I was reading an article in the Spectator this morning. Interesting to hear what people think.

That’s an odd comment, I haven’t mentioned drama. Do you think it would be regarded as entirely normal?

'Can you imagine what the media would do to Sunak?' is a question which infers there would be some drama in the media about it. So my comment is not odd at all.

There aren't many left wing newspapers, so I would think Tory HQ press office would be sending positive spin out for publication in the supportive parts of the media. I can see how they'd try to make it a positive thing.

MmeSzyszkoBohusz · 30/12/2023 08:41

And mine! If we got Cameron as a candidate I would genuinely despair…

What “magical thinking”?

Believing you can change sex.

Are you a Tory voter though? They'd be appealing (or trying to!) to the staunch Northants Tories (bearing in mind its a very, very Blue county), not you, if you don't vote Tory generally.

Southpoint · 30/12/2023 08:49

Yes, he is boring but that is the least of my worries. Also, it is not just KS is the loonies that still remain in the Labour party. People are desperate but just wait and see how bad it would get if they win.

I took it as a reference to Brexit.

It implies nothing of the sort. The inference is all yours. You do remember how Cameron’s enoblement in order to make him Foreign Secretary dominated the news? How do you think reversing the process for political gain would go?

Presumably those who voted Brexit and for the Tories like drama, can't think of any other reason for voting for them?

I think if it was felt that Cameron could improve results for the Tories, the right-wing press would be mild about it, I am sure the Guardian and Mirror would run stories but the r-w press would downplay it.

I think it would be portrayed as 'nothing to see here'.

Is Wellingborough having a by-election due to Peter Bone? Not sure if they've chosen their candidate for this one yet.

Yes there's a by-election, and there isn't a Tory candidate announced yet.

Peter Bone is apparently discussing with Reform whether to stand as their candidate.

If Reform are even in discussions it would be a sign they have no vaguely decent candidates available at all. Why would any party want to stand the very candidate the electorate in that constituency have just voted to remove??

Oh, so thinking that has far less impact on each of our daily lives than the magical Brexit thinking.

Thank you for the clarification.

Seaitoverthere · 30/12/2023 09:24

Surely if you want drama and not boring then you watch Eastenders or something? Politics should be much more boring after the complete shit show we have lived through thanks to the current obsession with personality politics, massive damage has been done.

SalmonWellington · 30/12/2023 09:25

'Boring' is exactly what we need.

More important that all the magical thinking during Liz Truss' premiership?

Bone has (for some unknown reason) got a big personal following in his constituency, if he stood for Reform he’d have a significant impact on the Tory vote.

Yeah, just the decimation of a sex class, free speech, safeguarding, etc. But we all know how well the current brand of left regard these values. I can see why you aren't bothered.

Calm down dear. There’s no need for such drama.

SutWytTi · 30/12/2023 09:28

The biggest magical thinking the Tories have engaged in is that you can cut resources to every single service - health, police, education, courts, prisons, social care - and not comprehensively fuck up society.

The number of young people currently off work due to waiting for treatment/surgery that would enable them to get back to work is a prime example.

As for Tories caring about women - do they fuck. They have cut every single service that protects women and supports women.

FatCatatPaddingtonStation · 30/12/2023 09:28

I know people who worked with him in his previous role. He was known to be decent, hard working, ethical and with integrity. If I can have those traits, I'll live with boring.

Has Bone demonstrated that he knows what a woman is?

An accurate description of government policy for the past 13 years. Well done.

Is there any actual evidence of this 'big personal following'? Many MPs say this - but how many people really want to vote for someone who has been removed from their seat following the type of allegations Bone has faced?

I am fine for him to have an impact on the Tory vote, but what that says to me is Reform is struggling far more than UKIP did to get candidates - and they had issues too.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 30/12/2023 09:33

I can easily believe they have no decent candidates. But also you only need 10% of the electorate to call for a by-election in a recall petition, and I imagine the 13% who voted to kick Peter Bone out are perhaps not the people likely to vote Reform in the first place. Bone got 65% of the vote in the last election.
