And I confess myself very surprised.

Kamala Harris' fundraising reaches a record-breaking $100 million since Biden's exit

Whatever he thinks will attract the most votes.

Honestly, Trump plays the crowd at rallies, showman like. He has tried a few lines that crowds didn't like & then dropped them not to be much repeated. He told his followers to get vaccinated against covid. They boo'd at rally when he said that .... Trump has not repeatd that line at rallies but he will say he got vaccinated & encourage others to get the covid jabs in TV interviews. So he plays down what his base doesn't want to hear. That includes his crazy ideas & rampant hypocrisy.

As for funding rush for Harris, I'm surprised & also very delighted. I've always liked her so far.

My born again (now max age 25) cousins (in Georgia) truly believed that Obama & left-wing liberals were evil, were raised to think that way. I guess that's how evangelical Christians reconcile themselves to Trump's rampant corruption, lack of integrety or respect for democracy & trailing kleptocracy. They genuinely believe the alternative is apocalyptic.

Absolutely scandalous

I'd pay if I was in the US and thought it would help de-Trump the country.

Well, @Zonder, on behalf of the entire country of the United States of America, I thank you!

I think Vance came with a dowry, essentially, and Trump is all about the money.

Absolutely, @Overtheatlantic. And I love the choice of word "dowry."

Yes very good word choice !

Plumpribbon · 02/08/2024 06:24

Is it a good choice of word? Or is it in fact thinly veiled racism

How is the word dowry racist? The concept is deeply rooted In patriarchy and misogyny but I don’t think it has racial connotations.

You get that the context was the dowry (money/votes) that Vance brought to Trump, right?

In the context of two white men, no. Vance's wife is nothing to do with it.

If she was a billionaire like Sunak's wife then those implications might have been hovering in the background, but that's not what's going on here.

Edingril · 02/08/2024 08:17

I wonder how much that could help the poor over there?

You are wrong and ignorant on this issue

RobinStrike · 02/08/2024 08:37

@Plumpribbon what is racist about it? Women in this country had dowries for centuries. Pieces of land, a farm, or wealth. Even the traditional marriage "bottom drawer" is a type of dowry.
Vance comes with money so the 'union' between him and Trump makes the work dowry apt. He gets the post and Trump gets the money.

If you don’t believe that the word used against Vance was racist, then you really need to educate yourself.

Terms can be racist in some contexts but not in others. We're posting in a feminist-literate site where dowries are seen as part of a millennia-old global pattern of female oppression, and very much part of British tradition. We're not classing it as "something foreigners do over there"

In this context it very much is if it is used against Vance

Please can you explain this? How is it racist in this context? Clearly several of us are struggling with this. I'm coming fresh from reading a book set in England a couple of centuries ago where dowries come up so my recent glimpse of dowry is not racist.

Plumpribbon · 02/08/2024 09:05

To the posters pretending not to understand why the use of ‘dowry’ used specifically against Vance isn’t racist, you need to educate yourself about that word, how it’s used and it’s connotations

Zonder · 02/08/2024 09:07

@Plumpribbon you know this is a UK site predominantly, and lots of us know the word dowry from an old English context? You know it's not just something that happens over there with foreigners? It would be quite racist were anyone to think that.

Igotjelly · 02/08/2024 09:07

I’m generally quick to call out racism where I see it but to be honest ‘educate yourself’ is not the way to do that. If someone is being racist unintentionally then surely the best thing is to explain why the thing they’re doing is racist rather than to berate them.

I assume you are referring to the fact that Vance’s wife is of Indian descent? My assumption was that the reference to a dowry was in relation to donors and money that he as a person brings, nothing to do with her.

Zonder · 02/08/2024 09:08

Exactly @Igotjelly I take it to refer to the relationship between Trump and Vance, nothing to do with who either of them are actually married to.
