anyone seen starmer?

From what I can see, after his entirely unconvincing "position" on gaza he has essentially disappeared from view. Blair notoriously used to do this a lot when he wanted to avoid legitimate questions, leaving brown nosing slaves to face questions from the proles.
So over to the mnet net, which I know has wise tentacles everwhere
Has the famous SIR dropped into your church fete/tombola recently? Selfies welcome.

He mentions this a bit in his book but, on the whole, he sidesteps it and any responsibility for it. For example, pages and pages on prisons but no huge reflection on funding and cuts

Back to the subject of Starmer, I read a quote on another thread:
"It is difficult to identify the purpose of a future Starmer government – what he seeks to accomplish beyond achieving office."
And who is saying "I have no idea what Starmer stands for"? The Guardian!!Shock

If a left-leaning national newspaper can't see his "politics and justice" agenda then do you really think that the person on the Clapham Omnibus can either? He is a void. People don't vote for voids; they opt for "better the devil you know".

@senua that article dates back to April. If a week is a long time in politics, 8 months is a lifetime. Try harder.

If you want to know what the plan is, Google is your friend. And given the Tory penchant for nicking a Labour idea and then taking the credit, they're being sensible to hang fire until a GE has been called and a manifesto needs to be issued.

senua · 02/01/2024 12:17

I admit that I didn't open the link (I don't give The Guardian clicks) but it seems to be dated 30.12.23. Are you talking about a different article?

If you want to know what the plan is, Google is your friend.
That's not the way it works. If a political party wants our votes then they come to us, not the other way round.

This. Remember the windfall tax on energy companies? That was a bastardised Labour policy. Starmer’s being very astute, as the saying goes “Never interfere with an enemy in the process of destroying himself.”

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2024 12:27

I think if the only line of attack they have on Starmer is that he is a bit dull, they are really really desperate.

I'm not asking for costed detail, I'm asking for the general direction of travel. The only thing I know about Starmer is that he sits on the fence about everything.
It's going to take a lot to shift that public perception of him, especially if he only does it as a last minute pre-election thing.

He’s more popular than Sunak and Labour has been 20 points ahead in the polls for over a year. I’d say he’s doing just fine as far as public perception’s concerned. And, of course, there’s this.

Since people don't vote for voids, and all the polling for the last year has shown people not wanting to vote for Sunak, I take it you are in agreement that Sunak is a void?

The amazing thing is that if you had to attend a party with Sunak and Starmer, its not Starmer who you would come away thinking was dull.

I guess you are not a fan of looking at evidence for example from opinion polls.

If you think the 'devil you know' did a good job for the last 13 years, why not just say so rather than retort to whataboutery.

I am seriously considering voting Tory at the next election, because Starmer is not the sort of person who one would doff ones cap to in the street, and that really is what I am looking for in a Prime Minister. After all Starmer only accidentally went to a private school.

IClaudine · 02/01/2024 13:29

I agree Starmer sits on the fence too much in public, but on the other hand it s a good vantage point from which to watch the Tories destroy themselves.

He will hop off that fence soon, when a GE is called. Probably not a bad tactic.

BIossomtoes · 02/01/2024 13:35

That’s a very useful link Duncin. I can see that coming in very handy over the next few months.

Labour 3pts down in just a month? not so long ago it was 25pt lead, know 17.

Then there is the potential for a Reform deal, like Farage did with the Brexit Party, so there is another 5 or 6% to the Tories.

There is perhaps another 12 months until the GE, plenty of time for the idiots within their own party to criticise Labour.

I ve long believed Labour could lose the next GE.

Never underestimate the British electorates ability to vote against their own best interests.

Peasand · 02/01/2024 14:13

DuncinToffee · 02/01/2024 13:28

Labour also restated its commitment to single-sex spaces in unequivocal terms: “there will always be places where it is reasonable for biological women only to have access”.

https://labourlist.org/2023/09/labour-trans-rights-gender-policy-women-together/

Are they going to tell this to Moyles and the others MRAs and TRAs. Where’s Rosie Duffield

Perhaps the Tories need to see this is Labours direction and then stop talking and start doing, perhaps funding DV refuge's to the level they inherited in 2010? maybe a ban on date rape "jokes" might help too?

Looking at this summary poll of polls, it is possible that November was particularly strong for Labour, rather than there having been a Tory resurgence in December.

There is little change if one compares now to a year ago.

The best predictor of a GE outcome is 'best PM'

Starmer is ahead of Sunak in all but 4 constituencies.

Is this the sort of women’s refuge which admits blokes in dresses and tells women to reframe their trauma.? Because without proper assurances that is meaningless

Peasand · 02/01/2024 22:43

And also if Kier replaces Kate Osborne with Rosie Duffield we might think he means what he says about women’s rights

I have voted Tory several times.
The Tories I voted for bear no resemblance to the current government.
In fact I would go as far to suggest like you the current government are not Tories.

But you can't give up on them @jgw1. Please say you won't give up on them. They need you. We need you. You are so good at explaining their policies.GrinThanks
