From what I can see, after his entirely unconvincing "position" on gaza he has essentially disappeared from view. Blair notoriously used to do this a lot when he wanted to avoid legitimate questions, leaving brown nosing slaves to face questions from the proles.
So over to the mnet net, which I know has wise tentacles everwhere
Has the famous SIR dropped into your church fete/tombola recently? Selfies welcome.

I admit that I didn't open the link (I don't give The Guardian clicks) but it seems to be dated 30.12.23. Are you talking about a different article?

If you want to know what the plan is, Google is your friend.
That's not the way it works. If a political party wants our votes then they come to us, not the other way round.

What? You don't read the "evidence" you post in order to prove your point? How do you know you even have a point if you don't read media you disagree with and don't check evidence you provide?

And also if Kier replaces Kate Osborne with Rosie Duffield we might think he means what he says about women’s rights

Replace her as what? She only holds a junior post in the N Ireland Office.

Peasand · 02/01/2024 23:07

My bad, I thought she was on the same committee as Kemi Badenoch. Even so I’d like to see Kier publicly acknowledge Rosie.

Because the "evidence" was quoted on the MN thread. I assume that it was quoted faithfully and so I had no need to read the original.

It looks like you didn't read the thread that I linked to. Pot / kettle!

I give up. It appears that I am supposed to believe everything that Starmer has ever said - even though he never says anything - but disbelieve everyone else.

BIossomtoes · 02/01/2024 23:22

How can you believe what people don’t say?

Well if you assumed it, it must be true!Hmm You are starting out with a belief or bias and then seeking confirmation. So sure are you when you've found your gotcha you don't check it.

It is the opposite of Critical Thinking Senua.

Back to the subject of Starmer, I read a quote on another thread:
"It is difficult to identify the purpose of a future Starmer government – what he seeks to accomplish beyond achieving office."
And who is saying "I have no idea what Starmer stands for"? The Guardian!!Shock

If a left-leaning national newspaper can't see his "politics and justice" agenda then do you really think that the person on the Clapham Omnibus can either? He is a void. People don't vote for voids; they opt for "better the devil you know".

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4974184-young-labour-piling-on-tonia-antoniazzi-on-twitter

He is a void. People don't vote for voids; they opt for "better the devil you know".

But people know that Sunak will be gone after the GE and the Tory Party will once again descend into chaos and infighting, so they don't know what "devil" they're going to get if they vote Conservative.

And that's on top of wrecking our economy, our institutions and our rights. Oh and the corruption and lies. The Rape Culture in the party, Covid, Brexit and Austerity. The Tory Party have alienated their core demographics including Tory Party Members.

Is this the sort of women’s refuge which admits blokes in dresses and tells women to reframe their trauma.? Because without proper assurances that is meaningless

You do know that over 50% of women seeking help from a DV situation, don't get any? that the Tories taxed their panic rooms? (only withdrawing this tax after all the outrage from charities, womens groups and the opposition Labour Party.

That funding to councils to provide these services has been halved.

That the Tories have had years to prevent the tiny proportion of trans women in refuges being there but have chosen to nothing about it, that despite the talk, the tories still allow "men in dresses" to be sent to womens prisons.

Yet you support all of this.

oatleytap · 03/01/2024 09:15

That's not the way it works. If a political party wants our votes then they come to us, not the other way round.

It’s called a manifesto. They will publish one when the time comes.

But you have to go and read it.

They’re not going to come to your home and provide you with a laminated copy for your coffee table.

There’s a word for people who take an ideological position and refuse to seek out information that might challenge that position.

Please don’t be one of those. You’re better than that.

I'm not asking for costed detail, I'm asking for the general direction of travel

Here he is telling you his general direction of travel. Just skip to his speech.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SMnrk5i7e84&pp=ygUSS2llciBzdGFybWVyIEJsYWly

But you’re not going to get policies. Not until the election.

Neither side have set out their policies for the election.

