This is a thread for chit chat, banter, memes and emojis about current politics.

It is NOT intended as a fight club.

It is NOT intended as a place to rehash old arguments about the merits (or otherwise) of Brexit - please pop over to the Brexit forum for that.

Politics threads sometimes attract posters who make personal attacks or who hold their views so very strongly that they find it hard to be respectful of other opinions. Please do not engage with such posters; MN has a handy report button for any posts that fall outside their posting guidelines.

Now, pull up a bar stool, and I'm sure one of our lovely staff will be over with a menu shortly.

MNHQ have played into the hands of the left wing pro EU mob
It is a sad day when ordinary mums who are supporting MN are no longer welcome Clearly they do not value us

Well that sort of stuff isn't helpful for a start, is it? FWIW I note that the highly personal stuff aimed at me last night is still standing so it just goes to show..

I don't think there's any big mystery about how to post in the guidelines on the whole - if you find you don't like someone's comments and you feel personal irritation towards them - ignore it, don't start doing all the passive-aggressive emojis/memes/codewords that have been a feature of every single Arms thread i've seen

I am so glad to see you back, bruised but not defeated, Dusty. You were never goady. You were a great LL
And I am delighted to see you back Singing. I loved you Westminster round ups each morning.

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 10:16

What happened to "you go low, we go high"

It's not working. Any more than it will work in opposition to the shower of shit currently installed at Downing St.

However loathsome they might be Trump and Cummings methods have proved successful. People who want them out can't afford just to sit around taking a high moral stance on it all, they're going to have to show their outrage and do their outrage.

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 10:19

Morning Copper Dusty and Lily. I see Diane Abbot has opened her mouth to change feet on Bercow's bullying.

howabout · 05/02/2020 10:26

Morning all Brew
The Bercow story is an interesting litmus test for the BBC. It was Newsnight who first broke the allegations years ago.

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 10:26

Yes, Diane Abbot only has to open her mouth for pp to start jumping on her, I wonder why that is?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 05/02/2020 10:27

I am not sure if it is against current guide lines and it might get me banned to say so but... apparently something somewhere is happening today and someone somewhere is commenting on it. I might or might not agree with them but I dont know if I can comment further.

Hopefully no one takes that personally. Apologies.

BaileysforBreakfast · 05/02/2020 10:31

Whatever you think of the man, you respect the Office.
That should start with the man holding the Office.

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 10:34

Yes, all very interesting that Diane Abbott is the first MP pp here have highlighted today and not, for instance, Daniel Kawczynski . Posters were full of righteous anger about anti-semitism while Corbyn was still a contender, seems to have gone out of fashion here now?

BaileysforBreakfast · 05/02/2020 10:37

Reading the BBC report of the State of the Nation speech, it seems the whole event was conducted in rather a bizarre way. I'm not defending Pelosi's gesture at all, but it looks like there was plenty of GF going on there.
Aren't Leaders meant to be better than the people they represent?

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 10:39

Howabout For Leakey to speak up again (he was on the Today programme this morning) is interesting. It's not the first time either. Good on him for supporting those that were too afraid to speak out. He has nothing to prove to anyone, especially Bercow. Leakey has had some big jobs as well, especially the one prior to Black Rod. Even more herding cats than the Commons.

BaileysforBreakfast · 05/02/2020 10:41

She signed off on his impeachment and was in the forefront of the charge for it to happen as well iirc. I wouldn't have shaken her hand either.
Someone had to sign it off. Do you think he should not have been impeached? Should Trump just be allowed to get away with anything? Should the scandal not have been investigated?

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 10:55

I'm not sure if he needed to impeached or not. I wasn't sure if he hit the bar for high crimes and misdeameanors. Aid of most kinds normally comes with a quid pro quo, and indeed Obama withheld military aid to Egypt at one point...2013 I think.

SilverySurfer · 05/02/2020 10:58

It's good that Leakey has spoken up. Interesting that Abbot has deleted her tweet saying it's unlikely he was bullied. Says all you need to know.

