Lily Philips - can she be a 'true' Christian?

https://www.premierchristianity.com/opinion/lily-phillips-has-been-baptised-i-pray-its-accompanied-by-change/20772.article

This article made me think about what it means to be Christian especially about the concepts of sin, judgment and redemption.

In my view Lily of course is a Christian being baptised but to not give up a lucrative adult film career possibly does cause angst amongst more traditional Christians.

We are taught not to judge 'Let those without sin cast the first stone' and to accept the universal unconditionally of forgiveness. (We pray every day about the forgiveness of sin) so it is difficult thologically to condemn others.

However does any fellow Christian need to remind Lily she makes money from a profession where many women with less choice are coerced and manipulated for thr gratification of men? Wr have moved away from a less judgmental Christianity but how do you view participation in Christian life with such a job?

LP Baptism

Lily Phillips has been baptised. I pray it's accompanied by change

The baptism of a pornographic actress has caused controversy, but the real question isn't whether Lily Phillips' sins are too great for God's grace - it's whether she truly understands what repentance means, says Lois McLatchie-Miller

Of course it won't stop them. People are free in this country to pursue what they wish in a secular sense. However personally I don't affirm those views and am not worried about 'being out of touch'!

Thankfully for those the church is discriminating against have legal protection which overrides any religious laws.

Can something be a sin of its legal?

The problem in my opinion for any religion really is that if the state law differs to regions law then there is deference to state law for obvious reasons.

This can cause a challenge when realise Lily of the thread title has broken no law (as far as I am aware) but if a church organisation refused to hire a homosexual then they would be breaking laws about discrimination.

The church has to act lawfully but when the law is contrary to religous conviction then there is an obvious tension. I know Muslims I know find this very difficult to navigate but that is a subject for a different thread.

We do have the law of the land but freedom of religion is Article of 18 of the United Nations Declaration of Human rights. Freedom of thought, conscience and religion is enshrined in this law.

Article 29 (2) is important when it comes to that :

  1. In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society.

That limits freedom of religion. Religions must comply with the law when it comes to the rights of others.

@GentleSheep "The Church does not need to become a chameleon and change with society. It needs to be the bedrock we can stand on when all is chaos around us."
This ^
The world should not try to change the church, the church should try and change the world.
Look at the motto of the Carthusians "Stat crux dum volvitur orbis," = "the Cross stands while the world turns"

This is why I left the C of E because they were trying to be 'all things to all people' and failing miserably.
We were told that Women Priests would change the C of E, they would make the church more 'family friendly' and put more bums on seats. It didn't happen.

Then they turned a blind eye to gay vicars living with their partners in the vicarage. Still the C of E was haemorrhaging members.

Now they are blessing same-sex marriages and still no upturn in attendences.

According to some, the Catholic Church is having a revival www.reuters.com/world/uk/catholicism-spreads-amongst-young-britons-longing-something-deeper-2025-05-07/

Gosh. I guess this guidance will be tested under law quite a few times. There is a lot to unpick there. I think ultimately the law seems to allow exclusion in very specific circumsrances, perhaps having an LGB conference in a church hall?

I still think those that are devout in their belief possibly would want the law of the land to support their belief system and obviously this won't happen. Blasphemy is an example......It is perfectly legal to blaspheme but not to drop litter in a church.

That is interesting.

One thing I noted from coverage of the Pope meeting the Archbishop of Canterbury was that the facial expression of the Pope was slightly perplexed and maybe a little dismissive...I wonder his real thoughts about the church that displaced Catholicism in the UK is now a woman? Maybe the fact you are nit going to get a female Pope gives a robustness to Catholisism in that is unchanging?

I think that one of the studies this report mentioned was by the Bible society which proved to be flawed and was discussed in the Christian section on this forum.
The Church of England did write a report recently and I mentioned that here on young people attending church.

Thanks for that.

If you don't mind me asking though, why does it matter? Church numbers I mean. Because if it is only the saved who go up, then everyone else will just cease to exist. And if one does not exist, there is just nothing. After death I mean.

By the same token why are people even bothered about Lily Phillips? Why waste 16 pages of discussion on the topic?
If she's judged by God to be 'righteous' she'll go to Heaven and if she isn't she won't and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

I suppose the point all us mortals need a bit of guidance on what is righteous and waht isn't and how redemption works 🤔

What happens to her ?

Lily hasn't committed adultery which is a worse sin because it is in the 10 commandments???

You've spent 16 pages arguing with just about everyone on this thread that Christianity is all crap, based on fallacies, has no proof to support it, is a religion that's followed by the gullible/feeble-minded/superstitious and now you want a Christian perspective on something?

Are you for real ?

Do your own research.

Seems a simple question to me. We can make it poster specific. What do you think will happen to her when she dies ?

It's open to the board of course.

As long as you repent (at some point). It's the belief in Christ that's important. St. Augustine took a long time to give up his sexual deviancy (sleeping with a woman out of wedlock)

So what happens to her when she dies without repenting ?
