I hope I’m wrong, but I really can’t see Boris resigning. The man has no shame and no concern for anything other than himself, so he gives not a shit if he finishes off the Tories in the next election. Plus he has the cockroach-like ability to survive and thrive that only privileged oiks like him enjoy.

Provenceinthesummer · 05/07/2022 18:50

There are plenty of possibilities for the top jobs, and I am sure the Johnson team will already have someone lined up, this has been well flagged for months. This is the last roll of the die to get rid of Johnson before recess.

Nadine spotted walking into number 10 according to Twitter

Runnerbeansflower · 05/07/2022 18:52

I think Javid and Sunak are betting on having enough of a profile to be able to survive without him. Plus the credibility of taking him down (at this very late stage!)

The others? Their careers are over with BJ's, so their only hope is to stay loyal

Please can someone explain what this means in a TLDR - is it possible the tories won't be in government anymore or do we not know?

No.

The Tory party still have a majority of almost 80 seats in Parliament. Whoever is leader & PM, they will remain in government until the next general election, which could be as far away as December 2024.

Nat6999 · 05/07/2022 18:55

It's just been said on the news that they have most likely resigned ready for a leadership contest.

PeekAtYou · 05/07/2022 18:55

Correction.
Just watched her on video running into number 10. He's going to make her Chancellor isn't he?

MermaidEyes · 05/07/2022 18:56

Boris and Nadine Dorries have just been spotted heading into No.10, he probably needs a bit of an...ego.....massage......

They are saying Raab is loyal to bojo

Susannah Reid absolutely annihilated him this morning!

Nah, that will be Michael Fabricant, I reckon. The cabinet of the clowns.

BJ can trigger a General Election as PM.

The MPs who think they will lose at an election if called right now will have every incentive (apart from conscience) to prevent it by supporting him.

Those who have a chance at winning if come out at the last minute against BJ have every incentive to oppose it, as the chances are that keeping him in power reduces their chance of keeping their seat when the GE finally comes, as it will eventually.

3amAndImStillAwake · 05/07/2022 19:00

BJ can trigger a General Election as PM.

Can he? I thought parliament would still have to vote for it?

Runnerbeansflower · 05/07/2022 19:01

I said when the leadership vote was triggered it was over for BJ. Once a leader gets to that point there is no way back.

Didn't know it would be this soon!

No. I'd guess they both think this the best way to keep a Tory government. The next election is more than 2 years away, plenty of time for the party to regroup under a more credible leader (likely one of them, in their minds). The longer Johnson remains in place the harder it will be for them to win next time.

I don't think this is good news if you're hoping for a change of government. The electorate is basically right wing. I think many would have found it hard to vote for Johnson again, but a straight Labour v Conservative and it will be business as usual by Dec 24 IMO

Nat6999 · 05/07/2022 19:04

Labour Mp's are drinking Champagne in the parliament bar

Parliament wouldn’t vote to prevent an election.

I might be wrong, willing to be corrected, but if the PM recommends to the Queen there's a GE then that happens?

Although that may be from before the fixed term Parliament laws.

So if the Conservatives have a leadership election and the new leader gets enough MPs on board they can continue.

I don't know

SnowyLamb · 05/07/2022 19:05

No Conservative is going to call a GE now. Surely they wouldn't be that stupid.

EmmaH2022 · 05/07/2022 19:06

TerffLonDon · 05/07/2022 18:32

Well, Blow Job didn’t go when he was supposed to, so the behind the scenes machinations had to go nuclear so he doesn’t have the choice anymore. And all of that is fine, except, what now? Because, and please ffs don’t anyone take this as a pro BJ comment, I think there actually could be someone worse. And that someone is: the Gove creature.

My worry right there.
though I can't say I forgive Savage Jabbit, but he at least has said words about lockdown being a mistake?

i think Rishi will decide to stand down from politics generally.

Perime · 05/07/2022 19:06

If he makes Nadine Dorries Chancellor then Confused

Runnerbeansflower · 05/07/2022 19:06

As I said to @SarahShorty I am willing to be corrected 😆

Provenceinthesummer · 05/07/2022 19:06

Firstly Boris can call an election whenever he wants to, and the MPs know that.

Secondly it’s not obvious who will be leader of the Labour Party by then of Starmer has to resign

I am not sure a leadership contest can happen now as Boris won the confidence vote.
