I know we've not officially finished the last one, but I wanted to get the link in before we ran out of room!

Everyone welcome - the aim of this thread is to generally chat about church life, or just gossip in general!
You don't have to be a regular church-goer, nor do you have to know what we're going on about!
It's not about debate, it's just about chatting
:)

I only know the Blaenwern version of that. Do they have the same words or are they entirely different? I do like it, but it always makes me want to cry because we sang it at my Gran's funeral.

PandaG · 11/01/2012 20:16

love love love 'Be thou my vision', especially the rocked up version we sometimes do at church. Wanting God to be the 'first in my heart' and 'whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O ruler of all'. But knowing I so often put myself, rather than Him first.

lostmywellies · 11/01/2012 20:28

Mmm.... love Love Divine - one of my wedding hymns! And while we're on the subject of great oldies, how about When I Survey the Wondrous Cross? Beautiful alto line harmonies, too - I think I sung that with DH and his sis at a church service last summer, unaccompanied, just the three of us. Shivers down my spine!

lostmywellies · 11/01/2012 20:31

I can't imagine a rocked-up version, would love to experience that. I only recently started thinking about the words of Be Thou when singing them and suddenly realised it wasn't a dull hymn at all, as I'd previously thought! Shock

nickelhasababy · 12/01/2012 10:16

Did you watch it Jaffa?
It's a choir anthem version with the tune written by Sydney Nicholson (who was the founder of the Royal School of Church Music)
It's the same words, but most hymnbooks miss out one of the verses, so this anthem has all the verses in it.
Not many people know this anthem version - when I did a google search on it, only 2 other churches have it listed in the their services.
lost - that's (when I survey) the one I put in my first link up there....
I do love the proper tune, but we like to sing that version when it pops up in the lectionary outside of Holy Week. :)

A bit late to the introductions - I'm only an occasional lurker/poster. I live in the south east, have 2dc's (3 and 5) and go to an evangelical CofE church. I like all kinds of music - modern (particularly Stuart Townend and similar) and traditional :)

thejaffacakesareonme · 12/01/2012 16:01

I did try to watch it, but my Mumsnet time coincides with the kids TV/Wii time, so it didn't go down too well! I was outvoted by two DSs wanting to play Donkey Kong. Are you back at work now? I bet your lovely baby is charming all the customers.

nickelhasababy · 12/01/2012 16:14

aw, poor you!
hope you get to watch it soon. :)

Yes, I'm bacl at work - started back on Monday. We're doing well, DD has indeed been charming everyone, and of course, she's sleeping through most of the day, so noone knows what I get put through at night! Shock

madhairday · 12/01/2012 17:42

Another huge Be Thou My Vision fan here

Lost, - not really rocky, more celtic rock, very lovely :)

I am a great fan of many old hymns, some favourites being And Can it Be, O Lord my God when I in awesome wonder, Thine be the Glory - could go on forever. Such amazing words and music

but not to organs

nickelhasababy · 12/01/2012 18:10

oh, but Thine be the Glory sounds amazing on the organ!
with trumpet stop - sounds really, really Glorious!
Like the whole of heaven has opened up and thrown God all over the world (oh, my lord, did I just spout such sentimental ..... Shock )

nickelhasababy · 12/01/2012 18:10
Wink
thanksamillion · 12/01/2012 21:02

Very poetic Grin

lostmywellies · 12/01/2012 21:16

nickel - Blush Ah yes, of course it was. The link's in purple so I definitely clicked it! Short term memory loss... Just relistened to it - yes, that sounds familiar, obviously didn't listen to the words very well. Or perhaps that's why I thought of it again 10 mins later and thought I'd had an original thought...!

lostmywellies · 12/01/2012 21:17

I thought a thought, but the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I thought.

:o

As my dds love to say!

lostmywellies · 12/01/2012 21:22

yy to organ for great old hymns, with lots of stops - and huge congregation for maximum impact. But I did enjoy the celtic rock, too - a good soundtrack to my laundry-sorting just now!

nickelhasababy · 13/01/2012 11:30

notevenamousie · 14/01/2012 07:40

Coming late to the party, love old hyms but with a rocky edge, bits of unaccompanied, etc. Organs - well, sometimes. Our usual organist is really poorly, and I do miss him so I must like them in some way.

Enjoyed that mhd thank you! I remember singing All Hail the Power of Jesus Name from being a Brownie and have a lovely electric guitar version that would sound fab on my sax if I could work out where to breathe!!

nickelhasababy · 14/01/2012 10:09

I hope your organist is better as soon as possible, mousie :(
(not just so he can play, though!)

I fidn that the best place to breathe when playing a wind/brass instrument is when the words do (like singing):
So, in All Hail, the breath marks would be (marked with </strong> ): All hail the power of Jesus? Name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem and crown Him, crown Him, crown Him
crown Him Lord of all. `

Crown Him, ye martyrs of your God, who from His altar call;
Extol the Stem of Jesse?s Rod, and crown Him crown Him, crown Him crown Him Lord of all.
etc

madhairday · 14/01/2012 10:50

Well nickel - I can't possibly argue with such awesome language - and love that that is how you experience it on the organ :) I feel a bit like that with a great band and 5000 people in a barn :) Isn't it great how God made us all so different :)

I am partying today - can't believe that only 2 wks out of hosp I am well enough, but having a late 40th party, girls night - so excited! Having an 80s themed night - well not clothes, couldn't do it to people (or myself) but music and games and singstar Grin

DutchOma · 14/01/2012 10:52

Happy party MHD

nickelhasababy · 14/01/2012 11:19

aw, I love dressing up though!

I made myself a Ra-Ra skirt for the last 80s party I went to! Grin
Enjoy it, but don't over-do it!

thejaffacakesareonme · 14/01/2012 12:12

Have a great party tonight MHD. It's ages since I've been to an 80's party. Are you having 80's food too? I can't help thinking about those oranges wrapped in tinfoil with cocktail sticks with cheese and pickled onions (or maybe that was just what happened at parties up here ...).

thanksamillion · 14/01/2012 13:10

Have a great party MHD!

Have you seen Youtube clip? It's been doing the rounds on fb and there's a discussion in chat which I think was indirectly sparked by it. Interesting!

nickelhasababy · 14/01/2012 13:55

very interesting.

DutchOma · 14/01/2012 16:18

he sentiment is right but I don't like the attempt at rhyming.
