My God I hated Thatcjer and all she stood for .. but at least I think she was honourable in her beliefs even if they were not mine .. but THIS LOT .. from BOJO onwards what a bunch of grifters ..

And before anyone says 'they are all the same ' .. I really don't think so ... At least in the 'lining their own pockets ' agenda .. AIBU to think this ?

This. I have had some very difficult conversations with some private schools where I've been giving evidence of how they can meet the child's needs with the EHCP provision and they've been adamant they can't for fear of bringing their achievement records down.

Some doesn't = all.
Not all private schools are ultra selective

Actually that's bollocks. Many SEN kids without EHCPs are in private schools because the smaller class sizes enables them to cope plus they can get 1-2-1 support without needing the proof that is required in state school. Most private schools aren't the ultra selective ones you see in London, they are made up of much more diverse cohorts.

You’re right on this. Private can offer that extra support with or without charging more

Did anyone say all? I certainly didn't.

OK but I'm not sure what your point is because some state schools can't accommodate EHCP requirements either. So basically some schools can't, whether they are private or state.

In both cases a lot of schools say they can't accommodate an EHCP student. Part of my job is to look at this and help schools see how they can meet the need with the EHCP. However in a selective private school (and I know, of course, that not all private schools are selective) they don't want a child with an EHCP for fear of bringing their grades down.

I have, on several occasions, had private schools say this to me very explicitly. Usually with state schools I can show them how it will work and they take that on board.

Of course we can always direct a state school to take a child anyway.

What state and private do doesn’t change that some parents have dc with SEN no ECHP will struggle to make the VAT

They’ll switch to state and extra funds and state places will need to be found.

EasternStandard · 10/05/2024 13:39

In relation to a job on this there'll be more highly stressed parents battling to get ECHP in state as they get pushed out by VAT increase

I can’t see how this helps the dc nor why it’s preferable, since dc will also feel the strain

Zonder · 10/05/2024 17:01

That's just tragic @DuncinToffee

Starmer’s trafficking plan is so bad I can’t believe anyone is looking forward to it.

A lightening rod to traffickers for obvious reasons. The only country to be foolish enough to go there.

Good luck

Zonder · 11/05/2024 08:06

I guess most people don't vote on one single issue but on the overall picture.

EasternStandard · 11/05/2024 08:07

Yep the overall picture will be pretty messy after that approach

EasternStandard · 11/05/2024 09:10

Omg had to turn to R4 as Times radio had some aerated person upset that VAT has plunged private enrolments

And greater strain will be on state sector as children will go there instead

Fucking idiots, how they are blind to logical and basic economic impact

Well it was obvious that was going to happen. Obvious to everyone except Labour. Oh but I forgot that now potential private DC are going to state then all the state schools will magically improve.

Using the 2.7% figure - before even being elected Labour have added approximately an extra 14,966 students to over crowded schools in the state sector for an extra cost to the treasury of £1.18m. Great economic thinking there!

This front page splash is based on a 0.1% decline in numbers at private schools.

According to the ISC which represents private schools, enrollments have fallen by 2.7%. The largest fall since 2011.

Thankfully many many people think it will most likely be better than the current overall picture

ISo forecast estimates have ranged between 5pc and 25pc.

Now this is 2.7% OBSERVED behaviour. This is before the election and before any announcement. Hard to argue this supports the lower end of IFS 3-7pc range. More consistent with >10%
Adam Smith paper indicated >10pc makes zero revenue for the VAT. That = zero income if the fall in enrollments/DC leaving private schools exceeed 10%

Zonder · 11/05/2024 09:37

It's kind of weird nobody is also blaming PS drop on the COL crisis. I know two families taking children out of private because of that. They've done it already so don't count in these figures but they can't be the only ones.

urbanbuddha · 11/05/2024 09:37

But the birth rate was falling in 2013, so secondary school applications will be lower now.
