More on the meaning of Trump, the Trumpsters and Trumpism

OP posts:
Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:34

I've no idea who that post is aimed at or what most of it means, but:

"a rapidly dwindling but shrill minority which has difficulty accepting that the world has changed for the better"

I'll certainly count myself part of this group. Although it is neither a minority nor dwindling. Shrill? Possibly. Hard to get heard over the alt-right and Brexity yelling.

squishysquirmy · 28/11/2016 19:36

Even if we are a "rapidly dwindling minority" (we're not) I'd rather stand with my conscience than the majority, spin. Smile

Spinflight · 28/11/2016 19:37

Was more aimed at those who tend towards using the word fascist several times in each post. Grin

Four more years of the tories, at least four of Trump. I might consider shares in kleenex. Smile

Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:38

Kleenex? Ew. Didn't know you liked them that much.

Lweji · 28/11/2016 19:39

Minority?

Not sure about that.

Still, history moves in cycles. Nothing that is happening is particularly new. Sadly, it will need people getting badly stung to move away from populism again.

squishysquirmy · 28/11/2016 19:40

Kaija: Grin and Envy (not envy, disgust at spin's kleenex)

Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:42

Spinflight where are these posts with the word fascist repeated several times? I've seen loads of repetitions of "the people" and "the elites" and similar floating signifiers but very little on fascism relatively speaking.

Spinflight · 28/11/2016 19:43

The cycle would be that away from the nation state and towards pan governmental bodies. Which is a fifty, maybe seventy year phenomenon.

So it might swing back in your lifetime, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Spinflight · 28/11/2016 19:44

Disgust?

I don't even understand your reference...

Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:45

Spinflight, Kleenex aside, how do you feel that your life is going to improve under Trump/with Brexit?

Southallgirl · 28/11/2016 19:45

a minority of voters chose Donald Trump's brand of populism

How votes are counted and therefore who wins an election in USA is by the rules of the Electoral Colleges. Dem dose pesky rules. As I've said before, if Americans want to overhaul this system, then do it. But you cannot suspend rules just for one election because some dont like the result. Ridiculous.

The thrashing about and wailing in the streets reminded me how similar the behaviour is to when cult members are torn away from their cult and they are angry and seek to return to the safety of the hive.

Spinflight · 28/11/2016 19:46

Please explain this kleenex obsession you have...

Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:46

You started it!

Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:47

"The thrashing about and wailing in the streets reminded me how similar the behaviour is to when cult members are torn away from their cult and they are angry and seek to return to the safety of the hive."

That is a very unusual response to political protest.

squishysquirmy · 28/11/2016 19:49

I don't think the effects of globalistion can be undone. It would be like trying to squeeze toothpaste back into a tube. Better regulation and employment rights would help to mitigate many of the negative effects, but we're very unlikely to see any of that from Trump or the current Tory government. Trump in particular wants to slash regulation. You can moan about "red tape" all you like, but you won't realise quite how much some of that regulation protects you until it's gone....

Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:50

Yes, exactly, squishy

Alyosha · 28/11/2016 19:51

Squishy - thanks, I think you're probably right, but it's hard as all my most pessimistic 2016 predictions have come true :'(

Inkanta - ooh, what else should we be worried about?

Not really sure 2 million more votes than Trump and 48% Remain is a "dwindling minority"...but there you are.

The good thing about all of this is that it's revealed the true character of many. I always disliked people like Owen Jones (from the left) and Tim Montgomerie (from the right), but they've been really principled at time when it's been hard not to. Special achievement award to David Frum (ex speechwriter for GWB). His twitter is a thing of lucid, depressing beauty.

Spinflight · 28/11/2016 19:52

I mentioned kleenex as the snowflakes have years of tears ahead of them. Possibly decades.

Chris1234567890 · 28/11/2016 19:52

"Kleenex? Ew. Didn't know you liked them that much."

Ah, youve got an age on Kaija now Claig. Its a bit mean picking on the yoof now. I was going to say, that accounts for the student union dribble, but Im not sure higher ed has been involved, hence various odd posts asking for explanations.

I see my stalkers back.... Im flattered. Smile

squishysquirmy · 28/11/2016 19:52

Southall, at times on this thread you have revealed yourself to be quite a compassionate person. At other times you seem to delight in the distress and fear of others, and you share articles from a really nasty, vitriolic website. I can't work you out.

Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:53

Spinflight, I'm truly not interested in your Kleenex, but I really would like to know how you think a Trump presidency and/or Brexit will benefit you in the next 4 years or so.

Southallgirl · 28/11/2016 19:53

That is a very unusual response to political protest

It's more than that ..... it's an unrealistic desire to circumvent how voting in USA is done. The longstanding electoral college system means that the candidate with the most votes does not necessarily win.

The last upset that I remember (though not on this scale) was George Bush jnr and Florida.

claig · 28/11/2016 19:54

'Who's watched Adam Curtis's Hypernormalisation? It certainly backs up some of the suggestions on this thread. I hadn't thought of Claig like that before'

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. How gullible you are! Let me guess - you voted for Blair and Adam Curtis is Oxbridge. There's one born everyday.

OP posts:
Alyosha · 28/11/2016 19:56

Trump himself decried the EC. He's very touchy about having lost the popular vote, so presumably will welcome a full audit to check the results.

I think he won without fraud but he's' not doing himself any favours with his "I was robbed of a popular vote victory rhetoric"!

Kaija · 28/11/2016 19:56

So Adam Curtis is part of the establishment now? That's pretty hilarious.
