More on the meaning of Trump, the Trumpsters and Trumpism

Putin would do well to bear in mind the adage "be careful what you wish for, you might just get it". Never has a Russian misstep meant a higher likelihood of a global war than now.

Spinflight · 28/11/2016 19:59

"I don't think the effects of globalistion can be undone. "

You are very wrong. Simple tarifs can make foreign factories uneconomic overnight. Quotas too. Tax rules for tnc's another powerful weapon.

With global starting to decline it will make increasing sense to produce domestically and with faster modern construction and manufacturing do it more efficiently.

Alyosha · 28/11/2016 20:01

kaija - the "establishment" is anyone with a university education who is centre-left or centre-right in their views.

Hence Corbyn & Farage are both non establishment, despite their years and years as professional politicians and their privileged backgrounds.

claig · 28/11/2016 20:01

'So Adam Curtis is part of the establishment now? That's pretty hilarious.'

Is he BBC? Does he make programmes about "mind influencing" to influence your mind that he is on your side? Farage and Trump are on your side. I bet Adam Curtis voted for Blair.

Alyosha · 28/11/2016 20:02

Spin, that will make everything more expensive. How will people afford to buy domestically produced products when their price doubles but their wages remain the same?

It's the Corn laws all over again.

Kaija · 28/11/2016 20:03

And how much suffering do you think will result from all these factories that can't sell their products closing down overnight? What kind of time frame do you have in mind before the economic chaos abates and we can all enjoy our warm beer in this isolationist utopia?

Ontopofthesunset · 28/11/2016 20:03

Yes, Claig, if you really believe half of what you post you were the one born that day.

Inkanta · 28/11/2016 20:04

'Never has a Russian misstep meant a higher likelihood of a global war than now.'

Confused
Inkanta · 28/11/2016 20:07

Confused

Getting scared now.

claig · 28/11/2016 20:07

'Yes, Claig, if you really believe half of what you post you were the one born that day.'

Well, I predicted that Trump would win and I bet that BBC Adam Curtis didn't with all his "mind influencing" programmes. And if Trump gets in, I also think I know what he will do and it will benefit you and not Blair and that lot, and Trump won't be asking Curtis for a "mind bending" programme either.

Kaija · 28/11/2016 20:08

We know Claig, everyone you don't like is establishment elite. It's just that some of your targets, like this one, are exceptionally ludicrous as opposed to just run-of-the-mill baseless.

Although I did think it was a little unfair of him to blame the last 50 years of political apathy on Patti Smith.

Alyosha · 28/11/2016 20:09

Basically, if you don't think what claig thinks, you're establishment.

But she is useful for a steer on Moscow, I.e. despite Fillon's pro-putin aspect, Putin wants Le Pen (presumably because she's in hock to him and is a true believer). How do I know this? Claig doesn't like Fillon!

Kaija · 28/11/2016 20:10

Looked a lot like a predicted Trump win in Hypernormalisation actually.

Alyosha · 28/11/2016 20:11

Inkanta, do you actually want to respond to any of the points I made? Not sure if you think that electing a man who asked "why can't we just use Nukes" is a bad thing for world peace or not?

claig · 28/11/2016 20:11

'Claig doesn't like Fillon'

How do you know that? Are you making things up again? What happened to you in Ukraine? What were you doing there?

OP posts:
claig · 28/11/2016 20:12

What the hell does Alyosha mean in Ukrainian?

OP posts:
Spinflight · 28/11/2016 20:13

"And how much suffering do you think will result from all these factories that can't sell their products closing down overnight? "

Probably the same amount as we suffered when our factories shut down.

Though if you cared one jot for the likely repercussions in the developing world you've been awfully quiet about it. Indeed calling people names has been much higher in your to do list.

As I pointed out previously you can tell people's priorities as much by what they don't say as what they say.

I tried promoting the debate towards such issues earlier in the thread, to little interest.

Southallgirl · 28/11/2016 20:13

Thank you, squishy. I am very compassionate, I do not take life, but I'm also not a pushover. And what I really get upset about is how people in pursuit of an ideal will not address reality or economics. I do not delight in distress - where?

Some are so attached to an ideology that they continue to say that extra mouths to feed, extra bodies to heal and to house have no ramification on a country or its citizens. It's a bald-faced lie.

Even my Communist friend with whom I disagree on many issues, understands that there are few jobs available in England. What is available is low paid, many grossing £320 per week for a 40 hr week. No one can support renting a flat, food & fares from that. Some tax & NI is deducted, but they are subsidised to be here.

What is put into the public purse is very little. The only ones who benefit are employers.

claig · 28/11/2016 20:16

'Looked a lot like a predicted Trump win in Hypernormalisation actually.'

To be honest, I haven't watched it. i started watching it, but it was the usual subliminal images etc so I never got round to watch it all. I like Adam Curtis because he makes you think, even though I think it is probably very, very clever spin, much more sophisticated than Blair. What was it about and is it worth watching to the end?

OP posts:
Alyosha · 28/11/2016 20:16

Spin - how will people on low wages be able to afford domestically produced goods?

They won't all get jobs in factories - those days are long gone.

Southhall - the solution is to stop tax evasion and start taxing wealth (something claig is very against from memory).

Claig - I know I shouldn't wind you up. Hard to resist sometimes.

Kaija · 28/11/2016 20:16

Southall, I answered your post about extra mouths, and I linked to evidence in The Economist on the net contribution made by migrants in this country. And there's plenty more elsewhere. Who is ignoring the evidence?

Alyosha · 28/11/2016 20:18

Re Fillon, claig said upthread you thought he was an elitist stooge.

Kaija · 28/11/2016 20:19

Yes Claig, you should watch it. At the very least it will keep you out of trouble on here for a few hours.

Southallgirl · 28/11/2016 20:20

What the hell does Alyosha mean in Ukrainian?

CLAIG - It's a man's first name. A diminutive for Alexei usually. I've never known it be used by a woman, except there is a Ukrainian female singer who uses it, but her real name is Olena.
