@Vincitveritas Every version of heaven that I've heard sounds awful. Eternal life. How would I fill it? Watching over loved ones seeing them making mistakes and not being able to comfort them sounds like torture. If there is no wrong doing, hurt, sadness, etc. in heaven do you even have free will there? And if there's no free will in heaven, will I even be me? Same question about me without my body. How can I still be me without my brain and body? do I have to worship this god character while I'm there? He sounds like a vulnerable narcissist.

MintTeaAndChocolate · 15/03/2023 08:04

You scored in the 65-85% range.
Obviously you are a nice person to be around and generally try to live a good life. However, anyone who thinks that their good works will get them into Heaven is severely misguided for the Bible says that 'Cursed is everyone who does no CONTINUE to do EVERYTHING written in the God's law.'

Oh I guess not then.

AnorLondo · 15/03/2023 08:54

What is the point of this? Do you think people are going to convert based on a buzzfeed-esque quiz?

I don't believe loved ones are 'watching over us', that's the work of angels and they are separate beings not human souls. Personally I find the idea of my relatives hanging around observing everything really creepy, as much as I love them! (Sorry guys).

I think time will feel very different to how it does now, on earth. Free will remains, but we'll be made perfect - the best version of ourselves - so negativity, past trauma, grief, sadness, pain, physical and mental scars/afflictions will all be gone. The Bible likens this to burning off impurities from metal in a furnace, leaving behind only the pure shining silver. Also, we won't remain apart from the body forever. God is eventually going to create a new heaven and new earth and we will receive new, flawless, immortal 'glorified' physical bodies.

It is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him" 1 Corinthians 2:9.
If you find yourself in Heaven, you will want to worship God!

'Cursed is everyone who does no CONTINUE to do EVERYTHING written in the God's law.'
@MintTeaAndChocolate This basically means if you're relying on your own merits and good work in following God's law to save you then you better follow it all exactly to the letter and never put a foot wrong. Only one has ever managed to achieve that and His name is Jesus.

@AnorLondo It seems I spoke too soon! Don't know about you, but I enjoy a fun quiz every now and then. I'm not trying to convert anyone, just simply opening up a discussion about Heaven with people who might only have a vague unbiblical concept of what it might be.

I'm going on up to the spirit in the sky, that's where I'm gonna go when I die!
85-99% chance despite being an atheist 😂 I hope it's right and I see my lovely grandma again who was a devout Catholic and would be very proud

@Vincitveritas Humans are not perfect. I don't want to be perfect I want to be me, that's not free will. I will be what this god thinks is perfect which is a mindless automaton worship machine. No thanks! What sort of a being wants to be worshiped? A megalomaniac.

AuntieMarys · 15/03/2023 12:03

No such thing.

That's surprising, I know I'm very much looking forward to throwing off the baggage - that would feel like true freedom.
God is pure love, light, joy and peace. Just being in the presence of God I imagine would bring the ultimate happiness. If I've had only a tiny taste of what that feels like in the here and now, worship will not be a chore.

Hopefully death is the end. Nothingness is enough for me. If you no longer exist, there is no more suffering or pain. For the Buddhists, non-existence is heaven - and I agree.

All religions are man-made, but I have far more respect for Buddhism. It’s so much more sophisticated than Christianity. Of all the silly cults and religions humans have invented, Christianity has got to be one of the silliest.

Vincitveritas · 15/03/2023 12:45

@JoonT You're entitled to your opinion, but please keep it respectful.

The problem I have with the quiz's criteria for entry to Heaven is that you either have to be perfect (which is impossible and I bet Jesus said the local equivalent of 'shit' a few times in his life), or you have to ask forgiveness based on your 'transgressions' of a bunch of random criteria set by a nebulous being who isn't exactly getting everything right themselves. I have no intention of asking forgiveness for looking at Jason Momoa and thinking 'oooh, nice' because there's nothing wrong with doing that. It harms no-one. If it offends a god, that god can do one.

StopStartStop · 15/03/2023 13:01

Someone asked about my NDE.

