No questions the Tories were bad, but Labour are on another level.

Are you still happy you voted them in? Be honest now, you are having your doubts aren’t you?

If not, you really should be.

This really has become a daily question on here hasn’t it?

Specifically what have the Labour Party done which in your opinion is so bad?

I don’t agree with them means testing the WFA in the way they have. But I wouldn’t expect to be in favour of every policy.

However, the rest of what they are doing is a refreshing change.

Who would you rather have in government?

Fargo79 · 12/09/2024 09:03

This reads as though written by a 13 year old. If you want to have an adult, intelligent discussion then you need to make some actual points. This is silly tribalism.

A daily question for a daily tax reform proposal.

What?

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 12/09/2024 09:07

Ginisatonic · 12/09/2024 09:05

What?

Almost daily, there is some new tax reform discussed.

WFA, council tax single occupancy, no free bus passes for old folk.

You many not give a shit, but it impacts many.

Where are all the day one promises..
Or did Labour promise more than they could deliver.

It’s not Labour that are discussing this though is it? It’s just media and social media speculation.
You need to wait until the budget on the 30th of October to see what is actually going to happen.

Ignignokte · 12/09/2024 09:15

I didn't vote labour but I hoped for the best nonetheless, as I hope we all do. Give them a chance, thought I. And maybe things will improve. But I'm not getting that vibe so far. Feels like going from a steady downward slope to crashing down a mountain. But that's just based on interviews and plans; maybe I'm wrong about how things work & the overall situation in the UK will get better. I just haven't heard anything that convinces me that will be the case yet.

Fingers crossed.

Moier · 12/09/2024 09:17

I didn't vote for them.
Never liked labour.
After Corbyn .. Stammer is one of the worst.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/09/2024 09:19

I’m disappointed but not entirely surprised that the first people they targeted were the pensioners. Early release of violent prisoners I was not expecting. Comparing this to the early days of the Blair government there’s not much positivity. It’s like it’s not the same party. I didn’t vote for them this election but previously was a lifelong Labour voter. I couldn’t vote for them as they are now.

Lalalacrosse · 12/09/2024 09:23

Apparently Estonia is renting out jail space, so we could have done that in preference to just shrugging and letting them out.

Not impressed with that decision.

Improbablywrong · 12/09/2024 09:29

I grew up in a conservative household, and vote labour myself as an adult.

My daughter came home and said mummy lots of bad people escaped prison today, my friend told me.

^ this is not exactly the first impression i wanted my daughter to have, of the party we have waited so long to have in power and whom I’m proud to vote for. I am not against the decision, but it could have been handled so much better. Waited a while. Put measures in place first. The pensioners bus passes is outrageous if true.

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 12/09/2024 09:31

They are heaping bad policy decision on top of each other.

Just wait until the first old folk start perishing this winter. Truly appalling.

Which other policies that they've implemented don't you agree with?

Apart from the winter fuel allowance have you just made the rest up? Because I haven't heard the Government proposing those things? 🤔

I actually voted Lib Dem, because I feared this Labour Government were going to be a different flavour of Tory.

Unpopular opinion on here but I firmly believe we need to invest heavily across all our public sector and transport. It would make so many people's lives feel better, but also help the economy. In order to do that though we need to either raise taxes or borrow. That's where I think Labour are not being honest, I don't believe we can do what needs doing by vague hopes of growing the economy first.

Haroldwilson · 12/09/2024 09:39

No, I think they're brilliant.

The Tories have made promises they can't keep for years and years while papering over the fire state of the basics. They wasted huge amounts of time and effort on brexit. (Even if you support brexit, it was an inefficient process - they could have had at least a plan).

Labour are doing unpopular things but if it means they grapple with the decaying mess rather than just sticking cherries on top, it's fine by me.

There are always hard stories but many pensioners have more disposable wealth than young people. The 'worked hard all our lives' thing doesn't really work when young people are working just as hard if not harder, without getting the same things in return. And to be honest, older generations could have seen these problems coming and addressed them but just decided to lump debt on their children, delayed retirement age etc.

It's like having a builder round who says you need to fix the fundamentals before doing the work you want a quote for, instead of just taking your money.

Nobody likes taking money off anyone, but after austerity most services are down to bare bones.

Haroldwilson · 12/09/2024 09:41

And actually I feel much lightened the whole time by government not being a competition to see who can dump on immigrants the hardest. Fucking delighted we don't have to talk about the Rwanda plan any more, or whether we should scrap human rights law.

yorktown · 12/09/2024 09:47

Very happy so far.
They have a lot more to do though.

poppyzbrite4 · 12/09/2024 09:50

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 12/09/2024 09:35

Let me ask you.

Which ones are you happy with?

They haven't done much.

I was happy with how the rioters were dealt with; quickly and efficiently.

I'm glad the Rwanda white elephant has been scrapped.

I think the WHA was a waste of money. I believe 8m didn't actually need the money though it's unfortunate that some will suffer. I'm hoping something will be done to help them, even though the pension is going up next year.

How about you?

Mercurial123 · 12/09/2024 09:51

Seriously OP were you living under a rock for the last 14 years? The previous government destroyed the country, they were corrupt, racist and had zero empathy for working class people. It's going to take years to undo what they did.

I don't understand why investing in the public sector is unpopular. We need to invest in everything, across the board. The country is on its knees after years of neglect.

RedHotChilliPreppers · 12/09/2024 09:54

I think KS is being bold, and it will be interesting to see if it all plays out. We are all in agreement I’m sure that things are up the shitter on all fronts and we are at a turning point where it’s either go full on Tonto and fix things, or become a 2nd or 3rd rate country, a once great empire now collapsed.

What I do have a problem with it who’s paying for it? So far it’s my elderly 90 year old dad whose fuel subsidy has been retracted, and it’s my kids who may have to pull out of their school next year. Then there’s the upcoming budget. Our pensions and whatever else we’ve got will get raided.

It’s not the work shy that’ll get hammered, it’s those with aspiration, who work hard (yes, those working hard in all professions will pay more, all the JAMS) and who don’t piss money up the wall. The hard working, the responsible, the savers and those who save for the future.

It won’t be those cutting their hours so as not to affect their UC (I work with loads of these), or those who blow money up the wall (know about this too as worked for debt charity where almost all my clients were in debt as a result of buying frivolous shite).

I’m happy with some of the things he’s doing, but not happy about how he’s financing it all. He has bold ideas but he’s also a massive hypocrite, a champagne socialist, has 2 tiers that he applies depending on who you are, and he has thrown women under a bus to appease a minority. He thinks we are all thick, and he knows better. He’s cosying up to Europe when it was actually his own supporters who mainly voted us out of there. He’s doing what he likes and thinks is best for us, but not necessarily what his voters want.

We’ll see. Bottom line is I’m not prepared to pay for his ideology and will do what I can to make sure I’m not paying for it out of principle.

Spiderwmn · 12/09/2024 09:54

They’ve been in power for two minutes - I honestly think the public think there really is a magic money tree- you can’t make improvements without paying for it- you pay for it by taxes or borrowing -we have already borrowed so much we as a country can barely cover our interest payments so that leaves taxes. Hopefully the increase in taxes will be across the board -we will see.
