This is a thread for chit chat, banter, memes and emojis about current politics.

It is NOT intended as a fight club.

It is NOT intended as a place to rehash old arguments about the merits (or otherwise) of Brexit - please pop over to the Brexit forum for that.

Politics threads sometimes attract posters who make personal attacks or who hold their views so very strongly that they find it hard to be respectful of other opinions. Please do not engage with such posters; MN has a handy report button for any posts that fall outside their posting guidelines.

Now, pull up a bar stool, and I'm sure one of our lovely staff will be over with a menu shortly.

Yes, I know that Parker, but thanks for the little 'tip' anyway - how kind of you - but, really, I'm not sure I need your 'advice'.

Parker231 · 06/02/2020 20:29

Wasn’t intended as advice - a fact the UK are still paying in, getting the benefits but no say.

scaryteacher · 06/02/2020 20:32

I read somewhere Hate that some member states want a budget less the UK contribution, and minus another 3% on top of that. They have to have it all sorted soon or the Commission can impose a budget, as nearly happened when Prodi took over from Santer in 99 (iirc).

Xingming · 06/02/2020 20:38

Cream first, then jam... never butter. And no red coat for hunting, unless you're a hunt servant. Ordinary members wear regular formal widing clothes. Hacking jacket, jodphurs, boots and a shirt with a stock.

It will be very interesting to read next year's budget, when the remaining 26 nations have to decide where to economise.

And there's next week's reshuffle to look forward to... who's going up/down or in/out?

And the retirement peerages? Definitely one for Ken Clark who put the economy on the right track for Tony Blair. Less certain about giving one to gloomy Philip Hammond.

Xingming · 06/02/2020 20:39

Err... riding clothes, but some participants are unfeasibly wide. Pity their steeds.

scaryteacher · 06/02/2020 20:42

That's Devon Xing, jam on top! I must admit to just being happy with a pot of Roddas and a spoon, no need for a scone or jam.

How about a peerage for Dom Cummings?

HateIsNotGood · 06/02/2020 20:49

It's going to be difficult for the EU, they've got to find a way of keeping to their 'aspirations' but with a lot less money, unless the West (and maybe Poland) stumps up more. I am in no way feeling 'gloaty' about this - if only they could have been more flexible and responsive and not held the UK to the Treaties signed by Blair and Major and allowed for some differentiation, Brexit might not have happened.

Overall, I'm glad it did. There was talk of Population Growth here a day or two ago - very, very few countries worldwide have total population declines; except the Eastern EU Countries do - quite massive ones, mostly the working-aged and able - a bit of a disaster really for those Countries.

And thanks for your other little 'tip' Parker - I knew that too as it's quite common knowledge. Is there something that you want to say - it's ok too 'spill it' here - we've flagstone floors and they're really easy to clean.

Arseaboutdarkly · 06/02/2020 21:35

Raab LookALike Competition - already discussed in the Arms and considered to look like Rik Mayall, most often in his Brittas Role

Rik Mayall wasn't in Brittas. You mean Chris Barrie, also of Red Dwarf. And he's not nearly Raaaaab.

Arseaboutdarkly · 06/02/2020 21:38

Tell me the difference between this Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaab

Politics Arms
Wesavedsallysally · 06/02/2020 21:39

Yes dominc Cummings for hol.
But he probably wouldn't accept it.

Farage must be awarded some accolade as well. Love him, loathe him, whatever he's been an extraordinary politician, and has devoted his life to getting us out of the eu, in spite of astonishing hate.

Did boris go to far with the Jimmy cranky comments? I know she's got other things to be pre occupied with but really!

Re scones I'm not fussy but visually I prefer cream first then jam.

Arseaboutdarkly · 06/02/2020 21:39

and this Raaaaaaaaaaab

Politics Arms
AutumnRose1 · 06/02/2020 21:42

But there’s only one Raaaaaaaab

Wesavedsallysally · 06/02/2020 21:42

He's not my cup of tea arse but.... I did greatly warm to him after seeing him on amarr this Sunday...

He does have a beautiful face. He also has a sense of control and sensible presence about him Grin

AutumnRose1 · 06/02/2020 21:43

Cream before jam

HateIsNotGood · 06/02/2020 21:46

Happily corrected Arse - not Brittas, but Raab is very Rik Mayall.

Any views on the provision of THC/CBD on NHS prescription to Epileptic Children? I completely understand if this is another vulnerable sector of our society that you might know nothing about so might have no opinion about - so don't feel that you need to have an opinion - it was 'yesterday's' news after all - just not for those very sick children and their families who live it every single day.

But I do understand if these things aren't within your 'sphere' and that your 'sensibilities' and feelings are the main thing we should be concerned with.

Arseaboutdarkly · 06/02/2020 21:58

He does have a beautiful face. He also has a sense of control and sensible presence about him

Are we still talking about Raaaaaab? Confused

Arseaboutdarkly · 06/02/2020 22:00

I like a cheese scone meself - Morrisons do a pack of 4 for less than a pound!

AutumnRose1 · 06/02/2020 22:02

I quite like cheese scones but now I just hear Miranda saying “a savoury muffin” in a tone of horror.

Speaking of horror.....that SNP guy, jeez.

The Jimmy Krankie comments were exactly what I’d like less of. Kinder, gentler politics please!

Arseaboutdarkly · 06/02/2020 22:06

Yes Autumn the Derek Mackay thing is just so gobsmackingly shocking

It's always amazing how successful people, clearly on their way to the top, will find ways to completely trash themselves (and their families sadly) by their weaknesses. It's so horribly fascinating

Savoury muffin my Arse! Grin

AutumnRose1 · 06/02/2020 22:10

Arse - there must be a name for this phenomenon?

Then again, I suppose there’s a range of thiughts...

I’m so powerful I’ll get away with it

I enjoy running the risk

I actively want to be removed from office and to be irredeemable

Then again, that last one is having the bar set higher and higher.

HateIsNotGood · 06/02/2020 22:14

But besides butter - what else goes well on a cheese scone?
Genuine question.

Arseaboutdarkly · 06/02/2020 22:20

Must be. Probably a whole load of psychology studies on it. I guess it's a combination of the things in your list?

Although the bar is a lot higher it's reassuring to see that what he did is still considered totally indefensible by everyone - no one is trying to defend it and he's immediately shoved off.

scaryteacher · 06/02/2020 22:29

Autumn gavel away, but on this side of the Tamar, you won't get many takers. Jam first, then cream.

HateIsNotGood · 06/02/2020 22:37

Careful folks - all this talk of Cream Teas and we might be infringing the licensing Rules - we could wake up tomorrow and find MN have moved The Arms to Food/Recipes Grin.

scaryteacher · 06/02/2020 22:46

It's a dividing line down here Hate and can be quite polarising whether you are jam or cream first. I went right off Mary Berry when she did cream first.

She (despite her horrid scone habits) should be made a Dame or get a peerage. She has experience in small businesses, publishing, the media, losing a child..she could bring a lot to the Lords.
