However, I think that Starmer has been incredibly stupid and/or very badly advised over this expenses issue. He has done nothing wrong, but his behaviour is not what he led us to believe he would do, and I am incredibly exasperated and disappointed.

In my opinion, he should admit that he made a massive misjudgement, and agree to take no more freebies from now on.

Apart from anything else anything which allows people to say "They are all as bad as each other" (they aren't) is a distraction from the real issues the country faces. He should be laser focussed on repairing the damage caused by 14 years of Tory misrule. Not scrambling around dealing with peripheral stuff.
Starmer-say sorry. Don't do it again. And get back to work.

I read something today that made me smile:
LABOUR PARTY: We vote them in every 12 years to remind us why we shouldn't vote for them.

And sure they need to draw some parameters as to what is and what is not acceptable. But let’s face it - if they are going to investigate the sale of Oasis ticket racket then going to Taylor Swift with your teen is kind of understanding the public. So I think they just need to justify more.

I want them to investigate the pricing on birkin bags, as a fan it seems insane to me that I can’t get one for a fiver. This is definitely the purview of government, most definitely, very pressing.

Well, whippy shit for you.

Hahahaha!

hellsbells99 · 20/09/2024 22:59

I cannot understand why he would let someone else pay for his glasses! Just go to specsavers like a normal member of society

StarSlinger · 20/09/2024 23:13

I can't understand why he thinks he's a labour PM. I wish someone would tell me.

Starmer’s dad owned the tool making company. That is the definition of middle class.

Oh stop! His dad worked as a tool maker for most of his life and then set up as a sole trader. Hardly 'owned the company'

BlushingBrightly · 20/09/2024 23:18

twistyizzy · 20/09/2024 21:23

He came in on a soundbite of "change" yet, as predicted, they are no better than anyone else. However they claimed moral superiority so should be able to live up to that. Which was obvious to some ie the whole faux WC/tool maker facade when in fact he is an Oxford graduate, millionaire, living in a £2 million + house and wouldn't know how the WC live in a million years.
The worrying thing is that so many people fell for it. None of the historical tweets from any in the cabinet have aged well.

He's not an Oxford graduate, he went to Leeds. For all he may have been 'banging on' about his background you still didn't get it all right. Could you possibly be wrong about anything else? 🤔

Houseplanter · 20/09/2024 23:19

I cannot put in to words how much I regret your vote

Parsley1234 · 20/09/2024 23:19

You mean someone gave her this 🤦‍♀️

I am a Labour voter, a Labour supporter and I do not regret my vote.
redwinechocolateandsnacks · 20/09/2024 23:31

I am not actually a Labour voter (OP) I just want to create dissatisfaction with the government.

Moonshiners · 20/09/2024 23:33

It's fucking annoying. Obviously the Tories were doing this as well but we expect that from them. They were doing a lot worse but they don't pretend to be anything other than morally corrupt.
Its the hypocrisy that makes it jarring.

Candyfluffs · 20/09/2024 23:44

Labour didn’t win the election, the conservatives threw it away and now we are left with a bunch of clowns running the country who think it’s acceptable to leave some pensioners in the cold this winter….and lock up protesters for months and months while letting even more dangerous criminals out early…..then destabilising the economy with this ridiculous budget announcement, not to mention all the expenses crap and having someone buy your clothes.

It’s outrageous and making our country into even more of a laughing stock. Hope all the Labour voters have a word with themselves after this.

Rummly · 20/09/2024 23:46

I care less about the Supermarket Sweep trolley dashes that the Labour hierarchy has been enjoying and more about the pack of lies they’re telling about the economy and about their energy ‘policies’.

‘I don’t regret my vote’

You will, Oscar, you will.

No,he didn't.

He did, i’m not saying they were fabulously wealthy but his dad penned an article about how kier had to work in his factory.

Starmer’s Father Admitted He Was the Owner of Toolmaking Factory

Starmer has made a huge amount of his Dad working as a "toolmaker". On Wednesday's highly-watched Sky News Leaders Event he said: "I accept I earn a lot

KS is a multi-millionaire, there is no reason he and his wife should not be buying their own work clothes and glasses. Complete hypocrites. I can't understand how this doesn't make even labour supporters cringe.
Also, a lot of these tickets are for 4 or more people. What type of jobs gives you perks like these for your family and mates. Totally taking advantage. The issue is these donors will be wanting favours back at some point. And btw if he wanted to he could also easily afford to buy box tickets. It's a matter of choice.

CurlewKate · 21/09/2024 07:09

@ANON20241 ". I can't understand how this doesn't make even labour supporters cringe. "

That's rather the point of the thread. Many Labour supporters are pissed off about it. That doesn't mean we no longer support Labour and or don't think they are ultimately the way forward for the country.

@twistyizzy "Which was obvious to some ie the whole faux WC/tool maker facade when in fact he is an Oxford graduate, millionaire, living in a £2 million + house and wouldn't know how the WC live in a million years. "
Are you saying that he doesn't come from a working class background?

Actually yes I am. His dad owned the factory. He was in a music conservatorire. He went to grammar school. None of those things scream working class.

DarkandStormyNightie · 21/09/2024 07:20

Honestly, a government that shows this little emotional intelligence this early on does not bode well.

I fear that they won't actually fix anything in this country because they'll make deeply unpopular decisions and be voted out at the next election.

Four years is a short time to really implement and embed change. They won't be able to achieve anything meaningful without the support of the electorate over at least 2 or 3 terms, rendering these short term painful budgets meaningless and deeply unpopular.

I honestly thought they had more political sense and a better plan to win over the country and start off on a positive footing when they got into power.

Doom, gloom and corruption is very difficult to come back from.

Freysimo · 21/09/2024 07:25

I think Starmer's idea was to get the "bad stuff" over first so that in five years come election we'll have forgotten. I wonder if Reeves is busy rewriting budget after recent bad publicity or will stick to her guns?

CurlewKate · 21/09/2024 07:26

For clarity-Starmer's father was a sole trader. There is (apparently-I haven't personally checked) no trace of any company in his name at companies house. He had a workshop rather than a factory.

And he went to Oxford as a postgraduate. His first degree was from Leeds.

TBF, attending a grammar school is no more middle class than attending a comprehensive school.

CurlewKate · 21/09/2024 07:28

@twistyizzy ". His dad owned the factory. He was in a music conservatorire. He went to grammar school. None of those things scream working class."

His dad owned the workshop. As a sole trader. And saying that working class people can't be musical is a little shocking, to be honest.

OP posts:
DarkandStormyNightie · 21/09/2024 07:28

It doesn't actually matter what his background was or where he went to school. What matters right now is the fact they are cocking it up and are on track to be another deeply unpopular government.
