However, I think that Starmer has been incredibly stupid and/or very badly advised over this expenses issue. He has done nothing wrong, but his behaviour is not what he led us to believe he would do, and I am incredibly exasperated and disappointed.

In my opinion, he should admit that he made a massive misjudgement, and agree to take no more freebies from now on.

Apart from anything else anything which allows people to say "They are all as bad as each other" (they aren't) is a distraction from the real issues the country faces. He should be laser focussed on repairing the damage caused by 14 years of Tory misrule. Not scrambling around dealing with peripheral stuff.
Starmer-say sorry. Don't do it again. And get back to work.

@NoWordForFluffy "Of course there is. You can't condemn one of your predecessors for accepting high value gifts and then do the same yourself, regardless as to whether you're acting in the rules. "

Are you saying the rules don't matter then?

Keir seems to think that large gifts shouldn't be accepted regardless of the rules, as per him condemning Johnson. He should follow what he says, not the rules, if that's his belief.

My thoughts on the rules are irrelevant when Keir himself thinks large gifts are wrong. For others, not him. So he's a hypocrite. And that's the issue.

dottiehens · 30/09/2024 12:22

So if that clown is not delivering they also blame the Tories but calling him a Tory. Nice try!

dottiehens · 30/09/2024 12:25

I now think about the curry and beer lockdown meetings and all the fuss they made to make the Tories evil. This lot is much worse and they were also guilty of breaking lockdown. People were fooled with we are so much better and the high moral standards.
I am heartbroken to read that teachers in private schools are already losing their jobs because of his policies of envy. 😡 In the meantime that odious minister of education gets thousands in donations and free Taylor Swift tickets. How many time they drilled about the bloody wallpaper? It was like a broken radio!

CurlewKate · 30/09/2024 10:51

I am intrigued by @Nordione1's fascination with "accepting clothes from other men". Would accepting clothes from women be OK?

As I have said before, I'm keen to avoid accusations of "whataboutery". But at least Starmer declared the donations.

As I mentioned a few days ago, you've got the wrong poster. Again. No problem though as it's tricky to keep tabs on your own thread

Nordione1 · 30/09/2024 12:48

As I mentioned a few days ago, you have already mentioned this in reponse to someones elses post which I assume was in error. Again as it was directed at me for which you apologised last time. No problem though as it's tricky to keep tabs on your own thread. I think things may have moved on or will have moved on soon anyway.

Oh actually it was me. So long ago I've forgotten. You've misquoted me twice so I assumed it was a hat trick! Apologies.

No obsession. The word "other men" being used as it's not clothes from his mum.

I don't think you're posting in good faith if you can't see that's an issue. Or there's another reason I'll get deleted for suggesting!

When did Starmer call out Sunak or Cameron for accepting free gifts from friends, when there was no conflict of interest?

Using tax payer money in an inappropriate way yes, such as both Johnson and sunak have done.

The Conservatives have been critical of the number of gifts received by senior Labour figures and called for a full investigation into Starmer’s potential breaches of the rules
But Conservative MPs have also significantly benefited in gifts from wealthy benefactors – 141 Tory MPs received £359,891 in free gifts, including tickets paid for by the water industry and thousands of pounds of clay-pigeon shoots and helicopter rides from wealthy donors, according to Observer analysis. In the same period (Sept 2023 to August '24) 118 Labour MPs netted £298,151 worth of gifts

So free gifts from the water industry, when you re the govt in charge of water regulation has a strong conflict of interest element or 'shooting when the Govt is looking to ban lead in cartridges and the industry is against it.

This is where Starmer should no longer take any football related gifts, as the govt is looking into stronger regulation.

Having a difference of opinion, isn't "not posting in good faith" but perhaps i should say that about you because you don't agree with me???

I love the idea that Starmer goes to fotbs
to mix with the supporters! In a box??? With security??? Of course he doesn’t mix. He’s in his privileged prawn sandwich area! He’s on the take and it’s blatantly clear.

Why is it so difficult for you to comprehend that he has gone to watch the football matches for years and is not allowed to be in the stands now for security reasons? However the truth doesn't quite fit your prawn sandwich rhetoric, does it?

