Have the House of Lords voted yet about the tax credits?

Just wondering if my last hope of the House of Lords voting against the tax credits changes has happened yet?

OP posts:
ElizabethG81 · 26/10/2015 19:48

Well, several Tory MPs have said in the past few days that they wouldn't vote for these changes again - i.e. if the Lords send it back to the Commons then they will rebel. They're going to struggle to get it past a lot of their own MPs now that they actually realise the impact of the proposals.

I can't wait to see Gideon's face.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 26/10/2015 19:49

What do you wanna reckon that universal credit will be ruled out by next April if this is passed?

claig · 26/10/2015 19:49

Government have to find a way to get them up and running if they want to pursue them says Channel 4 if another vote goes against them.

This will be delayed for 3 years if it stands says Paul Mason on Channel 4 News. HOL have just thrown back a whole chunk of the Finance Bill apparently.

GingerIvy · 26/10/2015 19:50

What realistically could the Tory government do at this point? Can they get around this at all or is it pretty much in stone once this is voted on?

cruikshank · 26/10/2015 19:50

seriouslyffs - I always think that one of the great contradictions of the HoL is that because of its composition it is actually very good at stuff like this - but also because of its composition it is limited in what it can do.

Ferocia · 26/10/2015 19:51

Yes! Up yours, David Cameron!

Is there anything preventing them from delaying the implementation of the living wage, or does that have to go ahead as scheduled?

NapoleonsNose · 26/10/2015 19:51

Shit, I'm nervous

Rebecca2014 · 26/10/2015 19:51

I shouted for joy, gotta admit. So happy the house of lords are there

bloodyteenagers · 26/10/2015 19:52

But as we know surely they will just fudge the figures
To show how people will be better off. The same spin when it was first announced that because of the living wage, families
Will be better off... Forgetting a lot of people are already above the
Living wage but still need that bit extra to put food on the table.

Shutthatdoor · 26/10/2015 19:53

full transitional protection for a minimum of three years for all low-income families and individuals currently receiving tax credits before 5 April 2016

Surely then they are creating a two tear system.

Those that claiming before April 2016 will be OK, those that need to after will be royally shafted?

ilovesooty · 26/10/2015 19:53

They'll reform the House of Lords now to get their own way.

GingerIvy · 26/10/2015 19:53

I wonder if they're figuring they can get changes through by then that will mitigate that?

GingerIvy · 26/10/2015 19:54

That's my concern sooty

Nottodaythankyouorever · 26/10/2015 19:54

What realistically could the Tory government do at this point? Can they get around this at all or is it pretty much in stone once this is voted on?

I believe they can ammendments and then vote again.

claig · 26/10/2015 19:54

Tougher Labour motion being voted on now - a 3 year review - which Sky are implying will kill it if passed.

PetitPiaf · 26/10/2015 19:55

Passed!! Only just though...

claig · 26/10/2015 19:55

Government defeated on the Labour motion by 17 votes. Constitutional crisis.

Funinthesun15 · 26/10/2015 19:56

How I bet will now be reformed.

KatharineClifton · 26/10/2015 19:56

Holis' amendment just passed is:

"to move, as an amendment to the motion in the name of the Lord Privy Seal, to leave out all the words after “that” and insert “this House declines to consider the draft Regulations laid before the House on 7 September until the Government, (1) following consultation have reported to Parliament a scheme for full transitional protection for a minimum of three years for all low-income families and individuals currently receiving tax credits before 5 April 2016, such transitional protection to be renewable after three years with parliamentary approval, and (2) have laid a report before the House, detailing their response to the analysis of the draft Regulations by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, and considering possible mitigating action.” [my bold]

claig · 26/10/2015 19:57

Full protection for 3 years for all low income families. Governemnt either concede and come up with mitigation etc or introduce new statutory instrument

Bubblesinthesummer · 26/10/2015 19:57

They will now go after ESA/PIP/DLA instead.

Basically the most vulnerable in society.

I just hope that if they do that the people who fought against these cuts do for these groups.

GingerIvy · 26/10/2015 19:58

From what I've seen, there are quite a few MPs that wouldn't vote this through again. Realistically even if they reformed the HoLs, wouldn't it need to get past the MPs again first before it comes before the HoLs?

Rebecca2014 · 26/10/2015 19:58

It is unlikely Tories will push this through again in 3 years time, remember this will be nearer to the election. I hope this will severely damage the Tories reputation and people remember.

Shutthatdoor · 26/10/2015 19:59

So those claiming TC now are ok. Those that need to claim them from next year won't be.

Hardly fair Hmm

NapoleonsNose · 26/10/2015 20:00

Stick that in yer' pipes and fucking smoke it Gideon and Cameron
