Well here you are then Smile I don't post often, but just to save Nickel a job...

OP posts:
thejaffacakesareonme · 21/01/2012 11:50

We told DS1 that it was really rude to say OMG (he was saying it in a really affected way with lots of drama) and that he should say "oh my gosh". So far, it seems to have worked in that at least he doesn't say it in front of us. Haven't a clue whether or not he says it at school. It wouldn't surprise me if he modifies his speech slightly when he is at home. I know I did when I was his age and developed a very broad accent and glottal stop when I was away from my parents, so it wouldn't surprise me if he said OMG when he is with his friends.

Bluetinkerbell · 21/01/2012 13:58

Vocations Adviser called back... of course when I was out last night to Youth Club. Rang her back today and left a message again...

DD1 also says OMG, picked it up on the school run and from the older children at the childminder. Good ideas to deal with it! :)

Had a bit of an disagreement with the vicar about me being at youth club all the time and me having to hand in my working hours for this week as I said I had been working less because DD1 is at home with chicken pox and I wasn't too well myself... grmbl... I should learn to keep my mouth shut.

madhairday · 21/01/2012 19:31

Hello hello! Just found you and will read through properly in a minute. Back from my conference - had the most amazing time - great speakers, awesome worship, great times catching up with friends. Just loved it so much - and stayed well :) I'm rather hyper from it all, but do feel energised and ready to go again. Felt God's presence so amazingly - just lovely.

notevenamousie · 22/01/2012 06:24

Hi everyone,
I heard this yesterday at an AA meeting and it reminded me of some of you very hard working ladies here - "we are all willing in this group - some of us are willing to do all the work, and some of us are willing to let them". Not sure what the answer is, mind... If people only realised that service actually does more for you than the people you are helping.
My little reflection on more modern music (and we get last minute changes often) is that we aren't really sight-reading because we've played most of it before. We have a big practice every couple of months for new songs but otherwise half an hour before church does us just fine really. Must check if I'm playing tonight though...
Does anyone else wake up disturbed by dreams? It's happened the last couple of days and I really don't like it. Very vivid, intense, negative dreams. I'm quite restless this morning now - hopefully it will ease off, going to hop in the bath and do my readings.
mhd is it the London New Wine Women's day you are going to? I could be quite tempted to join you. It sounds like you've had a wonderful experience.

madhairday · 22/01/2012 14:06

Yes mousie it is. I will go find the thread and revive it. I am travelling down on the train from Birmingham so people could meet at stations. I can't wait :)

I do get vivid dreams yes, they can be very disturbing. Sometimes God speaks through dreams or gives you people to pray for. Negative ones though are horrible. I sometimes find it helpful to pray before bed - you can say evening prayer from a book or perhaps pray a Psalm - Psalm 91 is excellent for praying at bedtime.

Bluetinkerbell · 22/01/2012 15:08

mhd have you booked your train ticket already? I would still love to come! :)

madhairday · 22/01/2012 15:19

Brilliant Blue! Have bumped the original thread. Not booked tickets yet - will look into times, we can travel together from Telford or meet in Brum if easier for you?

cottonmouth · 22/01/2012 15:20

totallyunheardof,

My DD is being baptised next month. She is 12, so taking herself to baptism. There are a group of about 6 of them from her church group, mixture of new Christian families and super-spiritual ones who don't believe in infant baptism - and DD, whose parents just didn't get round to it :).

I'm quite impressed. She has written her testimony and emailed it to the youth pastor, and asked someone to sponsor her (hold the bathrobe).

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she will clean the house and prepare all the food for the post-baptism party :) j/k.

It is definitely easier for them to do it as a group. I think it would be hard for any teenager or adult to present themselves for baptism at a regular sunday service. But if the church makes a fuss about it, and encourages a group to get together, it makes it a lot easier. They can also wait until confirmation, but if that is in a different church, they may still have their baptism in their home church.

TotallyUnheardOf · 22/01/2012 16:33

Thank you Cottonmouth. And well done to your dd. I hope it all goes well for her.

I have emailed the Canon Pastor (apparently he's the one; though I also picked him because he seems really nice!) and asked for his advice, as I couldn't find him after this morning's service. I think I may have over-shared (it's a bad habit I have!) in an attempt to justify why she hasn't been baptised yet, but hey ho... I pressed 'send' and then went Blush afterwards, so will have to brazen it out now.

I did talk to dd2 about this a year or so ago and she thought it was quite a good idea to be baptised and confirmed at the same time, but now she's saying she'd like to be baptised now, so we'll see what happens.

I can't see there being a group of them in our church (Anglican cathedral) but who knows...?

Dd1 came to church today and had a great time... but this may have been to do with the fact that they got really into some artwork that they were doing and wanted to finish it, so basically missed the whole of the service (normally they come back at the Peace). Ah well... she had fun, which is the main thing. Fingers crossed for next week...!

