Are there any 'Portillo moments' to look forward to?

Listening to 'The Rest is Politics', they predicted that Jacob Rees-Mogg was a possible Portillo moment in July. God I'd love that. Those of you who crunch numbers, are there any others?

Let’s not forget the chance of some decent campaigning gaffes as well!

Bromptotoo · 25/05/2024 07:04

Leadsom has stood down depriving us of the possibility of a 'were you still up for' momnent.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/05/2024 09:56

Oh how could I have overlooked the delight who is Jeremy Hunt. How sweet would that be?

lavenderlou · 25/05/2024 10:10

This would be a particularly satisfying watch:

If Braverman lost her seat, then the Portillo moment should be re-named the Braverman moment because that would top Portillo a million times over. I think I would weep with delight.

Yes - if she's still an MP she'll run for the Tory leadership

frankentall · 27/05/2024 18:14

I am hoping for Shaps (or whatever alias) to go. I find his lies especially offensive.

Redkatagain · 27/05/2024 18:19

He is my MP

I can't wait to be rid

verdantverdure · 19/06/2024 20:26

I'm looking forward to at least a hundred "Portillo moments". Preferably 200.

Daisymay2 · 19/06/2024 20:34

It’s a toss up between Shapps, Mordaunt, James Cleverley, Liz Truss.
After the local aggro about asylum seekers and RAF Wethersfield Cleverley could be a possibility.
Priti Patel - there’s a thought.

Peregrina · 20/06/2024 19:55

I would love to see Rees Mogg go. Gove and Redwood by standing down have deprived me of that possible pleasure.

Otherwise Truss and it's a long shot Sunak.

Shinyandnew1 · 20/06/2024 20:00

Reece-Mogg
Jonathan Gullis
Gillian Keegan
Andrea Jenkyns
Kemi Badenoch

sprigatito · 20/06/2024 20:04

Mogg and Gullis are my two to watch. Partly because neither one of them has the slightest ability to keep his rage and contempt off his face (Mogg is too spoiled and Gullis is too simple). And partly because they represent the two most loathsome archetypes of the male Tory, so seeing them both get fucked in the same night will bring me a beatific sense of deep inner peace I haven't experienced since breastfeeding.

Sweden99 · 20/06/2024 20:05

I find it depressing how many men in my home post-industrial poophole of a town actually believe that Rees Mogg would respect them.

StripedPiggy · 20/06/2024 20:12

IF the current polls are accurate & don’t change much, there could be several Portillo moments.

The Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, is vulnerable to the Lib Dems in Godalming & Jacob Rees Mogg is vulnerable in North Somerset.

Two likely candidates in the Tory leadership election which will happen after an election defeat could also lose. Grant Shapps, the Defence secretary, is in very serious trouble in Welwyn Hatfield and Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House, could lose in Portsmouth.

I would LOVE for her to lose her seat as she's my MP. She's worse in arak than in the media.

However she's back up to be predicted to win on electoral calculus currently with a 12% majority. LD and lab are equal predictions behind.

So depending on tactical votes who knows what will happen 🤷‍♀️

Potentially too many to count or list. Is there a collective noun for multiple Portillo moments?

boys3 · 20/06/2024 20:19

A celebration (of Portillo moments) being a bit too obvious and lacking in imagination.

AutumnCrow · 20/06/2024 20:21

A carriageful of Portillos

😁

though would one be big enough to accommodate them all?

If they travel like the rest of us - standing, crammed into 2nd class - they should be just fine.

A flotilla of Portillos?

boys3 · 20/06/2024 21:40

As in sunk without trace. Sounds good. an Armada even. 😀

Though I do like the cramped train carriage, ideally shunted into a desolate siding, never to leave.

I fear many of those who do suffer a Portillo moment will continue to profit from their self-enriching legacy. Whereas many in society will continue to struggle to recover from what they have left in their wake.

Penny Mordaunt - 10/1 on a nice Public Appointment within 3 months.

Cuwins · 20/06/2024 21:50

Not a big name MP but the Tory's losing my constituency for the first time since 1850 or something like that would be a big moment as is apparently very possible.
