I'm just appalled by his comments on the Burka. In my opinion there's no barrel he won't scrape to get backing from sections of the British population to be leader of the Tory party. Really is Boris reflecting Brits opinions or just a nasty potty mouth racist? I'm curious to get the opinion of the good women of MN

OP posts:
Rumboogie · 07/08/2018 23:24

Born here or not, the burqua has no place in western society.

BJ is indeed self serving, however the OP's question was first about his comment, and second, by implication, his motives. These are two separate matters.

ASliceOfArcticRoll · 07/08/2018 23:24

It's quite unusually smart of him, I think, possibly, in that he has managed to get people frothing whilst NOT actually proposing to change anything. It makes his opponents look a bit unreasonable in that (frenetic with the slight whiff of a witch hunt) politically correct way so that the more general observer may wonder when it became impossible to hold an opinion.

For others it may just reinforce the blundering image.

My head hurts just thinking about it. So I'm going to forget the numpty.

clearingaspaceforthecat · 07/08/2018 23:27

He has purposely picked an 'easy target'.
Lots of people may struggle with the concept of the burka, but it is a complex issue.
But what he knowingly has done is add fuel to and legitimise prejudicial views of people seeking a simple solution.
It is essential to ask why has he done this rather than debate 'Burkas - yes or no?'

Scotgirl80 · 07/08/2018 23:28

seriously why can’t a woman just decide what she wants to wear? Everyone is so judgemental about women being forced to wear the burka in places like Saudi but here we are telling women they can’t wear it. Why not just let women decide what they want to wear?!? It annoys me this whole argument about it being oppressive, ok it may if they are being fourced to wear it but arent people who are against it oppressing women by forcing them to dress a certain way, in the way they think is acceptable?

Scotgirl80 · 07/08/2018 23:30

Just for the record, I’m not a fan of the burqa either but I feel like women can dress how they like

AutumnGrace · 07/08/2018 23:36

Boris is an embarrassment and a calculative bully. He picks an easy target to be topical, pathetic really!

Personally I find it hard to relate to women who cover up by choice and sad for those forced into it however it's their right and their expression to choose what to wear.

Apileofballyhoo · 07/08/2018 23:39

Speaking of Saudi, I wonder what the arms buyers make of their culture being mocked...

powershowerforanhour · 07/08/2018 23:42

I read that another MP described him as a "pound shop Donald Trump" which I think is apt. I reckon there's a big streak of nasty under the bouffant hair and the wiff waff.
Boris wants power.
Boris cares about Boris, not the good of the country.
I hope he makes his move for the top job, falls on his face and is kicked to the kerb.

Just out of interest, as a thought experiment, how far do you think Boris would have got if he was the exact same only female? If it was Doris, not Boris, dangling her chubby self on a zipline over London with platinum hair flapping in the breeze, and saying the things that he has said? Would she be viewed as a character, and "bit buffoonish but actually really intelligent" Or just an embarrassment and never put forward as a candidate for running a jumble sale let alone a politician?

hayli · 07/08/2018 23:43

Oh please to all those pp who are, stop talking about how this isnt acceptable in a civilised & liberal society🙄 just goes completely against that. each to their own. And every woman is somehow wearing it to please some man?!!!! hhaaha Dream fucking on.
Funny how a muslim woman can be degraded by a politician in that way but a woman dressed wirh barley anything nowadays cant be called a slut by them?! Sorry but it works both ways.
You want a liberal society then let EVERY individual dress as they please be it in a metal tank box or strips of thread so long as they are within the law.

Poppyinagreenfield · 07/08/2018 23:44

I remember free speech.

This is taking feminism right back to before from where it came from.

Imagine this the other way round. Boris asking that all women cover their faces and dressing more conservatively so as not to tempt men. That would presumably be totally acceptable to the commentators on this thread.

Downtrodden women come in many guises but the cause is always the same. Men.

hayli · 07/08/2018 23:45

Ps im not twlking for those women who are forced to wear it in other countries but the uk is very far from that and its here that im writing about

ManeNachger · 07/08/2018 23:46

Oh stop dictating what you want women to wear. Let them wear veils if they want, they might not like your ugly clothes either!

