I was reading an article in the Spectator this morning. Interesting to hear what people think.

Boring doesn’t bother me, but his tendency to sit on every single fence does.

His background isn't that though. He has kept his past views pretty quiet because they are pretty radical. He is an urban politician and the fact he still thinks men can become women show he has ideas that sound nice but are damaging long term.

CurlewKate · 29/12/2023 15:20

@Boomboom22 "Also not sure being a human rights lawyer is good for pm, they often go against what is best for the country."
Sorry, what????

IClaudine · 29/12/2023 15:23

Why are some so hung up about transgender people? Yes, it is new territory for transgender people to not have to hide who they are, but they have always existed. There are some issues to be ironed out. But we will do that and move on and transgender people will be accepted. Most sensible people aren't voting on the basis of who knows what a woman is or isn't.

I don't care that he's boring. I do care that he's inept, ineffective and presides over a cabinet that includes people who think men can have cervixes.

Yes, me too.

By definition, being transgender is hiding who you are. People are welcome to present however they like. That doesn't mean they become the opposite sex. Any politician who says that someone who was born male is a woman is a liar. And anyone who thinks that someone like Keir Starmer genuinely believes a transwoman is a woman is ridiculously naïve.

itsgettingweird · 29/12/2023 16:57

But he doesn't believe a trans woman is an actual woman.

People disagree won what trans people should access and shouldn't.

I don't agree with any governments position in this. It's in the Tory's watch trans woman have been allowed into woman's spaces and have raped them. No one shines in this area. The Tory's see woman as beneath men. As sex objects and as people with lesser rights who should stay home and make babies.

Thankfully the world outside of government have taken the lead on this and are generally making sensible decisions. We only hear about it more because SM is where people go to shout the loudest.

Because it’s all they’ve got. Now we’ve established that the Tories think sedating women to keep them docile is acceptable “knowing what a woman is” isn’t quite the appealing incentive to vote for them that some people would have us think.

Very good post. What good is it, repeating the line that labour don't know what a woman is when the Tories are the ones who think so lowly of a woman in the first place, and have let all the barriers fall as far as they have on women's spaces?

jgw1 · 29/12/2023 21:13

There are two reasons why the OPs question is ridiculous.

  1. https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/prediction_main.html
  2. His opponent is someone who manages to make a vacuum look like it is full of substance.

Except Kemi Badenoch has stood up in the House of Commons and said that she will re visited trans issues on various issues as they currently don't work in woman's and children's interests. Argued against by the womens equality minister Annalise Dodd and supported by others in the Labour party.
I don't think its the Torys fault all the barriers have fallen as women have been talked into it by the "Be Kind" brigade in this. Now the problems are clearly identified with men taking womens medals in sport or on all womens shortlists or turning up in single sex spaces there is a bit more awareness in general.

Tescos02 · 30/12/2023 00:24

Seriously, people want a pm to be exciting ??? omg,
what happened to being an effective pm, ???

Why not bring back tony blair

That's one Tory MP and one Labour MP. Look at how so many Tory MPs have treated women. Not exactly a good track record eh? And look at their policies as a whole. It's not just about their views on trans but the underlying message on how they view women in general.

Sometimes the trans issue is a red herring.

Bobbotgegrinch · 29/12/2023 10:10

But you can't be leader of the conservative party unless your "elected to the commons".

Yes, the Tories could change their internal rules, but they'd get absolutely crucified for it. It'd be electoral suicide (even more than their current fortunes).

The only way Cameron becomes PM before the General Election is if they parachute him in for a by-election somewhere, which he'd then have to win.

Is Wellingborough having a by-election due to Peter Bone? Not sure if they've chosen their candidate for this one yet.

Desecratedcoconut · 30/12/2023 08:12

Boring is fine. But I'm not fine with magical thinking or cowardice - and he's definitely one of the two. Gross disloyalty too while he sat on his hands and allowed troll face Russell-Moyle to boo and heckle Duffield in the midst of a misogynistic hissy fit.

BIossomtoes · 30/12/2023 08:19

What “magical thinking”?

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 30/12/2023 08:21

Yes there's a by-election, and there isn't a Tory candidate announced yet.

Peter Bone is apparently discussing with Reform whether to stand as their candidate.

BIossomtoes · 30/12/2023 08:24

Can you imagine what the media would do to Sunak if Cameron was allowed to be the candidate for Wellingborough? At what point would he have to be de-lorded? It would be hilarious.

Nothing as dramatic as you're anticipating, I imagine!

CormorantStrikesBack · 30/12/2023 08:31

Gordon Brown managed it.
Sunak isn’t exactly riveting.
Truss was dull apart from her unintentional stupidity.
Major was thought to be dull and it wasn’t till later we found out he was shagging Edwina Currie.

That’s an odd comment, I haven’t mentioned drama. Do you think it would be regarded as entirely normal?
