If God doesn't believe anyone deserves hell he doesn't have to send them there. Or even make it in the first place.

@watmel I see your point and often ponder this too. I suppose it comes back to trust.

I would have undoubtedly been condemned and probably executed as a heretic at many points in history.

@OMG12 I'm saying nothing. 😜

@poweredbysteam Oh dear, another one looking for a fight. Please move along.

@Parker231
I’m interested - I don’t need a religion in my life but intrigued as to why others do.

That's fair enough.

Still don’t understand what CS Lewis has to do with real life.

I tried to explain before. If you're not aware, CS Lewis was a Christian. His Narnia stories have a very Christian theme, for example, Aslan represents Jesus Christ. He had unbelievers in mind himself when he wrote that extract about the Dwarfs.

Nor am I. I can't read the Narnia books at all now, they've been thoroughly spoiled for me. His portayal of Islam is horrific.

@pointythings Do you mean the use of the racial slur beginning with D? Or the Calormenes in general?

You'll doubtless disagree with most of this but this, but anyway:

www.narniaweb.com/resources-links/are-the-chronicles-of-narnia-sexist-and-racist

But how could a human not have free will? We'd be more like sophisticated computers or something.

@Mustardseed86 I quite agree.

This has been genuinely interesting. I'm Anglican but feel like the Church of England doesn't meet my needs anymore.

@ChickenRat I see you've recently created your own thread in relation to this. I think that would be a more appropriate place to post.

I mean you could say how terribly wrong it is to torture and kill people in horrendous ways for having a different belief system and that everyone should be allowed their own views and freedom to practice their spirituality…..

He seems to have a particular bee in his bonnet about this. Out of all the bad things, he named this number 3 of the worst things you can do #egomaniac/contolfreak/clearlymadeupbyabloke

It's bonkers.

Submitting to anyone or anything is suspect.

Parents are people- some good, some not so good.
Some parents are paedophiles, or murderers, many are abusive.

Parents don't deserve automatic respect or submission.

OMG12 · 19/05/2023 08:19

Maybe we should start a welcoming thread for anyone wanting to explore different ideas on spirituality that would be welcoming of all viewpoints. I find it sad when peoples questions are shut down.

pointythings · 19/05/2023 08:21

I only answered no to the submission to parents question because my parents are dead. I was certainly not submitting to them while they were alive, even as a child. My parents didn't require submission because they were great and what they said and did made sense.

My foster son also does not submit to his highly abusive mother and absent father.

Submission is an ugly word.

That is a good idea, but the problem with many religious adherants is that they don't just think they are right, they know they are right. Religions, even different churches within the same religion disagree.

My family is very religious, my sister particularly.
There is no question in her mind that her religious path is the right one. Not even up for consideration.

Religion divides humanity and creates conflict.

This is unfortunately very true. It’s sad really because talking to others about their beliefs helps you understand your own. I always feel the more aggressive people are about the fact they’re universally right the less certain they must be about their personal truth. They need validation from others.

I know what my truth is, haven’t got a scooby about anyone else

pointythings · 19/05/2023 08:41

@OMG12 same. And I'm comfortable with not knowing. The only thing I am right about is that 🐈 cats are great.

Parker231 · 19/05/2023 08:48

Am comfortable with a life as a non believer. Don’t need a religion to support me. Happy for everyone else to have their own beliefs so long as they don’t intrude on my life.

speakout · 19/05/2023 09:00

They do though- that's the problem.
Religion influences our laws, our social structures, our education system, gives permission to patriarchy, and impinges on women's rights, gay rights, women's body autonomy and reproductive choices.
Religion causes bigotry, predudice and violence.
Religion causes parents to mutilate the genitals of their children.
Religion fuels fear by gaslighting adherants into thinking they are sinful or broken, and even causes anxiety about an afterlife- " Will you make it to heaven?"

We are all affected by religion, no matter our own views.

Unfortunately your comments are 100% true. American women would still have the protection of making their own decisions about their own bodies if it hadn’t been for the religious right wing overturning RoevWade.
We still have very discriminatory churches in the UK.

But dogs are so much better than your cats, dogs are great. If you spell dog backwards you get God- need I say anymore - and if you come at me with craziness like that only works in English, or it’s purely a subjective matter or there’s room for both you’re wrong!!!!!😂😂😂😂

I would say that’s largely the point of organised religion Jesus would be turning in his tomb (if they hadn’t stolen his body)

Dogs are indeed also great. I am a cat person, you are a dog person and we coexist respectfully. Something certain people could learn from.

And I love Egyptian mythology with their cats, it’s almost like people can respect others thoughts and preferences whilst still having their own- who knew????

poweredbysteam · 19/05/2023 14:43

Oh dear, another one looking for a fight. Please move along.

Er...no. You were asked about the historical (and sometimes current) treatement by Christians of women and gay people and you said something about not "being of the world" and "worldy pressures". I just don't see how they are connected.

But I see know you are not interested in answering questions. You want to police who can and can't post on this thread, only people who agree with you and Christianity and don't ask awkward questions allowed.

This has been genuinely interesting. I'm Anglican but feel like the Church of England doesn't meet my needs anymore. The second quiz told me I'm 45% pagan and to be honest I'd like to explore that a bit

What was the second quiz? I missed that.

pointythings · 19/05/2023 20:52

I think it's on the first or second page of this thread - I put it up. It isn't a very good one, actually. There's bound to be better ones around.

Mustardseed86 · 19/05/2023 22:54

Thanks - found it! It was the second post on the thread so clearly my observational skills are lacking. Apparently I'm 39% pagan 😄 but I can't see the relevance of most of the questions to any particular belief system (what is a pantheon? Etc). I'm going to see if I can find a quiz I remember from a few years ago and post that if anyone is interested!

Mustardseed86 · 19/05/2023 23:05

I think it was this one:

https://www.beliefnet.com/entertainment/quizzes/beliefomatic.aspx

And apparently I'm Orthodox Quaker?! Although actually the quiz isn't really detailed enough to determine that IMO. I might be wrong on this but I believe Quakers do not take communion, so it doesn't seem like a perfect fit for me. I do have a very high opinion of Quakers though, in general. They seem to have very deep convictions without being authoritarian and prescriptive towards others.

And me. I looked up the definition of a secular humanist -someone who believes in the importance of reason and of people rather than religions. Perfect!

OMG12 · 20/05/2023 13:00

I got new age which is a bit insulting but assume is a lack of understanding of other western systems by whoever designed it.😀
