No questions the Tories were bad, but Labour are on another level.

Are you still happy you voted them in? Be honest now, you are having your doubts aren’t you?

If not, you really should be.

I didn't vote for them so will have a clear conscience. They won't be able to fix any of the issues that are a concern to the majority of people, if anything things will get a lot worse. It's a shame it was an election where only the tories or Labour could win - we need some good opposition

Yep I tend to avoid these threads with more of the same.

Are you still going with this? I haven't seen much beyond these types of posts. It's beyond.

You are useful for reminding me not to engage on pro Labour threads. Good to look for a positive.

Enjoy

What do you mean by a "Good Opposition" ?

Our FPTP system means that once a party has a majority, they are free to do as they wish and the Govt doesn't need to take on board anything they say.
The Tories will be no worse at opposing Labour policies than Labour were when they were in opposition, regardless of the size of the majority.

"If things get a lot worse..." How exactly? under the last lot, we had brexit which however you voted froze government action on anything for years as they grappled with trying to patch up relations with the EU.
Lack of pandemic response, mostly due to austerity and cost cutting.
Truss, she has added 10s of billions to uk borrowing costs, not too mention wrecking DC pensions.
Highest taxes since WW2.
Highest borrowing since WW2, yet with nothing to show for it.
The shocking state of UK roads, NHS waiting lists, sickness, unfunded tax cuts, the removal of almost all NHS dentistry.
Trebled migration.

I'm not a fan of Starmer but boy, he would have to go some to make matters worse.

Zonder · 18/09/2024 08:14

Fair point @iwishihadknownmore - hard to imagine how things could get worse than under the last lot.

I'm really not a Starmer fan but I do recognise he has a lot of qualities and I'd rather him than any of the last 5 Tory PMs. I do believe we are safer as a country now.

Zonder · 18/09/2024 08:36

Well would you believe it? More or Less on radio 4 in half an hour is talking about the suggestion 9500 will leave the country because of Labour tax changes that haven't happened yet and looking at how anyone could come up with that figure. I'll have to listen on Sounds later.

No one can really tell if 9500 wealthy people will leave the country until it happens and even then how do you prove this was solely down to Labour's taxation policies and not the weather.

But wealthy higher rate taxpayers leaving the country is not good for the economy and shouldn't be dismissed or celebrated.

Yes its fine not supporting Labour of course it is but i do wish people could be a little more objective and at least point out all the good things the Tories have done over the last 14 years.

When you look at the state we are in, its actually quite frightening.

Just a snap shot of UK waste/problems today - a council forced to pay a private non regulated company £16000, yes Sixteen thousand, per WEEK to look after ONE child, such is the drive for privatisation and of course, Austerity, a Penny wise, Pound Foolish policy of grand proportions.

This particular council is paying out so much in private care fees, it may well go bankrupt and apparently, these sorts of fees are common throughout England at least.

You ve moved the goalposts on this.

The original report was that 9500 millionaires may leave the UK, who knows what tax rates they pay, if any, is this figure a net loss?

We'd still be left with almost 3m millionaires.

Zonder · 18/09/2024 08:48

There's a long way to go @iwishihadknownmore

@1dayatatime I agree - who can tell why anyone would be migrating, if they even are. As I pointed out before, this was a prediction from a private business who make their money from encouraging migration out of Britain, so not impartial, and with reason to make it all sound normal.
It will be interesting to find out on the programme how they did get those figures.

@Efacsen you can count on me 😊

Hi all,
This thread seemed to become rather personal last night, and we would respectfully suggest that this should not continue today. Please try to stick to the topic at hand, there should be plenty to go on...

TheUnsilenced · 18/09/2024 09:08

Well that’s us told.

Respectfully Hope, the MN mods should stamp out the collective bullying amongst three posters on this thread. You are driving away other posters by failing to act.

Araminta1003 · 18/09/2024 09:15

Are you on the incognito tab @TheUnsilenced ?

PandoraSox · 18/09/2024 09:16

Hi @HopeMumsnet could I ask you something, please? If a poster on a thread is found to be a troll and banned is it OK to mention that poster by name on the thread concerned and explain that they were a troll etc.? I am not sure of the rules on this, if any?

Araminta1003 · 18/09/2024 09:16

I am assuming that like our politicians MN cannot keep up with everything. It is too difficult to follow every thread.

Araminta1003 · 18/09/2024 09:18

I also want to make sure that there is control of IP addresses somehow? So those who stick to their IP addresses surely that is OK? And yes, they should not be offensive etc and follow the guidelines. But we need a consistency of IP addresses surely somehow?

If you see bullying, report it. As Araminta says, the mods can't police every thread.

PandoraSox · 18/09/2024 09:21

What is the incognito tab, @Araminta1003 ? I have not heard of it.

1dayatatime · 18/09/2024 09:26

@iwishihadknownmore

"You ve moved the goalposts on this."

What goal posts??

"The original report was that 9500 millionaires may leave the UK, who knows what tax rates they pay, if any, is this figure a net loss?

We'd still be left with almost 3m millionaires."

Let me make it clear wealthy higher rate taxpayers leaving the country is not good for the economy and shouldn't be dismissed or celebrated and it will result in an economic net loss.

To say we are still left with 3 m millionaires is like saying I can set fire to £9.5 k because I have 3 million in the bank.
