I'm just appalled by his comments on the Burka. In my opinion there's no barrel he won't scrape to get backing from sections of the British population to be leader of the Tory party. Really is Boris reflecting Brits opinions or just a nasty potty mouth racist? I'm curious to get the opinion of the good women of MN

Did a debate NEED to be provoked? Was he really the right person to provoke the debate?

No, you’re right ragged. At this point it’s not the debate to have but, free speech and all that.

I’d like to hear from a woman on one of these threads who wears a full face veil. Or on tv.
I think that would be a nice discussion and debate.
Rather than lots of people who don’t dress in this way talk about it. I really think this would be the way forward to help with understanding on both sides.

And the point everyone was not that Nuns are fine being called penguins. It’s the playground nature of the comments Boris made. I think he hides nasty racism behind a jokey demeanour.

He can crawl into a hole. He's a vile, vile man.

Wasn’t there some one up thread?

I haven't RTFT, sorry.

I think he's an ego-driven, nasty but clever ultra right winger who is taking a leaf from Trump's book in order to climb to the top.

Hear hear mrsramsayscat. All the Kippers will definitely vote for him.

Well god ( any god) help us if he becomes PM.
I would defend his right to say he doesn’t like the burka. It’s just that I suspect he has found an “acceptable” way to be a racist by using the letterbox jibe. As I said, that’s not a debating point. It’s just a silly insult that will resonate with a lot of racists.
I don’t much like the burka. I think it should probably bar you from some professions and situations and, in practice, it does. I can understand the right to choose whatever we want to wear but in my experience ( worked as nurse practitioner at a surgery with a high Arabic population) women who wear it seem subjected by their community to some very alien cultural beliefs which I don’t share.
It’s a tricky debate but silly comments like that don’t help.
