Are there any 'Portillo moments' to look forward to?

Listening to 'The Rest is Politics', they predicted that Jacob Rees-Mogg was a possible Portillo moment in July. God I'd love that. Those of you who crunch numbers, are there any others?

I obviously hope I’m wrong but I’ve yet to see how Labour can genuinely fix the problems.

If you want to see the conservatives take a bashing that’s fair enough, but we do need an opposition in politics. The Lib Dem’s won’t really be much of an opposition, as they’re more similar politically.

Smash the gangs…
Recruit more teachers..
Being down the waiting lists..
Lower energy bills with green energy..

Has anyone seen Jacob Rees Mogg lately? He's been very quiet, hasn't he? I would stay up all night to see his face if he was voted out.

I hope they get rid of Penny Mordaunt - if they don't then I think she'll be the next leader. If they do get rid of her then god knows who'll have the job.

Michael Gove - isn't he standing down anyway?

I'd like all the old Cameron men to lose their posts.

Most of all, I want Farage not to get a seat. It'll disrupt any debates for years.

I think most of Cameron’s men have stood down.

I don’t think Farage will win his seat in Clacton but think Reform may get a couple of seats.

Paul2023 · 27/06/2024 21:04

I’d also like Farage to win though just to piss David ‘Lord ‘ Cameron off..

Atleast Farage got rid of Cameron. Cameron and Osborne, the architects of austerity.
I think Osbourne would have been the next Tory leader had it not been for Brexit.

Looking at the election calculus website there could potentially be quite a few:

Rees-Mogg
Grant Shapps
Gillian Keegan
Penny Mordaunt
Claire Coutinho
Tobias Elwood
Mark Harper

OMG Mark Harper is my constituency MP and I can't wait to see him gone. He doesn't even live locally.

I am sure that it's not a done deal, but I don't think the transgender issue is the big issue that Tory voters would like it to be.

GP appointments, Making the country energy independent with proper green energy not burning trees! waiting lists, cancer treatment times, dentists, RAAC concrete in schools, shit in rivers, children’s homes, ACTUALLY building those 40 new hospitals that are needed, a workforce plan for the NHS, social work and teaching. A stable economy, inflation and the cost of living, competent bloody governing FOR the people.

Portillo did quite well out of his 'moment' probably more so than if he had won the seat

Not sure about that! In 1997 Portillo was a cabinet minister in his mid-40s. He could have ended up leader of the opposition and ultimately maybe PM had he stayed in Parliament.

But he wouldn't have got to do all those train journeys in those rather odd blazers and trousers. I loathe the tories but have to admit he was gracious in defeat to Stephen Twigg. I sooo hope we see Reece Mogg go, worth staying up for on election night.

It is worth remembering David Mellor's undignified rant in contrast to Portillo's grace. As a young man, I watched Portillo lose from pure schadenfreude, but was moved by his frankness.

I'm not sure I could cope with 20 odd notable ex Tory mps doing shows about various transport methods on the bbc.

My 3 are

Rees Mogg
Braverman
Jenrick

Suella's Guide to Tofu and Marxism.

Back to School with Michael Gove

instead of Top Gear, what about Top Hat? Jacob Rees Mogg presents the series about hats, hats and more hats. Ascot Special.

@CrushingOnRubies Don't have nightmares!

verdantverdure · 28/06/2024 17:33

Can I please add Greg Hands in Chelsea and Fulham. He's so rude.

Bring this on.

MaggieFS · 05/07/2024 06:07

Good riddance to Rees Mogg.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 05/07/2024 06:10

Pleased Rees Mogg has lost. Gutted Braverman kept hers and Farage has got a seat. I hope it’s not the rise of Reform.

boys3 · 05/07/2024 06:42

Looks like the Liz Truss result is imminent - seems likely it’s bye-bye Liz. Returning Officer just coming out, all the candidates except one on stage.

verdantverdure · 05/07/2024 06:53

Wow. Truss lost

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 05/07/2024 06:55

Not by much. I worried about Reform in the next election.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/07/2024 06:56

Delighted to see the back of Truss and Rees Mogg.

MaggieFS · 05/07/2024 06:58

Truss out 😀

Paul2023 · 05/07/2024 06:58

Truss such a bad loser. Didn’t even say thanks or congratulate the Labour candidate.
She was their MP for 14 years. She just walked off

Good riddance anyway.

If Reform do well, it will be Labour's gain.
Labour do not have that many more votes than under Corbyn, but the lack of fear of Corbyn and the Reform party have undermined the Tories (it seems to me).
The Tories have held onto support far better in Scotland, where Reform are far weaker.
