However, I think that Starmer has been incredibly stupid and/or very badly advised over this expenses issue. He has done nothing wrong, but his behaviour is not what he led us to believe he would do, and I am incredibly exasperated and disappointed.

In my opinion, he should admit that he made a massive misjudgement, and agree to take no more freebies from now on.

Apart from anything else anything which allows people to say "They are all as bad as each other" (they aren't) is a distraction from the real issues the country faces. He should be laser focussed on repairing the damage caused by 14 years of Tory misrule. Not scrambling around dealing with peripheral stuff.
Starmer-say sorry. Don't do it again. And get back to work.

No I won't leave it there. The overarching point is that your parallels re Starmer's son are ridiculous and mean. Why should he suffer because his father is in a political circus? Any outrage you have against your VAT on school fees is tarnished by the fact that because SAID child is the offspring of a father with different coloured politics, their future matters less. It is just unpleasant.

No one is saying he shouldn't do what's best for his child and find him somewhere peaceful to study. Pay for it himself!!!! He's financially more than capable. Certainly more capable than most people in this country! The hypocrisy part is receiving it as a gift.

I can't understand why he thinks he's a labour PM. I wish someone would tell me.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 couldn't agree more. He's a Tory in a red tie.

Yes she did. She said Starmer should put his politics before the son’s GCSEs. The hypocrisy here is quite something.

I regret your vote very much. In fact, if this goes ahead (Reeves has spent years gleefully and openly plotting to attack the poorest), I will never, ever forgive any Labour voter:

I'm a carer for housebound disabled people and they are terrified. So thank you all very much.

That’s just more scaremongering.

Scaremongering! Scaremongering! Just like the removal of the WFA was scaremongering - Reeves said she wanted to do that a decade ago. How many times has she said she wants to crack down on benefits claimants now? No doubt certain people will be clutching at straws to justify it when it happens.

Well this is exactly the point - because private school kids are offspring of parents with different situations/needs/bank balances, their future matters less!

It is just unpleasant indeed.

And where has anyone said that the futures of private school DC matter less? However, your turning of the tables to private school DC suggests that you believe they matter more. The fallout of the as yet hypothetical policy remains to be seen. There is much noise and hyperbole around it, stirred up by a minority. My view is that, if it goes ahead, the vast majority will just pay the VAT.

The trouble is @CurlewKate - some people actually want to see the PM at the football etc to bond with the people. So are we the taxpayer going to foot the bill for a football box?
And if they do not do anything that is popular culture, then you just open up the doors even more to Reform?
Surely the answer is to have a committee to check off that it is OK to eg attend the football and just keep minutes as to why that is.

Why can’t he watch it at home like most people.
This current Labour cabinet absolutely stinks.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/09/2024 16:38

Or pay to go. He has the money.

DreadingWinter · 29/09/2024 16:52

I haven't RTWT but I regret your vote. I'm so cold. I normally would have put the heating on for a couple of hours because the WFA paid two months of my heating bill. So I can't afford to pay for warming myself up today. Already wearing layers of clothes and got a blanket. I'm £1.60 over the Pension Credit limit, so thanks a lot.

You don't acknowledge that the problem with Labour is the hypocrisy. As well as the system which allows it.

I don't recognise it because there isn't any, an argument can be made to change the rules but thats not what is happening here, which is to call Starmer corrupt and a fraud.

VIP Fast lane PPE fraudulent and illegal contracts is not the same as accepting clothing that is then declared... all within the rules and transparent, hence you didn't need a court case to find out about them or hidden in secret papers.

Starmers gifts were all declared months years ago, all known about, why only now are they being publicised??

All smacks of the Rayner housing non story, raised just before the GE.

Tory supporters just cannot accept they lost.

Clothing was not declared as such but put down as office supplies. I see we've all forgotten the global scramble for PPE at the start of the pandemic.

No other country in the world scrapped due diligence for govt contracts.

Hence our govt gave PPE contracts to pest control companies, to a pub! to companies that had no background in protective equipment.

10s of billions poured down the drain, PPE equipment not delivered, out of date, poor quality.

Still defended by Tory die hards.

Xenia · 30/09/2024 10:35

I don't defend the Tory policies on the pandemic nor the Labour ones but have always felt like a lone wolf on this - I have never felt so at odds with most people in the Uk than when the pandemic was on. I did not even agree with lockdowns. Anyway that's all over now but as I said at the time we have saddled a generation with massive state debt taken on to fund furlough payments so the well off could sit at home whilst the poor carried on work delivering things to them at home.

Returning to the matter in hand, Starmer knew better than to accept money for clothes or free clothes and it is a shame he did it. Even if it is within the rules as it was for clothes I think he should either donate the relevant suits to charity and/or pay HMRC 40% tax on the value of the clothing items and ensure Baron Alli has put the sums paid through his or his company's accounts in the correct way.

GoldThumb · 30/09/2024 10:47

Nordione1 · 21/09/2024 09:17

No the other PMs haven't accepted clothes from other men. Or £2,500 of specs. And they haven't lectured people on the morals of doing it either.

Exactly this.

It’s the hypocrisy, and I genuinely think people detest hypocrites, probably more so than the original ’bad behaviour’ in many cases.

I don’t know why people are shocked though tbh

CurlewKate · 30/09/2024 10:51

I am intrigued by @Nordione1's fascination with "accepting clothes from other men". Would accepting clothes from women be OK?

As I have said before, I'm keen to avoid accusations of "whataboutery". But at least Starmer declared the donations.

Of course there is. You can't condemn one of your predecessors for accepting high value gifts and then do the same yourself, regardless as to whether you're acting in the rules.

I don't think you're posting in good faith if you can't see that's an issue. Or there's another reason I'll get deleted for suggesting!

I love the idea that Starmer goes to fotbs
to mix with the supporters! In a box??? With security??? Of course he doesn’t mix. He’s in his privileged prawn sandwich area! He’s on the take and it’s blatantly clear.

He's been a season ticket holder for years. He used to sit in the stands.

Rules matter. But so does rank hypocrisy.
