I think it’s unfair to say the Conservatives choose the police! That’s squarely down to the police. Some of these horror officers were recruited under Labour! That’s a cheap jibe because they didn’t control recruitment either. All of us expect the police to have responsible recruitment snd discipline policies. Labour will expect high standards as the Conservatives do. One issue will be that a recruitment push tends to cut corners. That’s not good in the king run either. On line applications, poor filtering systems and lack of face to face evaluation isn’t helping. Neither is the police attribute of sticking together and covering up.

Whats the alternative?

Without Teachers and Healthcare staff, these sectors fail or continue to fail, too many well paid alternatives for degree educated people in this country and beyond.

What is the Tories policy toward migrants? is it working, deterring more crossing or not?

Another serial rapist within the Police force, this time Dorset police... whatever the Tories say about women it is not protecting us... at all.... & thanks to their cuts, 50% of women seeking a place in Domestic violence refuge are turned away.

All this after 13 years, 15 by the time of the next GE.

I thought the next GE was next year ?!

Alexandra2001 · 31/01/2023 16:37

The Police are answerable to the Home Office and hence the Government of the day (Lab or Con)
They set the criteria under which the Police operate, the Govt of the day is as responsible for how the Police operate as they are the NHS, the Education system or the MOD etc.

Its no more a cheap jibe than the constant "Labour don't know what a woman is....." ignoring the fact that Labour aren't in power, aren't responsible for shambles we see in prisons or lack of single sex wards in the nhs... and around 50% of Labour MPs are women, significantly more than the Cons.

The latest it could be is early 2025 cos this Parliament can't go past December 2024, but there isn't a GE immediately after the Parliament dissolves. Has to be a few weeks first to sort everything out. It's 14 or 15 depending on whether you round up or down. If they manage to hold on that long of course.

TizerorFizz · 31/01/2023 20:45

The police have the laws of the land to uphold within their own forces. They are not exempt but they are not controlled by the Home Office.

@Alexandra2001 You are not correct. We do not have a stare/Government controlled Police force. The Police must work with the Home Office but are not answerable to them on a day to day basis. Thank God. The Institute of Government is a good source of info: as attached.

Boris for PM? Please don't make me laugh.

chaosmaker · 05/04/2023 22:51

@Dodie66 what do you think now?

Grantanow · 21/05/2023 17:17

'Fraid not. He'll be too busy changing nappies, ordering wallpaper, mucking out the moat and then resting up on some private Island courtesy of a rich friend.

Port1aCastis · 09/06/2023 21:27

Well he's resigned as MP so I feel extremely happy now.
All his dodgy dealings have come back to bite him on his fat arse. Oh dear how sad never mind

Abhannmor · 10/06/2023 16:15

Nigel Adams MP for Selby ...resigned. Falling like skittles now. Annoyed his peerage was nixed I suppose?

Bozza will drag them all down...

Bramblejoos · 10/06/2023 19:13

Cons MPs are jumping ship cos labour will probably get in at the next election.
However if these lot sod off there is just time for a decent Tory MP to get in to replace them which would mean they are a bit
more likely to hold the seat against labour.

HRTQueen · 10/06/2023 19:23

not a surprise

Boris Johnson is lining himself up for after the next election

hopefully the Tories will be bored of his ego but I’m not so sure I think much shall depend on how many seats return back to Labour and what seats

Tories have others lined up who have more integrity (not difficult) but voter appeal is another thing and the Tories will go for the leader that is most likely to win they shall be thinking already of the 2029 election

TizerorFizz · 10/06/2023 19:28

I actually think they need to stay with Richi. All this change is hugely off putting. They are like rats in a sack with Boris as King Rat. It needs to stop.

BustyDisplay · 10/06/2023 19:35

Johnson is another Trump and will hang about like a bad smell, shouting at traffic and claiming to be a victim.

overtaxedunderling · 10/06/2023 19:54

@BustyDisplay Johnson and Trump are atypical politicians. They are both shameless liars, but is that really any different to Starmer's pledges that evaporated, Reeves Green Prosperity Fund that now kicked into the long grass, or that lovely Clegg who flipped on tuition fees?
Among the more orthodox politicians, the 1922 Committee had rules that said Truss couldn't be challenged for a year, Sunak (and probably Starmer) will not be able to credibly state who a Conservative PM would be for the duration of the next Parliament.

TizerorFizz · 10/06/2023 20:42

It shows it is absolutely ludicrous to make promises you might not be able to keep in the cold light of day! Fiscal reality means that any responsible politician must look at all the angles surrounding a policy. Clegg made promises from the luxurious position of thinking he would not govern. He did not have sole control over policies. He was a minority voice in a Tory led administration. So his unaffordable policy was dumped. Rightly so. Rachel Reeves can see we cannot afford the green policy at the pace she wanted. Politicians really must look critically at policies and adjust them. So sensibly, she has.

chaosmaker · 11/06/2023 01:03

Sadly Caroline Lucas is no longer standing as our only Green MP. She's been a voice of reason against the appalling lack of care both main parties have taken of the country they all claim to love. Very depressing.
Tories will do anything to complete the destruction of everything. Just look at the mess that is happening under a defensive Houchen. The continual lies told about everything. We need a GE under a proper voting system. NOT FPTP.

TizerorFizz · 11/06/2023 08:48

Unfortunately green policies cost a lot of money. The cost of living crisis means hard up families cannot bear any further tax rises to pay for this. Individually you can buy an electric car and do all sorts of measures to be green. You might also like to have a word with Russia, China and the USA on their policies causing global warming and price inflation.

I think we are starting to see, NOT adopting green policies costs a lot more money.

TizerorFizz · 11/06/2023 11:12

@Kendodd When has politics been long term? People look at their finances NOW. They don’t want to pay more when mortgage costs are doubling. Yes, long term is obviously desirable but to get votes, short term always wins. It’s often about money people have. Many voters look to China and the USA and think we are minnows in this issue and don’t like the look of costs. You won’t change that.

overtaxedunderling · 11/06/2023 12:58

@Kendodd NOT adopting green policies is cheaper as huge amounts of the money is either wasted or does more harm than good.
It's not enjoyable, but Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Energy squirms when asked what the global impact will be of the US taxpayer spending $50,000,000,000,000 by 2050. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/t-Lep2vT1gs
Small, practical things can make differences, but allowing electricity marketing companies to base the price of electricity generated from renewables on a temporarily high price of gas is bonkers.
There is no representative democracy and the politicians seem to get very wealthy from their backers.
I can live with Sadiq Khan banning my car to save a child from an asthma attack - the fact that he couldn't care less about that child if I pay £12.50 I find problematic.

The choice there is money OR life, basically

chaosmaker · 19/06/2023 12:41

Also going on about nuclear is not realistic as it would still take at least a decade to build a new reactor. Surely within that time we could get on with better research into things like green hydrogen?

TizerorFizz · 19/06/2023 12:46

Nuclear energy deliberately for millions. Other research might but it’s not tried and tested. You cannot get a quart out of a pint pot. People are up against it financially. It doesn’t mean they don’t care but uk is a minnow in this. Others are the big players. Until they change we won’t see any improvement. Unfortunately most worry about the here and now because money available to them dictates this.

TizerorFizz · 19/06/2023 19:53

Sorry. Nuclear energy powers millions of homes. It’s been around for decades.
