anyone seen starmer?

From what I can see, after his entirely unconvincing "position" on gaza he has essentially disappeared from view. Blair notoriously used to do this a lot when he wanted to avoid legitimate questions, leaving brown nosing slaves to face questions from the proles.
So over to the mnet net, which I know has wise tentacles everwhere
Has the famous SIR dropped into your church fete/tombola recently? Selfies welcome.

In case people are still searching for him, Keir Starmer is giving a speech to the Civil Society Summit

Sky News is reporting

what did he say though?
Anything of substance?
I did with sound off momentarily catch sight of him giving some sort of speech with a banking logo behind him.
He surely has one of the least convincing speech techniques of any politico I remember. He was very noticeably looking sideways at the teleprompter pretty often - hardly helps a sense of passion (though maybe he doesn't have a lot) - you would think they would put the teleprompter in front/below him at least.
Anyways - do tell us what he said please.

Why not listen yourself?! If you've got it on, put the sound on.

You're so determined to slag him off, aren't you? Even when you're not listening to a word he's saying.

Offwiththecircus · 22/01/2024 11:35

I couldn't put the sound on.
Am still interested in a report on it.
If folk saw and don't want to feed back on, somewhat odd - did he reveal any state secrets?
If folk don't want to reply or provide a link may try to dig it out in time.

>>You're so determined to slag him off, aren't you?

Hardly - just been serially disappointed in him - entirely natural to form judgements on people based on what they say/history. Everyone does it. Unless a goldfish,

BIossomtoes · 22/01/2024 11:38

Unless a goldfish what?

would have thought clear.
In life (all areas) you remember stuff about folks - you don't start afresh each time as if you have encountered them/heard them for the first time.* You build a picture. This isn't bias.

(* some folks may have done with Boris of course - since he notoriously said different things at different times. Or different things to different people. But many reported)

And now you're going back to the odd quoting.

In life (all areas) you remember stuff about folks - you don't start afresh each time as if you have encountered them/heard them for the first time.* You build a picture. This isn't bias.

This ^ is called confirmation bias. It's absolutely biassed on your behalf. The fact that you're drawing conclusions from just watching him speaks volumes.

BIossomtoes · 22/01/2024 11:58

Not just odd quoting but also a very odd writing style. Complete sentences are very helpful I find.

pointythings · 22/01/2024 12:13

You seem very focused on style over substance, OP. Bit sad, really.

You say you want rebuilding of the Tory wreckage; that will take time, hard work and investment. You just want someone with a magic wand. Sorry, this is the real world, where there is a giant Tory mess to clear up. It's going to take serious adult politics, not shallow soundbites like you seem to crave.

Odd quoting? As I said, am not a pro at this place - my quoting still clear I think.

It's not "confirmation bias" - we are talking about a person, not an experiment with ball bearings in a bowl or whatever. My ideas about him so far have not been drawn from watching with no sound - but from listening listening. So not "just from". I have noted his somewhat passionless delivery before though. As if reading a multi-drafted script.

Online writing/comms is somewhat different from more formal writing. And is usually accepted as long as the meaning is clear. People are sometimes typing on less than perfect devices.

If anything is unclear, do feel free to ask, politely, for clarification of course.

It may surprise you to know that my background is use of the English language.

Your "point" is somewhat odd in any case since your last post was solely comprised of:

>>Unless a goldfish what?

I think I understood. And replied to what I understood.

Sky is reporting on it on their website too, Politics Hub, if you want to read it

https://news.sky.com/story/politics-latest-rishi-sunak-rwanda-bill-tory-rebellion-commons-votes-resignations-12593360

thanks, but I couldn't find a full vid or report on it.
I gather that he was talking about "culture wars" and the National Trust at one point. I did see one critical report that bemoaned a certain lack of substance and policy.

Not sure what is a "bit sad".
And I thought it pretty clear from my posts that what I was very much focussed on was substance.
Where on earth you could have got the idea from that I crave soundbites I don't know.
Have you been reading someone else's posts?
Feel free to post a link to yesterday's sky film so I can search for substance.

So you can quote quite happily if you want to, as you've just quoted me and others!

And I have pointed out, and I'm asking you politely, to follow the conventions that most people use on Mumsnet of quoting properly. i.e. use the quote function, or c+p the relevant bit, or even - heaven forfend - use correct, literary punctuation to quote other people

It's much less obvious, and therefore not as easy to read, when you quote the way you (sometimes choose to) do.

And 'confirmation bias' is nothing to do with experiments - no idea where you got this idea from! - and it is absolutely about having an innate prejudice towards something or someone, which you're looking to confirm every time you see or hear anything about that thing or person. In your case, Sir Keir Starmer.

BIWI · 23/01/2024 09:18

Not really sure why we're doing all the work for him, @BIossomtoes!

Any chance of you sharing the that critical report you found?

beguilingeyes · 23/01/2024 09:37

I thought that the culture war bit of the speech was very good, and relevant. The Tories are stirring up endless nonsense about statues and whatnot that we're supposed to get excited about because it's all they've got left.
Meanwhile the country is falling to pieces.

You could easily have Googled this for yourself, but to help you, here you are:

thanks.
will check out.
With regards to the stock answer in so many of these things, makes you wonder why anyone ever asks a question on here.
Will watch, digest, may be back.
Checking out soundbite/substance ratio,

Though must say a lot of the culture wars stuff seems to come from the supposed left in my experience.
Am perpetually horrified to see how so much decent "political correctness" of the 80s has morphed into rampant me me me identity politics.

Don't be so disingenuous! For someone so keen to discredit Sir Keir Starmer, if you really were bothered, you'd have found that link for yourself, quite easily.

Which does make me wonder if you're just here to goad us, actually.
