This is a thread for chit chat, banter, memes and emojis about current politics.

It is NOT intended as a fight club.

It is NOT intended as a place to rehash old arguments about the merits (or otherwise) of Brexit - please pop over to the Brexit forum for that.

Politics threads sometimes attract posters who make personal attacks or who hold their views so very strongly that they find it hard to be respectful of other opinions. Please do not engage with such posters; MN has a handy report button for any posts that fall outside their posting guidelines.

Now, pull up a bar stool, and I'm sure one of our lovely staff will be over with a menu shortly.

No Scary, I am not saying it is ok for Biden to act corruptly. Of course it is not.
But I don't think the way to investigate it is with the POTUS making that phone call. He should be investigated thoroughly by the appropriate agencies. Just as Trump was.
Saying that Trump was wrong to link aid to his political aims, which is what appears to have happened, does not make Biden right.
As it has turned out, because of that phone call Biden has walked away unblemished, or nearly so.

If they had all just followed the proper procedures it may, just may, have worked out.
Now, we will never really know what Biden did or did not do.

Singing, please just leave the scones out, with butter, cream and jam for people to help themselves.
Or you be accused of being partisan and banned by MNHQ.

Dapplegrey · 05/02/2020 16:24

Why was my post deleted?

XingMing · 05/02/2020 16:51

I would dearly like to see Pete Buttegieg win the Democratic nominations, just because he's younger than all the others... who are mostly in their 70s!

MarySidney · 05/02/2020 16:57

I'd like to see Frank Field getting a peerage too, in recognition of his long and principled service to Parliament and his constituency, and because I think he'd be an asset to the HoL.

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 17:04

Yes, Frank Field too. He's an honourable man.

It's a mystery, Dapple, but best not to dwell. That's why I made you a cheery cup of coffee.

Heaven forfend that I get dragged into the cream/jam dispute, Copper. That really would be like skating on thin ice. Smile
I'll take your advice.

Help yourselves to scones...

Busy 24 hours in real life so catching up now on the political news. Not a good 24 hours for Boris or Trump but well done to Nancy for her actions. Boris and Trump are very alike although Boris more intelligent. They both are poor speakers or when questioned. They both use catch phrases and sound bites without any real content. Will be interesting to see what happens to both of them over the coming weeks.

SilverySurfer · 05/02/2020 17:49

I second or third Kate Hoey for the HoL. She was Under Secretary of State when I worked at the Home Office. She was lovely. Used to come to the staff restaurant for lunch and chat with us. I'm a Tory but sorry she's no longer an MP, I would have thought Labour were pretty desperately in need of people like her.

Have I missed something? What makes it a 'not good' day for Boris?

I've just come in and it's cold so would appreciate a hot chocolate (no shooshy cream or marshmallows thanks) and a scone - butter and jam only thanks.

Accurate summary from The Guardian of today’s PMQ’s

People's PMQs - Snap verdict

Boris Johnson has many faults, but he is not stupid. He is also an accomplished performer who, like most good performers, can tell when he is losing his audience. By the end of this session he looked like someone finding it increasingly hard to pretend that what he was doing was anything other than utterly pointless.

And he was right; it was.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 05/02/2020 18:11

Did anyone see Bercow on Sky news last night? They played him a clip of Leakey accusing him of being a bully. His was about to explode he was sooo furious, the face of a bully. Would not like to have him as a Boss, grumpy dwarf Napoleon Complex.

He couldn't control his temper on live TV imagine what he must have been like in Private. I remember the insane abuse he screamed at Mr Goves using the actual schools name his children went to.

time4chocolate · 05/02/2020 18:12

Just catching up myself.

Not a good 24 hours for Boris or Trump but well done to Nancy for her actions

The other similarity here Parker is that Boris & Trump really don’t need to open their mouths, the opposition hand success to them on a plate.