Blue... glad the Vocations Advisor has been in touch. I hope you manage to actually speak to one another soon!

thejaffacakesareonme · 22/01/2012 20:48

Dreams - I've been getting very vivid dreams recently but have been putting it down to pregnancy. They've not been negative and have almost all be about my family and the house and village where I grew up. It just seems to be a bit weird to be dreaming about a house I haven't lived in for not far off twenty years.

Blue - hope everything with the vocations advisor goes well.

TUO - great news about DD1.

MHD - the conference sounds amazing

gingercurl · 23/01/2012 09:16

Sorry, didn't mean to post and run. Busy weekend. Thank you for all the tips. I especially liked Maria's ideas. They made me laugh! DH liked them as well and thought we might try something like that if it becomes a frequent occurrence.

DutchOma · 23/01/2012 10:59

Whenever I dream about a house, it is always the house I grew up in. Not loved there for over 40 years.

Bluetinkerbell · 25/01/2012 11:21

Got hold of my Vocations Adviser yesterday! She sounded very nice and I will go over to hers on Tuesday afternoon to have our first meeting Grin
She hasn't asked me to prepare anything, so a little bit scared about what to expect, but we'll see...

madhairday · 25/01/2012 12:34

Yay Blue - it will be very relaxed I'm sure, just a nice chat :)

niminypiminy · 25/01/2012 13:55

Can I join in?

I've been lurking for a while and decided it was time to start posting here.

Bluetinkerbell, I am just coming to the end of the first stage of the discernment process -- the bit where you see the vocations advisor. If you would like to chat about the process do PM me. I'm sure it will be fine, but my experience is the frustrating waiting is part of the process, so do be prepared for more of it.

I love what DutchOma says about loving in a house.

Bluetinkerbell · 25/01/2012 13:57

hi niminypiminy welcome :)
I just have to dash off to go and do after school club, but will get back to you!
oooh yes... the waiting! I know, I sent my first email to DDO end of August Shock

madhairday · 25/01/2012 14:24

Hi niminy - really glad you posted. Have seen you around a couple of the more challenging threads at the moment and it's lovely not to be the lone voice and have someone else making intelligent comments - so thankyou!! :) Exciting that you're also going down that road - it's an amazing place to be.

DutchOma · 25/01/2012 15:00

Oh Niminy, welcome. I didn't realise I said 'loved' instead of 'lived', but yes, I did love that house, it was amazing.

OP posts:
nickelhasababy · 25/01/2012 15:04

welcome to the thread niminy : i wondered when you'd join us! Grin

PandaG · 25/01/2012 16:22

hello all and welcome niminy! Glad you are making sane intelligent comments alongside MHD - if I happen to read a controversial thread I usually find MHD has expressed her opinion so much more eloquently than I ever could, and is much better informed than me! I have posted 'I agree with MHD' a number of occasions!

Bit of exciting news from the Panda household, we have accepted an offer on our house, and had our offer accepted on a bigger one up the road. Starting to think we might actually move now after nearly 9 months on the market.

We really want to use our new house for God, it has a big kitchen/diner/family room which will be great for when our missional community meets with family, and has a decent sized front room which I can use for prayer meetings and the kids will be able to watch tv in the family room without being sent to bed at 7pm. Have asked God to shut the door if it is not right, and so far we have tried the handle and it is swinging open on well oiled hinges...Don't want to get too excited until we have signed contracts, but started to hope now! Smile

marmiteandhoney · 25/01/2012 16:23

Blue Glad you finally got hold of your Vocations Advisor. I spy sheets of Bishops' Requirements coming your way...

Hello Niminy. Not that I know you. But then I don't feel I really know anyone 'over here' yet...

Am meant to be writing an essay on the 'I am' sayings of Jesus. It was due last week but I was Very Not Well over Christmas so got an extension. Hoping he'll cope with not getting it tonight, either.

I did a very cool front cover by putting the scripture in Wordle, though :)

madhairday · 25/01/2012 16:31

Oh cool I love Wordle.Bet it looks great :) Hope you are feeling better now?

Panda - you always express yourself really well - don't put yourself down! And as I said on FB that's fab news about the house - it sounds so perfect - sounds like ours with the right amount of space for all that you do with the missional community (sounds right up our street, want to come join our team? Grin Wink ) That's great though and sounds a good answer to prayer if tentative atm!

nickel! You're being quiet. How are you? How is dd? What's happening? No mention of GK yet this thread? Gin

madhairday · 25/01/2012 16:32

Ah you see that's what the mention of GK does - forces me to need gin Grin

DutchOma · 25/01/2012 17:43

I'm SURE GK would approve.