DustyDiamond · 05/02/2020 11:07

Trump didn't shake Pence's hand either btw 🤷🏻‍♀️

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 11:13

I think she was told she was wrong Silvery. There's a difference between being bullied and standing up in a position of power to support those you can see are being bullied. He was doing the latter. As Lt-Gen Leakey has said, he's had worse from a Sgt Major when a junior officer, than from Bercow. After all, apart from an unpleasant working environment (and I don't suppose Bosnia was a picnic) what could Bercow actually do to Leakey?

MarySidney · 05/02/2020 11:15

Whatever you think of the man, you respect the Office.
That should start with the man holding the Office.

Scary will know better than I do, but I believe the convention is that you salute the uniform, not the man wearing it.

howabout · 05/02/2020 11:18

The problem for the Democrats with the Trump Pantomime is that the Senate will not convict him this evening. Rightly or wrongly Pelosi will be remembered for tearing up a speech and refusing to shake hands before Trump is effectively "cleared".

HateIsNotGood · 05/02/2020 11:19

Morning all - fire sorted for the day - glad to see things are back in order today, hopefully back later.

mummmy2017 · 05/02/2020 11:24

I think having a quiet pub is a good idea.
Hides eyes in shame as I know I have caused trouble in the pub in the past.

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 11:51

There's a difference between being bullied and standing up in a position of power to support those you can see are being bullied.

That's my take, Scary. Sir David Leakey has no personal or political stake in making this stand, other than being true to his principles and providing visible support to those he considers were bullied.

Contrast and compare with Margaret Beckett's response when MPs called for Mr Bercow to resign following Dame Laura Cox's damning report.

"Asked if she was condoning the behaviour, the former foreign secretary told the BBC's PM programme: “Alright, yes. I will answer your question bluntly and directly.^ Abuse is terrible, it shouldn't happen, it should be stopped, behaviour should change anyway - whether the speaker goes or not.^ But yes, if it comes to it, the constitutional future of this country - the most difficult decision we’ve made not just since the war but... possibly for hundreds of years - yes, it trumps bad behaviour.”

So that's all right then. Be as obnoxious as you like, as long as you are on the "right" side.

It's a terrible message to send out. And it contributed to the chaos in the HoC and the division in the country.

Sir David Leakey is a beacon of honour.

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 12:08

Singing Lt-Gen Leakey never got his K afaik. Nice bloke, very suave and charming, and was one of dh's referees for his last job!

Leakey was DG EUMS when dh was seconded there.

I believe Leakey implicitly.

Coppersulphate · 05/02/2020 12:14

Regardless of who is POTUS, you should always respect the Office. No matter how bad the behaviour of others, you respect the Office.
And, no, I don't think Trump should have been impeached. I think it was a waste of American tax payers money, there was absolutely no chance of it being successful because of the Republicans in the Senate, and it distracted from other policies.
And it gave Trump the opportunity to claim he was being victimised.
Bad politics.
I think he will be re-elected.
And I despise the man for a whole variety of reasons.
But that is no reason to try and impeach him.

And I notice there is a lot of pictures on twitter of Diane A falling asleep on the Opposition front bench yesterday. She just could not stay awake.
There is definitely something going on there, but I do not know what.

Is the reshuffle today?

I hope they deal with Bercow. The Speaker is the person that everyone sees when the Commons is televised and if the Speaker can get away with bullying then it gives the impression of open house.
Again, it is the Office. If you hold that Office you respect it.
And Leakey is clearly a highly respected and honourable man

Coppersulphate · 05/02/2020 12:16

I thought he had his K.
He should be elevated to the HoL.

Coppersulphate · 05/02/2020 12:22

Both Lord Lisvane and David Leakey have complained so I hope something is done.
I can't see him getting a peerage. If it was granted there would be accusations, and rightly so, of rewarding bullies.
Abbott has deleted her tweet but here it is courtesy of the BBC (that bastion of left wing bias)