Accurate summary from The Guardian of today’s PMQ’s

Anything a little more balanced Parker? 😉

Parker231 · 05/02/2020 18:17

I thought it was an accurate summary hence the reason I posted it. I find The Guardian provides better summaries of what has happened than other news organisations. Good way of keeping up to date real time.

time4chocolate · 05/02/2020 18:21

Fair enough Parker 👍

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 18:30

Labour really don't need any more people like Hoey in the party who vote for Tory policies and buddy up with dregs like Farage. They've got enough to do as it is!

I do love her on this clip from Andrew Neil show though -
AN - 'can you name any reputable independent study that shows us better off if we leave?'
KH - 'Probably not better off, as such'
AN - 'Or even one that says we'll be the same'
KH - 'with the greatest respect I think we're discussing this in the wrong way..'

SilverySurfer · 05/02/2020 18:32

Sorry for laughing but what else would you expect the
Gruniad to say? How brilliantly the PM did today? It's not going to happen, is it. I watched most of QT and thought Boris handled it well - what did I miss in the last five minutes that warranted the comment of not a good 24 hours for him?

I agree Bercow has a Napoleon complex Walking I think he is a very unpleasant individual.

howabout · 05/02/2020 18:52

Parker is quoting the Guardian's verdict on Peoples' PMQs not HoC PMQs which they actually grudgingly assessed as a win for Boris.

Problem with Peoples' PMQs was his aids had not provided enough questions as he was being uncharacteristically succinct. He really needed a journo in front of him to keep obtusely not understanding the answer and talking over him to fill out the time.

SilverySurfer · 05/02/2020 19:14

This is so funny even if I, as a Tory, say something nice about a Labour person I'm still wrong Grin

Meanwhile people like Diane Abbott continue, regardless of fuck ups.
Who in an LBC interview gave a total figure for extra police which would have resulted in them being paid 30 pence a year? Who criticised fellow Labour colleagues for sending their children to public schools and then sent her child to a £10,000 a year school saying "West Indian mums will go to the wall for their children." Oh, that's ok then. She attacked Harriet Harman for sending her child to a grammar school saying it looks as if we do one thing and say another". Yet she's still Shadow Home Secretary - you couldn't make it up.

I haven't seen the People's QT will see if I can find it.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 05/02/2020 19:18

Was a nice offer by Boris towards David to take over the COP 26 job. I think it would have been right up his wheel house. Shame he said no.

Another waste of time PMQs for Corbyn, why wont Labour put in an interim leader until they can elect a permanent one.

Boris was confident and statesmanlike as seems to be usual now.

Guess who was banging on about handing back control to the EU?

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 19:24

Chris Grayling anyone? I expect DA will be on her way once the leadership is settled.

This is so funny even if I, as a Tory, say something nice about a Labour person I'm still wrong

Kate Hoey isn't a Labour person

SilverySurfer · 05/02/2020 19:31

War criminal Tony Blair was PM during Kate Hoey's time at the Home Office, she was Labour MP for Vauxhall. Ipso facto, she is Labour.

Parker231 · 05/02/2020 19:33

I don’t want Boris to be statemanslike - not even sure I know what that is. I need to know what his plans are for Brexit so I can plan our lives. Saying an Australian style agreement is stupid when no such type of trade deal exists.

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 19:39

She's ex labour, so ipso facto she isn't labour.

And she voted for the Iraq War so as she's also culpable.

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 19:54

Agree with Frank Field as well Mary and Singing. I have a great respect for him.

Singing In that picture, is that whipped cream and not clotted? I can send you some proper Cornish if you'd like.

BaileysforBreakfast · 05/02/2020 20:01

I agree with you about Kate Hoey, Arse. What is there to like about this mediocre, pro-hunting woman who couldn't even answer a simple question about the benefits of leaving the EU and was known for Tweeting the occasional dog-whistle? She also consistently voted against the wishes of her constituents (held to be a cardinal sin by Brexit supporters on MN in the past) who were 78% remain.

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 20:12

Yeah she's very big on hunting and shooting Baileys isn't she, and apparently voted against bringing in tighter gun control after the Dunblane murders
