No questions the Tories were bad, but Labour are on another level.

Are you still happy you voted them in? Be honest now, you are having your doubts aren’t you?

If not, you really should be.

Hi @HopeMumsnet could I ask you something, please? If a poster on a thread is found to be a troll and banned is it OK to mention that poster by name on the thread concerned and explain that they were a troll etc.? I am not sure of the rules on this, if any?

How do you even prove or show that "someone is a known troll" (other than of course finding them under a bridge).

Surely it will always be an unfounded accusation?

I think MNHQ has various ways of identifying trolls, but obviously they won't want to explain how they do this.

"I think MNHQ has various ways of identifying trolls, but obviously they won't want to explain how they do this."

Sounds like bollocks to me. Generally the accusation of troll or paid bot gets thrown around with no evidence just because someone has a different view.

MNHQ don't ban posters because they have a "different view".

TheUnsilenced · 18/09/2024 09:49

I don’t know what that is, sorry.

MNHQ refer to known trolls as PBP= previously banned posters in deletion messages - don't know what they call newly banned posters

I think I have seen them use the word troll when deleting threads started by a troll.

Okay - not seen that myself but that means notthing

They certainly acknowledge the existence of trolls on the site and agree they use that label to describe them

"You ve moved the goalposts on this."

What goal posts??

"The original report was that 9500 millionaires may leave the UK, who knows what tax rates they pay, if any, is this figure a net loss?

We'd still be left with almost 3m millionaires."

Let me make it clear wealthy higher rate taxpayers leaving the country is not good for the economy and shouldn't be dismissed or celebrated and it will result in an economic net loss.

To say we are still left with 3 m millionaires is like saying I can set fire to £9.5 k because I have 3 million in the bank.

It's not. It's like saying I may possibly lose 9.5k or something other figure because that's a guestimate, through some as yet unfounded assumptions but I still have 3 million.

And within those 3 million, how is the wealth held?

Mostly housing and mostly in London / SE.

If thats true, then they wont necessarily be higher rate tax payers, likely as not, retired even.
In fact if they sold up and moved, then that would raise a lot of stamp duty.

So whats the fuss?

I suspect though, to be classed a millionaire, its not based purely on the value of your house.

I imagine most of it is property value, hence all the frothing about millionaire pensioners.

OK.

My point is this - that wealth is illiquid, and largely untaxed (until death etc), so whilst you might seek to rely on those numbers versus the projected flight of millionaires, they are two very very different propositions in terms of short-term tax receipts.

Many UHNW are investors and employers.

Correct a lot will definitely not be higher rate income tax payers.

It depends how you define millionaires - on assets / wealth or on income. And there are a lot more asset millionaires than income millionaires.

You could for example live in a £1.2 million mortgage free house in London and still be on a state pension. Equally you could be earning £1m per year and live in expensive rented property in London and have say £25k of assets.

Araminta1003 · 18/09/2024 13:33

The issue is that the long term trajectory of the UK economy and pound is downhill since Brexit. Couple that with a relatively unstable political position, high taxation, poor health/education for employees other places may just look like they may have more long term business upside? The powers to be have to be really careful about creating the right business environment.
Nobody is going to leave because they are scared of the “Budget”. But if the budget is anti business then that will be the final nail on the coffin.

Correct- from a capital flight perspective it is highly unlikely that the little old lady on a state pension living in a £1.2 million news house is going to sell up and move to Monaco.

Whereas it is much easier for the £1m per year city banker to relocate to the Zurich or Geneva office of their employer.

I’m sorry but your penultimate sentence is incorrect.

I don’t want to start a problem, and I am not misrepresenting the facts. I’m in the wealth sector and some high level money has gone, is leaving.

Not only because of the expected budget, admittedly.