I was ill, ready to accept death.
I saw heaven - very traditional, cloud-like walls, and a gate. Thought I'd curl up like a dog or cat by the wall, and be perfectly happy there for eternity.
Was pulled through the wall by an unseen force. Found myself in a garden - very simple, just grass with edges, like the verges at the side of suburban roads. (Didn't say my NDE would be exciting...😂)

Was able to run (I'm old and fat, I don't usually run) along the road though the surface was knee-deep cloud. I ran towards the light.
The light managed to be both white and gold in colour (not in patches, all at once) and gave great warmth. The light was also the sense of absolute bliss, peace, joy. Knowing that everything about you is known, understood, you are completely and utterly loved. Knowing that this is true of everyone, no matter what they've done.
The light asked me one question, "Is there anything left that you need to do?"
I answered honestly "I think my daughter still needs me." (She was already adult).
Immediately I was back in my body.
The sense of loss was immeasurable, shocking, devastating. That stayed with me, perhaps for two years.
It made me less afraid of dying (but not completely unafraid because the way to death is often painful).
It made me less judgemental, more relaxed about my own religious observance, more willing to love people at a distance, even more confident that positive thoughts and prayers will actually help people.

I think it's my role/duty to share my experience when asked. I don't ask anyone to believe it.

That's the point of the quiz; that it's not possible to score 100%, that God's ways are not our ways, that the only thing we can rely on is Jesus' atoning sacrifice for our sins.

The swearing question was more related to taking God's name in vain rather than general swearing e.g. saying "For God's sake!" Or "Christ on a bike!" etc. I don't think Jesus did say shit, even after accidentally smaking his thumb with a hammer while making a chair (which most certainly happened!).

Acknowledgement of humanity's sin nature, including your own, is an important step towards being right with God.

OP posts:
pointythings · 15/03/2023 13:49

@Vincitveritas you see, I have a problem with the concept of sin because it includes so many things which seen objectively are not harmful. According to your faith, having sex outside of marriage is wrong because your god says it is a sin. Why? Sex is enjoyable. Our bodies are made for pleasure. Why is it wrong for two consenting adults who are fully capable of making that decision to enjoy it? That comes across as spiteful and arbitrary to me. Obviously at the time when the Bible was written it was necessary for many reasons to know who the parents of children were. These days that requirement no longer exists, so why have the rules not adapted? I operate on principles of whether something is rational and on whether actions cause harm to self and others, so all the sexual prohibitions specifically make no sense to me and I will never accept that I have to abide by them.

Other things make more sense, but even there a lot of it feels like being punished for thought crime. Orwell made it quite plain what he thought of that, and I'm with him.

PopsicleHustler · 15/03/2023 14:33

Jesus doesn't decide who doesn't get and who does get in to heaven.

Jesus isn't God.

Jesus didn't die on the cross.

God is the one who decided who goes to heaven and you have to be a good person and worship him.

So, Interesting that people believe that Jesus died for our sins, so you can be a flawed and sinful person. And you can be a murderer and you can be a prostitute or hurt animals but you are guaranteed heaven because Jesus died for our sins.

There is no verse in the bible where Jesus says I am God it where he says worship me.

The bible says you should not have any other God's besides me
Exodus 20.2

The bible also says God cannot be a man.
Numbers 23.19

Jesus is A Man.
And a great one too. But he is not God.

Jesus also said on the bible, I cant do anything except through the will of my father.
John 5.30 he says by myself I can do nothing, I judge only as my judgement is just, but I seek not to please myself but to please the one who sent me

Jesus also prayed on the floor with his face touching the earth.

Just like Muslims
Matthew 26.36 and Mark 14 35

Jesus didn't eat pork. Just like Muslims the bible says don't eat pork. Just like the quran says. Pigs eat their own poo and have tapeworm and hepatitis yet people still love to eat it. Pigs also sweat internally but yet people still love to eat it. Pigs eat their own young and have multiple partners for sexual intersperse yet they love to eat it.
He also only eat clean meats and didn't eat shellfish.

Jesus was circumcised , just like Muslims. Luke 2.21

Jesus washed himself before he prayed like the Muslims

Jesus was never crucified. Instead he was risen to heaven by God before they got a chance to hang him on a cross. If Jesus was God or son of God, do you really think that he would allow himself or his son to die naked weeing and going to the toilet on himself. Its not at all possible.

Jesus himself said in the bible, do not put me higher than my father. Do not worship me. And
that he is a fellow servant. Throughout revelation

Jesus said in the bible, I have come to split mother and son by the sword. This is not true and not something Jesus would say. He also said he wants to turn fathers and sons against each other.
Matthew 10.35

Jesus also told a woman he isn't going to talk to her because she is like a dog. Not true, again. Jesus would never talk this way.

