the mainstream press are hounding him and therefore you? The Starmers have worked hard to keep their children out of the public eye - no staged family cinema visits for them! - and they have a right to some privacy. Also, I completely detest this tabloid media finger pointing bigotry.

nearlylovemyusername · 26/09/2024 15:50

Starmer's son got it cheaply.

Another Labour MP got "interest free loan" of £1.2m
Lord Alli loaned Labour MP £1.2m to buy a house with her dying sister (msn.com)

All for free, out of goodness of Lord Alli's heart

Josephinesnapoleon · 26/09/2024 15:53

And when we look at anti bribery laws, it isn’t just money as said, it is anything of high value to the recipient, be it attending a prestige sports event,,like starmers season ticket upgrade, or a holiday, travel in a private jet, clothing etc.

becsude if you accept the gift, then you may need to give something back, effectively it is a bribe, to do something , in this instance politically, or use your power to benefit the giver.

it is illegal. Starmer is a lawyer, he knows it is illegal. He knows why you can’t accept high value gifts due to the perception of corruption.

and yet, him, his wife and raynor started accepting before they even won. And carried on taking after.

What are you on about, no one as hounding the kids, they are never pictured, and the flat was loaded for multiple weeks after the GCSE’s, the dates don’t align.

Why on earth would they hound a teenager doing their GSCE study at home? They wouldn't even be camping outside the front door

This is madness. I can't believe the story is being bought

The dates don't even match up

Josephinesnapoleon · 26/09/2024 16:01

And talking of anti bribery. Wiki gives a succinct overview.

In 2024, The Guardian reported that Alli had donated £500,000 to the party since 2020, as well as giving Starmer personal donations worth over £50,000

In August 2024, The Times reported that Alli had been given unrestricted access to 10 Downing Street, uncommon for anyone not formally employed in the Prime Minister's office, and that he had held a reception for party donors in the Downing Street garden.[37]

He was also reported to have gifted Starmer nearly £16,200 of free clothing, which initially was not properly declared, while Starmer’s wife, Victoria, was given £5,000 of free clothing, which at first was not declared.[38] The Daily Telegraph referred to Alli's loan of a "swanky" apartment to the Starmers, with a value of £20,000, as "donor-gate."[39] The Telegraph also reported that Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner faced an investigation by the parliamentary standards commissioner over the use of Alli's $2.5-million New York apartment.[40]

the whiff of corruption is now a stench.

it is illegal. Starmer is a lawyer, he knows it is illegal.

It isn’t illegal. It’s the way political parties are funded in the UK, if you want it made illegal we’ll have to make the political system taxpayer funded.

This what one donor has given the Conservative Party. What do you suppose he’s got in return? All those millions, what would those buy?

Yeah and 50k a year on stationary and postage. With 70k constituents. So she spent on average 700 quid a per person year writing ro each and ever one of them. Which is what, 2 letters a day? Every single day…she sent every single constituent two written letters.

Anyone buying?

He’s declared it as per the rules as should do all MPs. He hasn’t tried to hide it. So he’s done nothing wrong. In view of many other declarations from MPs of all parties it’s a non story unless you highlight everything declared by everyone else. Sorry but these attempts by the right wing media trying to make out Starmer is as bad as the Tories who used our tax payments as their personal bank account are getting ridiculous and boring now
