How can it be possible for a man to have 4 wives and treat them all equally?

I assume it's just the same as having multiple kids, they'd have to split their time/energy between the wives the same way plenty of parents do for their children

aliahb · 10/02/2025 04:49

But how can you fairly treat them all

I'm English and atheist so I'm just assuming here,

But surely just the same way we treat multiple children equally? Buy everyone the same value of things, spend one to one with each one, support everyone the same.

If people can manage to have multiple children and treat them all the same then I can't see it being any different with multiple adults

Why are you asking about 4 wives in Islam?

Why not ask about nice Christians like the Mormons?

FLDS sister wives live together in the same house - muslim wives require a separate house each, and everything should be divided equally. So the set up of their daily lives and motivations is very different.

CanadianJohn · 10/02/2025 05:24

I can't imagine having enough emotional energy, not to mention sexual energy, to keep four women happy.

aliahb · 10/02/2025 05:27

So my mum is part of polygamy and I was shocked when dad try to justify

Well, polygamy is banned by the Mormon church for starters.

Sects that practise polygamy are usually considered cults and in the case of the FLDS, polygamy covers up an awful lot of forced marriage and paedophilia.

InNeedofAdvice1234 · 10/02/2025 05:30

My understanding is polygamy was initially an act of charity by the founder of Islam. A single woman in a desert with trade across isolated terrain as the main industry had very little means to support herself. The ratio of women to men was higher in those days. I am not sure the same logic applies to modern circumstances though

aliahb · 10/02/2025 05:32

That sounds right, the modern day doesn't require it to even Happen

What was his motivation?

aliahb · 10/02/2025 05:35

His was Islam allows him too, he also needs his urges satisfied

Just another nonsensical thing men made up and called it religion.

aliahb · 10/02/2025 05:39

Exactly yes

It's an ancient religion steeped in the misogyny of the time, when women were property and their primary "use" was for birthing and raising children. Trying to rationalise it against today's ethical standards is a road to nowhere. It is, however, a very useful prop for men who want to subjugate women, in the same way that many religions are.

BlondiePortz · 10/02/2025 06:08

It's funny they never seem to have a woman being allowed to have lots of husbands.

Mind you the women are stupid for falling for it in the first place but that is up to them

Yeah polyandry does exist - usually it's found among communities with scarce resources as the women produce fewer children. I think there's a couple in mountain regions where wife is shared between brothers

Why do you assume there is any attempt to “keep (them) happy”?

Monogamy is a Christian concept of marriage and Christianity is much, much older than Islam.

Mormonism is a heretical cult and is not recognised as ‘Christian’.

Because the mainstream LDS church stopped polygamy in 1890?

Ask Kody Brown.

LeaningOnTheEverlastingArms · 10/02/2025 08:47

Is anyone else disturbed by the posts equating a husband relating to multiple wives as being similar to a parent relating to multiple children?

DeepFatFried · 10/02/2025 08:48

LeaningOnTheEverlastingArms · 10/02/2025 08:39

Monogamy is a Christian concept of marriage and Christianity is much, much older than Islam.

But not older than the nomadic tribes and variety of cultures into which Islam (and Christianity) arrived.

DeepFatFried · 10/02/2025 08:51

As it happens I see no reason why people cannot enter into family relationships as they freely choose.

Why could not, for example, a lesbian couple not be married, in a marriage of 3, with the bio Dad of the children? To form a family for the children?

Freely choose, with mutual consent being the crucial factor of course