Matthew 15.21 to 28

Jesus also said he was tempted by the devil by a tree on a mountain. Really, God or son of God was tempted by the Devil????
Come on, really???
Matthew 4.1-11

The bible says the first commandment is not go have any other God's before me. Exodus 20.3

So how the heck are we calling Jesus, God???? Jesus is not God. He cannot be God. He never claimed to be a higher God. So when Jesus was praying, are you telling me he prayed to himself??????? When Jesus was able to heal the blind, he didn't say " Guys, this is all down to me! I did this!' No. He said its through God's will that he did it.

So, happy I left Christianity and joined Islam and love Jesus as a prophet and messenger of God. We believe he will come back. We believe he is the truth, that he was truthful, we belive following him is the way, but he is not the literal God. We believe he is a miracle birth through our lovely Mary, who would you believe wears a hijab like the Muslims do- the bible says to shave your head if you don't wear it.
We don't put Jesus or Abraham, moses or Muhammad or Noah higher than God.

God is one. God is just. Its through him, that we go to heaven. Bu doing the right things the quran teaches us like helping the poor and praying regularly, being a good neighbour and paying charity, being kid and gentle and prophet muhammed himself said before he died his last words were be good to your woman. Because he said the best of us are those who are best to their wives.
The quran teaches us to treat animals with kindness and to be equally kind to your non Muslim neighbour as to your Muslim neighbour and do not cut off ties with family. Its amazing. It really opened my eyes. I am so happy to be a Muslim and recognise Jesus as an amazing prophet who delivered the message of the Lord and will come back and fight the antichrist !!!!
Please he is not God. Please. Lets stop this when he himself said in the bible don't worship me.

pointythings · 15/03/2023 14:42

@PopsicleHustler you don't seem to know a great deal about pigs and about animals in general. Pigs only eat their own young when under extreme environmental stress. Often imposed by humans. There are many other animals which do the same thing - for instance, is there a prohibition on Muslims eating rabbit?

It is likely that the prohibition on eating pork and shellfish stems from the high risk of food poisoning from eating these things in a world without safe and hygienic storage mechanisms and adequate treatments for worms - with pigs, the main problem is trichonosis. I ask you the same question as I asked @Vincitveritas - why do faiths not adapt their tenets to changes in the world that people live in, especially when those tenets relate to matters of health and safety?

I say no thank you to Islam, as I do to all faiths.

@StopStartStop Thank you for sharing. Were/are you a Christian? Have you any idea how long you'd been gone for?

Gone for only a few minutes, less than an hour.
I was a Christian. I still am, but lapsed.

Vincitveritas · 15/03/2023 15:08

@PopsicleHustler Wow, so much to unpack! I'll have to work through your post when time allows. I have addressed some of your points to a pp on previous threads.

@pointythings The rules don't change because God is unchanging. The boundaries are there to keep us safe. I trust there is good reason for not allowing sex outside of marriage - fewer STDs and unwanted pregnancies to start with. Sex is supposed to feel good, it was made for pleasure as well as procreation, but it's been perverted through sin.

OP posts:
pointythings · 15/03/2023 15:31

@Vincitveritas we have treatments for STDs now. We have contraception and we have legal abortion in many countries.

Sin doesn't exist. Either something is harmful and wrong, or it is not. Sin is a term used by a controlling deity and the controlling followers of said deity.

If you go by the Bible, masturbation is a sin. Where's the sense in that? It's pleasure with zero risk of pregnancy or STDs.

Vincitveritas · 15/03/2023 16:00

@StopStartStop That's great, why the lapse if it's not too personal?

@pointythings Contraception is not always watertight (excuse the pun), people can stil die of HIV and the like and while abortion might be legal, it doesn't make it morally right. Self pleasure isn't necessarily prohibited, it's the sexual fantasies or use of pornography that often accompany it that's the main issue.

OP posts:
pointythings · 15/03/2023 16:10

@Vincitveritas but that's just what your god and your church say. Since I do not believe your god exists and do not accept that your church has any moral authority over me, the matter is moot. I won't get into the abortion debate with you, but I will say that there are cases where abortion is absolutely the moral thing to do. It's called termination for medical reasons. So the picture is not as simplistic as you make it out to be.

Why is it wrong for a single person to masturbate while fantasising about someone? I can see the pornography issue (though there is of course always written porn with no pictures, where again I cannot see the harm unless it's about things involving rape, violence, underage participants etc. - consenting adults are nobody's business but their own).
