Are there any 'Portillo moments' to look forward to?

Listening to 'The Rest is Politics', they predicted that Jacob Rees-Mogg was a possible Portillo moment in July. God I'd love that. Those of you who crunch numbers, are there any others?

Not a big name MP but the Tory's losing my constituency for the first time since 1850 or something like that would be a big moment as is apparently very possible.

Fingers crossed

What I would like to see is Farage split the Tory vote in Clacton and let a third party (I suspect Labour) through. That would really make my day.

How will pouring cash into these seats help? Are they planning to pay people to vote for the likes of Mordaunt and Fox?

Edited

So far in Liam Fox's constituency all we have seen as a result of the pouring of money in to support him is one measly leaflet that arrived today.

It's currently lining the bottom of the food waste caddy. Putting it in there was the easiest deal in history.

Now that would be something to savour. Don’t know if the constituency has any significant boundary changes but in 2019 over 72% voted Tory. And back in 2015 Clacton managed (not a compliment) to elect a UKIP MP, albeit the previous Tory incumbent who defected.

i can’t see Labour pulling that one out the bag TBH. But you never know in this election.

ilovesooty · 22/06/2024 00:50

I'm particularly looking forward to seeing Andrea Jenkyns and Philip Davies lose their seats.

Me too. We’re having an election night party and a friend is planning a game with treats as Tory MPs get voted out. We all had to vote on who merits the biggest celebrations. I have vetoed fireworks

That is the top treat of the night at our election night party and I have had to veto fireworks. We can’t drink for all 650 seats so we are confining ourselves to bigger majorityTories being voted out or Reform losing where somebody thought they might have a chance. And some of the treats are things like blaring out Kool and the Gang and all singing along or all jumping up and shouting LOOOOSERRRR! complete with L sign 😁

Cuwins · 22/06/2024 13:11

@verdantverdure 😂
That sounds fun!
I do hope you haven't got neighbours though

boys3 · 22/06/2024 13:17

My only worry @verdantverdure is you are likely going to run out of treats. Unless you’ve really stocked up. 😁

boys3 · 22/06/2024 13:19

Musically I’m minded to go with Queen.

Another one bites the dust

It’s a toss up between Shapps, Mordaunt, James Cleverley, Liz Truss.
After the local aggro about asylum seekers and RAF Wethersfield Cleverley could be a possibility.
Priti Patel - there’s a thought.

I think priti Patel could potentially keep her seat. She's very popular in her constituency!

Peregrina · 22/06/2024 14:39

Now don't count your chickens people. The fat lady hasn't sung yet.
(If you don't mind mixed metaphors.)

Hoping for a Leadsom one in South Northants. That may be a bit of a stretch but given boundary changes you never know.

She stood down. Not running.

I know that but I think I posted before she fell.

Let's see if we can beat Ms Bool into a cocked hat.

I am keeping everything crossed I get the pleasure of seeing the revolting Johnny Mercer humiliated. He is the most hideous man.

That’s definitely going to feature 😃We think we might get tired of hearing it a couple of hundred times though 😉

They’re invited. 😀

And I’ve insisted that the mass run down the garden with our t shirts over our heads must be silent 😃

He’s cooked his own goose with all decent people I would hope.

@verdantverdure
Well I think it sounds great fun!
My parents used to have 'election parties' but nothing lovely like that. Lots of chat with friends and my dad always did a chart that we would mark the different results on. I would generally stay up quite late as a teen to see some of it.
Although I was only a tween in 1997 and I do remember being woken by lots of laughter and excitement several times!

MILTOBE · 22/06/2024 20:51

Has anyone seen Jacob Rees Mogg lately? He's been very quiet, hasn't he? I would stay up all night to see his face if he was voted out.

I hope they get rid of Penny Mordaunt - if they don't then I think she'll be the next leader. If they do get rid of her then god knows who'll have the job.

Michael Gove - isn't he standing down anyway?

I'd like all the old Cameron men to lose their posts.

Most of all, I want Farage not to get a seat. It'll disrupt any debates for years.

We’ve told all the children they can stay up but of course they won’t. They’ll all be topping and tailing it and in sleeping bags and I hope they have lovely memories of this election just like yours of 1997.

My eldest is voting for the first time and he has been out leaflet dropping for the Lib Dems who are the tactical vote round here. The younger ones were fairly oblivious until the National Service debacle when they belatedly realised that who gets elected will actually affect their lives. 😆

Cuwins · 22/06/2024 21:01

@verdantverdure I don't know about lovely memories: I had to get up for school the next morning and was pretty peeved they kept waking me up! 😂

I can feel the need for a whole Spotify playlist

as the polls close the Police could Bring on the Night. And for the Clacton result I’d imagine all the other candidates will be humming Don’t stand so close to me or maybe a bit of Madness - Embarrassment, or a perhaps some Glee style mash-up. XTC’s Making plans for Nigel needs to feature somewhere. Kool and the Gang you’ve already factored in. Again not far into the early hours Paul Hardcastle’s Nineteen - the Destruction mix might be a thought. Obviously a bit of Lionel Richie - All night long will keep the party going.

I fear this may be exactly the memory our lot have of this election Grin

AutumnCrow · 22/06/2024 23:07

If (when) Mordaunt goes and Badenoch keeps her seat, then it'll be the latter for leader?