Nonsense. By that warped logic you are not being clear that the clothes weren't from his father.

The TV presenter on GB news said "he should have gone to Specsavers like everyone else".

Specsavers will be missing a trick if they don’t feature him on their next ad 😁

Scaremongering! Scaremongering! Just like the removal of the WFA was scaremongering - Reeves said she wanted to do that a decade ago. How many times has she said she wants to crack down on benefits claimants now? No doubt certain people will be clutching at straws to justify it when it happens.

This is not new for Labour.

Last time they were in power there used to be adverts on the buses/trains like ‘do you suspect your neighbour of benefit fraud? Call 0800 blah blah’

TizerorFizz · 30/09/2024 14:18

Starmer might have paid his own way at Arsenal previously but claiming it’s to talk to supporters is ridiculous. Looking at his declaration of gifts, he’s had loads of freebies for football over several years. This is not new.

So that's where the Tories got the idea for their Brexit bus emblazoned with total lies then? I think the fallout from the the Tory one was significantly larger.

No other country in the world scrapped due diligence for govt contracts.

Hence our govt gave PPE contracts to pest control companies, to a pub! to companies that had no background in protective equipment.

10s of billions poured down the drain, PPE equipment not delivered, out of date, poor quality.

Still defended by Tory die hards.

It is ridiculous to allege that no other country scrapped due diligence. Everyone was desperate and took anything they could get. This is just one EU-wide example. https://euobserver.com/health-and-society/ar4ab00712

Companies were remodelling keft, right and centre to provide PPE and hygiene products such as sanitiser and were lauded for it at the time. But now we've forgotten our own desperation, the thousands of panicked mumsnetters posting on here, the hundreds of thousands of terrified social media users, political parties of all countries demanding longer, harder lockdowns and PPE NOW from anywhere, nurses are using binbags. It's all over and people are still alive and feel a bit silly so want to gloss it all over. Does not trying to completely rewrite history make me a Tory die hard now?

Billions of euros, millions of faulty masks, and no answers

In the EU, only Portugal, Poland, Lithuania and Slovenia published all contracts signed by public authorities. Most countries held back information on prices paid, arguing it was necessary to preserve secrecy in order not undermine negotiations.

Starmer is a genuine Arsenal supporter. It's real and not contrived. The box issue was explained to you but your choose to ignore the truth. Do you take issue with Prince William getting free entry to everything from football to Taylor Swift for him and his family?

Alltheprettyseahorses · 30/09/2024 14:36

Maybe Starmer just thinks he's above sitting in the stands now? There are no safety concerns because previous PMs and current heirs the throne have done it so it's probably as simple as that.

TizerorFizz · 30/09/2024 14:36

The RF is NOT the same as a politician. Categorically not. Plus Starmer has accepted freebies from football for years. Take a look. His season tickets gets him way more than mine does! Hospitality all over the place! It’s the thin end of the wedge really. He’s on the take.

You didn't answer. Should the Royal Family be getting freebies then? Why don't you comment on Boris's freebies? Or are his politics a better colour?

Do you really believe that the heir to the throne is not surrounded by shedloads of security? If you are talking about Sunak, his visits were one-offs for PR stunts. Hardly like he was a sitting duck in the same place in the stands each home game.

Thats behind a paywall.

the point he is no other country did have a VIP lane that by passed normal checks etc.
Thats what the covid inquiry has accepted as evidence and the courts found as illegal.

My DD worked as a carer during LD, whilst at Uni, no PPE, no nothing, just people dying who shouldn't have, one after the other, told to stay at home.

All ok because Starmer had a football ticket.

As @TizerorFizz has said, KS taking freebies for years, all declared but funny how the media has waited until now to publish, all known about.

The VIP lane was found to have breached a European regulation on equal treatment. The breach was found to have made no difference to the contracts at issue in that case. The breach was so minor that the court refused to make a declaration of unlawfulness. The Good Law Project, which brought the case, lost on every single other issue and had to pay the costs.

I looked this up and saw they got a telling off from the judge for going for contracts like this
