This is a thread for chit chat, banter, memes and emojis about current politics.

It is NOT intended as a fight club.

It is NOT intended as a place to rehash old arguments about the merits (or otherwise) of Brexit - please pop over to the Brexit forum for that.

Politics threads sometimes attract posters who make personal attacks or who hold their views so very strongly that they find it hard to be respectful of other opinions. Please do not engage with such posters; MN has a handy report button for any posts that fall outside their posting guidelines.

Now, pull up a bar stool, and I'm sure one of our lovely staff will be over with a menu shortly.

I think having a quiet pub is a good idea
Hides eyes in shame as I know I have caused trouble in the pub in the past

That's very honest mummy2017 good for you Smile

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 14:35

I'm not sure if he needed to impeached or not. I wasn't sure if he hit the bar for high crimes and misdeameanors. Aid of most kinds normally comes with a quid pro quo, and indeed Obama withheld military aid to Egypt at one point...2013 I think.

The Obama administration withheld aid to Egypt in protest at the removal of the democratically elected Morsi. Trump tried to get Ukraine to do the dirty on his opponent for his own political gain.

Can you see the difference scaryteacher?

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 14:41

I see that Daniel Janner has formally objected to Tom Watson's nomination for a peerage.

More encouragingly, Gisela Stuart has apparently been nominated. I have great respect for her and think she would be a fine addition to the HoL.

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 14:47

I'm not surprised Daniel Janner has objected. I should think that Harvey Proctor and Lord Brammall's family would have something to say as well; also Lady Brittan.

I hope Gisela Stuart gets in; I have a lot of time for her.

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 14:51

I think she's terrific, Scary. She did so much to put forward the calm pragmatic case for Leave and she kept the political temperature down. Such a knowledgeable woman.

Re your previous post, I genuinely thought David Leakey has his K. What a shame he hasn't. Mr Bercow isn't fit to tie his shoelaces. Smile

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 14:58

Both Watson and Stuart are dreadful and completely unworthy of a peerage - most of those nominated are. The whole system of peerages is so bent, it desperately needs reform but I bet the reforming zeal of the current Gov stops short of the upper chamber

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 15:09

I see David Cameron's protection officer has been suspended for leaving their gun in the loo on a scheduled British Airways flight.

From memory, that's gross misconduct in which "trust between the Service and member of staff has completely broken down" (the wording might be different now but the principle will be the same) and it allows for dismissal.

I've no doubt the officer concerned was invited for an "interview without coffee"?

Speaking of coffee, I'm getting one for Dapple and myself. Does anyone else want one?

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 15:12

It's interesting Singing to see her euroscepticism was born when she was involved in the process of drawing up the new constitution for the EU. Evidently, exposure to what was coming converted her. I'd like to see Kate Hoey ennobled as well; she is another one with her head screwed on.

Any chance of a tea please?

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 15:16

Here you go, Scary ☕️

And a definite yes to Kate Hoey. She is a star. I'd go so far as to say that had she been my MP - Labour or not - I would seriously have considered voting for her. I read an interview with her when she was asked if Jezza would have voted to stay in the EU and she howled with laughter. "Absolutely not", she said, "I've walked through the lobby with him too many times. Next question?"

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 15:20

Yes, Kate Hoey and Gisela Stuart might have made me think about voting Labour, same as John Smith did. If Dan Jarvis were to become leader and shake it up again, possibly, but not with the current crowd.

Tx for the tea, just how I like it. Need to gird my loins before cleaning the bathroom and loos. Not my favourite job.

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 15:22

when she was asked if Jezza would have voted to stay in the EU and she howled with laughter. "Absolutely not"

Which is presumably why he tried to take a neutral stance on Brexit

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 15:22

Singing Wouldn't let Bercow near Leakey's shoes; he might spoil the hours of work in polishing them correctly.

Coppersulphate · 05/02/2020 15:26

Definite yes here to Gisela Stuart and Kate Hoey. Both intelligent, knowledgeable women.
And Tom Watson, ....as you rightly say, there would be too many objections from people he damaged.
The government has many tricky issues to deal with. It is unlikely to go looking for more.

Singing, I know you are busy, but is there any tea left in the pot?

I can't see why aid should not be tied to the interests of the donating country...in some way.
But Trump was out of order because he wanted it stopped for his own political reasons. But impeachment was never going to succeed.
And Pelosi has diminished herself by her actions with his speech. It will be remembered and held against the Democrats. Trump will claim to be the victim.

Coppersulphate · 05/02/2020 15:31

I always thought Hilary Benn would have made a good leader of Labour but I went off him when he brought the "surrender" bill.

In days gone by I was an active member of my CLP and the infighting there made the fights with the Tories look like playground squabbles. I suspect they are as bad now and the party needs a leader who can bring all members together. They need to solve their internal issues before starting to win back voters.
They will never win me back. I am very happy in the Conservative party.

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 15:32

☕️Copper

I think Donald Trump behaved poorly but Nancy Pelosi had 75 minutes to calm down before she ripped up the copy of his address. All she did was lower herself to his level and made it even-stevens. I'm quite disappointed.

MrsSnippyPants · 05/02/2020 15:35

I have been threatened with a ban for asking Emily T a question on her webchat. It didn't actually break the special webchat guidelines, but there you go, yet another Labour leadership candidate is allowed to dodge the difficult questions.
She was coming across quite well on some issues until then.
I really fail to see how Labour have any chance of winning an election in the next 10 years.
Politicians of the calibre of Hoey, Stuart, and indeed John Smith scary are nowhere to be seen at the moment.
I think tea and scones would go down well right now, I'll set the table.

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 15:38

Copper So it's fine for Trump to be investigated for possible Russian links ( and one would have thought a very thorough and deep security clearance would have been done before he became POTUS), but not Biden and family for equally dodgy links to Ukraine, which is more corrupt than a corrupt thing?

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 15:39

You must have an incredible sense of smell, MrsSnippy. I've just taken a batch of scones out of the oven.

Oh dear, did ET not like your question? Politics is a robust game...

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 15:58

Is there clotted cream?

howabout · 05/02/2020 16:00

We are all Mayor Pete fans in our house - for all sorts of shallow reasons rather than any sort of political analysis. If his showing in Iowa has follow through then the Bidens are yesterday's news anyway. The Democrats surely must realise that a fresh face is the best option to prevent a rerun of the "drain the swamp" narrative?

MrsSnippyPants · 05/02/2020 16:12

Oh Singing the only thing better than a scone is a warm scone!

Of course scary but we shall draw a veil over cream or jam first as we don't want to be goady do we?

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 16:14

Butter first, then jam, then cream. Not goady, just Cornish!!