You think you know more about what the Tories stand for, because they’ve repeatedly had leadership elections where the next person to have a pop at running the country gets to set out their agenda.

Thats how it works and how it has always worked.

When there is a need to win votes, they will set out their proposals. Exactly as Sunak did when the Tory party last needed a new leader.

But you can't give up on them @jgw1. Please say you won't give up on them. They need you. We need you. You are so good at explaining their policies.GrinThanks

Thank you.

It is quite easy as their main policy is to ensure the rich get richer and never mind everyone else.

But of course it is Labour that has no policies.
I must say I thought Sunak's stop the boats day yesterday was a triumph (presumably he has ditched increasing climate change which he announced in September). I mean who else could pull of a day talking about how they had triumphantly met a target, having not met the target and thus entirely drawing attention to how much worse that particular issue has got under his leadership.

What is Starmer going to do to remove the tiny number of men from women’s refuges?

BIossomtoes · 03/01/2024 09:45

What is Starmer going to do to remove the tiny number of men from women’s refuges?

What’s Sunak doing? And what did he do to prevent them being there in the first place?

Don't be daft, its not Sunak's job to run the country, that is what Starmer should be doing and before him But Jeremy Corbyn.

err he can't, he can't do anything about that, he isn't in Government & the next GE may be up to 12 months away.

Sunak can though, he and his party allowed them in, cut funding and only they can address the issue right now.

senua · 03/01/2024 10:25

oatleytap · Today 09:15: Here he is telling you his general direction of travel.
Thank you. Finally, somebody gave me a clue what Starmer is about.

There was a lot of "motherhood and apple pie". I was given a tip to listen to what a politician is saying and wonder, "would anyone say the opposite?"
Would anyone say "I'm against growth" or "I believe that the future will be worse"? Nah.
Most of the speech was unspecific waffle but my ears pricked up at 1:11. He said "the project is to return Labour to the service of working people". He used the phrase several times and it is clear that when he says "working people" he means "working people" and not "working class". No mention of the unemployed, the long term sick, the SAHP, the pensioner, the minor, etc. Labour is for the workers only.
As a soon-to-be-pensioner his message is not, for me, a vote winner.

I went back to check the date of the speech and, in doing so, clocked the comments underneath. Oh dear ...

Working people have pensioner parents, they have children, they have partners who may be SAHP's.

Glad he never went down the working class route, vast majority are, we need to work "Working People"

As a soon to be pensioner, i'd be looking at the state of the NHS after 13 years and thinking to myself "How long will i need to wait for hip/knee surgery? can i get a dentist?"

Even if you have PHI now, as you age and income falls, will you still be able to afford the premiums.

IClaudine · 03/01/2024 10:40

That is quite the reach, there. Improving the lives of working people would include better healthcare, better transport, better housing. Do you think non-working people will somehow be barred from those improvements? And no political party wants to alienate pensioners, that would be political suicide.

However, to be fair, I do wonder about Labour's approach to welfare benefits given Reeves' past statements. But we will see what the manifesto says.

jgw1 · 03/01/2024 12:00

I haven't had time to listen to what Starmer had to say this morning, far too busy.

I do know that he had a beer once, doesn't know what a woman is, doesn't have any policies and But Jeremy Corbyn so won't be voting for him.

BIossomtoes · 03/01/2024 12:05

I get it @senua, you just don’t like him and it would make no difference what he said. There are politicians who do that to me too. Most of the current cabinet in fact.

DuncinToffee · 03/01/2024 13:02

Reform UK is branding themselves as 'the party of the working class'

They a held a press conference shown on GB News earlier today

Just pointing out there are other parties to vote for

So presumably they oppose Brexit then and will have a manifesto that includes rejoining the EU. I shall have to look into their other policies, perhaps they are the party for me.

DuncinToffee · 03/01/2024 14:32

They aren't suggesting it should be an armed conflict with the EU, so that's a start (Ben Habib clarified this)