Freedom is not Dictatorship!

MistressDeeCee · 07/08/2018 23:49

Exactly hayli

The hypocrisy is rife

llangennith · 07/08/2018 23:52

I thought it was funny. I'm against burkas.

Timefortea99 · 08/08/2018 00:00

I agree with him, but I also agree that he said it as a self-serving method of appealing to a certain voter. He didn’t say it because he thinks that it is an oppressive garment forced upon women by men and their religion like I do. He said it to highlight that he was ready to play a controversial card a la Trump. I would never vote for him. I cannot abide him. He will say and do anything for power, he will stab anybody in the back. I read somewhere there were no longer any old Etonians in the cabinet. Long may that last.

Cobblersandhogwash · 08/08/2018 00:04

Boris Johnson couldn't care less about the niqab/burka etc.

Boris Johnson only wants to make headlines and appeal to a certain segment of society.

Boris Johnson is angling for Tory leadership.

jaynelovesagathachristie · 08/08/2018 00:07

A lot of women choose to wear it. Just because some of you find it sinister doesn't mean a public figure should go spouting off this shit.

Rebecca36 · 08/08/2018 00:27

How anyone could possibly take that buffoon seriously I don't know. He's an embarrassment. Except Mr Trump of course, he is great friends with Boris.

Flowerfae · 08/08/2018 00:55

DS a few years ago, shouted 'letterbox' when we were in our car in a queue waiting to go into a shopping area (there was a group of ladies in burkas) he has autism and learning difficulties, he'd never seen a lady in a burka before. I didn't even notice them though until I started looking around to see what he was on about (because he doesn't talk that much and that seemed a very strange thing for him to shout). Unfortunately, his window was open a bit. Its one thing for a child with special needs (who did get corrected) to say it, and a grown man in politics though. But I don't think anyone takes Boris seriously, do they?

MrsKiplin · 08/08/2018 05:48

There was no need for Boris to comment on this. He does it for attention because he sees it works for Trump.

WhirlwindHugs · 08/08/2018 06:38

Being a blatantly racist 'oaf' with a newspaper column got him to home secretary, and he wants prime minister and is perfectly happy to do it the Trump way. He is our Trump! Complete with dodgy dealings with public money like the garden Bridge

Would you be happy about Trump in charge??

We have to stop him now or he will end up in fucking charge.

Yes, his comments were clearly racist. Criticising the sexism of a burqa is not done by taking the piss out of people who wear them.

Taking the piss out of people who wear burqas is done by racist shits who don't care that arseholes will now be more tempted to abuse women in the streets and rip their clothing off.

Which does happen.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 08/08/2018 07:10

How many people from the UK who go out to work in Dubai or Saudi or elsewhere abide by their culture?
Respecting their religion and laws?
We’re such hypocrites.

MistressDeeCee · 08/08/2018 07:37

Power that's food for thought

She'd be labelled hysterical (that word reserved for women...) nut job. Ridicule cranked up if she's aged over 35 and not a slim chick with long platinum hair flowing . She'd be laughed out of the game.

Boris is an idiotic poor man's Trump but he will appeal to those in society who can't see past cheap emotive newspaper headlines, and stunts by the self-serving. If they think he gives a shit about the working classes, they are deluded.

He will do what he needs to, to get the forelock tuggers to vote for him and continuing to live in the lap of luxury whilst they have palpitations about the brown people next door

If women are forced to abandon the Burka, I'm at a loss to understand what they think they'll have won. They may claim these women are suffering sexist bullying, but they are happy to implement the same bullying themselves in the "western way" which after all is the best and only way, isn't it?

What are they going to do about women who actually want to wear the Burka/veil - force them to display themselves to society too?

I see Theresa May has backed calls for Boris to apologise. But I take her even less seriously since as a grown woman and PM, she allows herself to be dragged around by the hand by Trump. Portraying the meek little woman who must be male-led image for all the world to see

You don't see other female government leaders allowing this as they have the dignity, sense and pride that she lacks.

I shouldn't think Boris could care less what she has to say, for him it'll be akin to being mailed by a mouse especially as there's a good chance he'd actually secure her job

As long as the women are not driving, it must restrict their vision surely?
