I agree with @Kendodd & @sashagabadon
There is no chance we've seen the last of Johnson yet.
He is still fairly young so if he can live more healthily (!) he could easily be back as PM in 10/15 years time. Let Sunak take the flak for BJ / LT mess. Labour gets in in 2024/5, then after a term (where they will still be cleaning up the crap) BJ tries again in about 2030. Mark my words... <groan>

Bojo is finished.. if he cannot garner just 100 MPs at this moment in time, he never will be PM or leader of the Con party again.

I suspect the lure of the (lucrative) after dinner speech circuit will prove to be far more attractive to him.

He'll be the pub bore who tells us all he could have played for England if he hadn't had that knee injury.... ..

...and given his obesity and love of booze, he wont be with us for too long.

Anniefrenchfry · 24/10/2022 19:55

Boris did have the votes, he had 102, it was independently verified and validated by the 1922 or whomever Is managing this, the votes were already submitted, and the committee put out a statement confirming., I assume as so many thought he was lying.

but no, he did have the votes and he could have went through and he likely would have won, he didn’t as he felt two thirds of the party were against him and he couldn’t govern.

HRTQueen · 24/10/2022 19:59

I think this has suited Johnson things are too difficult for him to manage at the moment too much like hard work

next election Labour shall win and he returns to save the party the following election by that time many will have forgotten many of his mistakes and once again voters will be charmed by his bumbling. He may need to invest in a wig by then as it’s so much part of his persona (that’s how shallow he is)

Croque · 24/10/2022 20:29

There is always a margin of error required so 102 would have been too close to 100. Anyway, I think he sensed that it was not his time right now and could not be bothered to sort out the gifts left by Liz and Kwazi.

Disagree... attacks on his wealth wont go down well and will lead to accusations of "anti aspiration"

Have you any evidence Sunak is Starmers choice, or just your opinion, that you are stating as fact?

Pick Bojo and it opens up his entire integrity question again and will lead to further negative market reaction... so higher mortgages, damage to pensions and higher govt borrowing costs.

@Alexandra2001 - Well that didn't take long:

Zarah Sultana added: “So Rishi Sunak – the richest MP in history – is going to become Prime Minister, with plans to cut funding for public services and slash workers’ wages.

Labour MP Nadia Whittome wrote: “Rishi Sunak and his wife sit on a fortune of £730,000,000. That’s around twice the estimated wealth of King Charles III.
Remember this whenever he talks about making “tough decisions” that working class people will pay for.

She has also already deleted a tweet that said 'Rishi Sunak as prime minister isn't a win for Asian representation'

Sounds like she hadn't read the room:

www.reuters.com/world/asian-britons-celebrate-proud-moment-sunak-takes-top-job-2022-10-24/

Looks like Labour have set their stall out already and Sunak has not been in the job 24hrs so, I suspect it's as I said in my earlier post, they will milk his personal wealth for all it's worth (whilst turning a blind eye to KS millions) and it will be like a stuck record.

MargaretThursday · 24/10/2022 20:55

I said yesterday that BJ would only stand if he was pretty certain of winning.

He'd like to do a "well, I don't really want to stand, but as everyone wants me to, for the good of the country I'll put my own thoughts aside and put up with it."
He wouldn't want to have to fight and then lose.

FinallyHere · 24/10/2022 20:55

Yeah, right.

No one on twitter seems to be able to link to the 1922 committee saying this.

Neither of the two you quote are on the Labour Front bench, they are on the far left & don't represent Labour policy, they are idiots.

TBH i'm more concerned about the racist Tory party member who said that none of the members he knows will accept Sunak as "British" shameful.

Play back Brady's announcement... only one valid candidate i.e only one got to the required 100 votes.

If either or both Mordaunt or Johnson got to 100, they'd have stood.

Anniefrenchfry · 24/10/2022 21:36

Yes, only one valid candidate as boris didn’t stand.

they have confirmed he had them well before. Just Google the announcement.

there was one valid candidate as boris did not enter , he announced that on Sunday night.

Annie is there a link to this statement? thanks

Interesting, can you link to that? i can only find he had 59 votes and Mordaunt 90.
Nothing from 1922 on if he had the 100 needed or not.

The numbers don't stack up either, 90 + 102 + 200 ? thats more than they have MPs and doesn't bode well for party unity, if Sunak can't command majority support.

noblegiraffe · 24/10/2022 21:48

I have, and I've looked all over twitter and all I can see is people claiming that the 1922 committee said this and people asking for proof and not getting it.

A Boris supporter saying that someone told them that he had the nominations is not a statement from the 1922 committee.

Alexandra2001 · 24/10/2022 21:50

Bojo has egg on his face, apt for a clown.

He never got the votes at all.

Anniefrenchfry · 24/10/2022 21:51

It was bob Blackman, joint secretary of the 1922 who undertook and confirmed the validation. You can tweet him to confirm or search it yourself. But unless you’re accusing the joint secretary of the 1922 of lying then yup. Boris had it but didn’t proceed as he felt two thirds of rhe party were against him and he couldn’t govern them,

noblegiraffe · 24/10/2022 21:56

It was Nigel Adams, Boris supporter, who claimed he had a private conversation with Bob Blackman who said this.

Can you link to Bob Blackman saying this?

Its reported 2nd hand by jack elsom that Bob Blackman says BJ had the 102 votes, nothing from BB himself.

So hearsay.

noblegiraffe · 24/10/2022 22:00

What I find intriguing is that both Johnson and Mordaunt supporters claimed that their respective candidates had the numbers and yet they didn't have the public numbers, both claimed that their backers were secret.

It turned out in the end that Penny definitely didn't have the numbers despite the claims.

Rishi didn't seem to have problems with lots of secret backers.

I think that might be code for "i haven't the numbers but i'll pretend i have"

TizerorFizz · 24/10/2022 23:45

Mordaunt’s team said they had 90 earlier today. They were still scrambling for Boris defectors but didn’t get them. She obviously could have pulled out earlier. No one can find a definitive link to BJ getting over 100. More lies!

noblegiraffe · 24/10/2022 23:47

Mordaunt's team were saying they had over 100 before they had to admit she didn't.

Boris chose not to run rather than admit he didn't.

Boris for PM
LizzieSiddal · 25/10/2022 08:28

I knew Mordant wouldn’t pull out until the last minute. She reminds me so much of Johnson, arrogant, rather lacking in intellect and selfish.

TizerorFizz · 25/10/2022 08:33

Yes. She’s not the brightest. Tends to spout rhetoric with no original thought. Never had a cabinet job for more than 5 minutes.

Twas always so. And always looking stroppy. However, the sombre facial expression has had a positive anti aging effect in her case as she looks exactly the same as she did decades ago.
