Graham, Gloria and Gossip! Religion Chat thread (part 4)

I know we've not officially finished the last one, but I wanted to get the link in before we ran out of room!

Everyone welcome - the aim of this thread is to generally chat about church life, or just gossip in general!
You don't have to be a regular church-goer, nor do you have to know what we're going on about!
It's not about debate, it's just about chatting
:)

Oooh! It's ages since I've been to a Taize service! Our church normally only does one per year as standard at some point during Holy Week. Used to be a regular fixture when I was at university with our ecumenical chaplaincy group.

Bluetinkerbell - good luck with seeing the Vocations Advisor!

DS was really cute this morning. He's 2.6yo and for the last 6 months I've been saying the Lord's Prayer with him at bedtime and ocassionally another improvised prayer if we have something specific to ask for or give thanks for. This morning I got in the car to drive him to nursery and we were running late (due to a dirty nappy incident!) so as we drove off I said to DS, "Oh can we just ask God to keep the traffic clear for mummy" and he sat in his car seat and put his hands together so I said a quick prayer for clear traffic. Once I'd finished and said Amen, DS said "more prayers mummy!" and the journey progressed on in a similar fashion. After each prayer finished, he asked for more prayers! What a fantastic opportunity each morning to pray and share my faith with DS.
The other blessing is that DH (who doesn't go to Church but would be offended if anyone said he wasn't Catholic) has also started saying the Lord's Prayer with DS sometimes on the evenings that he does bedtime!

nickelbabe · 05/12/2011 22:05

that's one thing that we're kind of worried about, SES - neither of us has been brought up praying, but i think we both talk to God just randomly as part of our everyday-goingsabout.
I wouldn't feel comfortable actively praying with my DC, because it's not a normal part of our worship iyswim.

obviously, i want it to feel like it's important, but i don't know about the structure of prayer in normal life.

it's very confusing.
(and yes, i 've discussed this with DH, and he made the Hmm face. Grin )

but then, i suppose because both of us see music as our ministry, maybe that's how we'll pray with Isbn - singing/playing religious music instead of saying prayers. (i think we'd both be more comrtable with that, actually)

Nickel - I'm sure beautiful music as a form of prayer is just as pleasing to God if not more so! It will be lively for isbn to be brought up surrounded by lovely music. If I'm honest, the reason we say the Lord's Prayer most evenings is because that feels more comfortable to me to say with DS, unless there is something else specific that DS would understand (ITKWIM!?)

Anyway, isbn needs to hurry up and make an appearance and thus experience all the joys of her/his mummy, daddy and new world!

I think I've mentioned this on here before but with our DCs we have one of those plastic things that hang on the wall with wallets for photos. It's filled with pictures of family and friends and each evening one of the DCs chooses someone to pray for. Sometimes I'll update on that person but otherwise it's fairly general, or they say something about the day.

They normally say 'thank you Jesus for x...' It can be very short or very long but it gives a kind of structure and for us being so far away gives the chance to keep up with people. Somtimes they pray for random things like their toys but it's all good!

LittleDonkeyhadaMadHairDay · 06/12/2011 11:29

That's a great idea milly.

nickel I think it's fine to use music. We all communicate in the way comfortable to us and prayer is the same. Prayer books can be useful as well if you feel uncomfortable with just saying random prayers.

gingerbreadhousecurl · 06/12/2011 20:21

Nickel when it comes to family and loved ones, I think the best approach is exemplified by the quote sometimes attributed to St Francis: "Preach the Gospel always and, if necessary, use words."
Good luck on the other thread, btw. I hope you don't have to wait much longer. Prayers.

nickelbabe · 06/12/2011 20:23

thanks ginger :)

I like that quote.

Blue, how did the move go, how is the house?

Hoping everyone is OK.

MaryBeWaiting · 11/12/2011 12:56

Oo, has it happened?????

I am a bit urk because the choir mistress got uppity with me this morning. I'm taking DD to the taize service with me because I'm short on people who know the music. Only I received an email midweek that she was required at a choir practice this afternoon. This morning I was told she had to be there and I said no.

MaryBeWaiting · 12/12/2011 08:30

Prayers coming your way MHD

Cluckingmad · 12/12/2011 11:56

Hi have been lurking around this thread a while, just thought i'd introduce myself. Smile

MaryBeWaiting · 12/12/2011 12:03

Prayers MHD, and welcome to cluckingmad and graceinabundance :). That sums us up really as we're all clucking mad and we definitely have grace in abundance! :o

thanksamillion · 12/12/2011 12:22

Oh MHD feeling for you.

Welcome thread lurkers and newbies! Maybe someone can do a quick roundup of who everyone is? My internet it very slow today so probably not me Grin

gingerbreadhousecurl · 12/12/2011 12:28

Praying MHD.

Had an "interesting" experience during holy communion last night. At some point between receiving the bread and the wine, I had a really strong sensation/notion of atheist/agnostic DH kneeling next to me receiveing communion as well. Of course, this has never happened IRL, but it seemed so real, it startled me. Strange... Xmas Confused

gingerbreadhousecurl · 12/12/2011 12:28

must get on with work >

graceinabundance · 12/12/2011 14:31

Hi Grin

maybe dh will take communion soon for the first time who knows! xx

madangelhairday · 12/12/2011 17:18

Crap.

Got to go in tomorrow.

Don't know the timings yet but will be a two week course.

They bloody better do home IVs here. Or I'll be in for Christmas.

Crap.

I hate this.

DutchOma · 12/12/2011 17:24

Oh MHD, how difficult. It will be even more difficult becaue tis is a new set-up since you moved, isn't it. Praying that you will not be in for Christmas, that would be the crappiest of all crap.

PandaG · 12/12/2011 17:26

welcome grace and clucking. Xmas Smile

Pants MHD. Pants, pants, pants. Praying for you, and for the entire family, that you will get theh care you need, that you will be out for Christmas, that you will be healed. Hugs.

thejaffacakesareonme · 12/12/2011 19:27

MHD - poor you. I know that here they tend to get people home for Christmas if it is at all possible. I'd speak to the consultant about it rather than the nurses or the registrar because if there is a local protocol to keep patients on the ward for IV treatment he or she would have the clout to deviate from it whereas other staff may not.

thanksamillion · 12/12/2011 21:02

MHD oh gosh. You're in our prayers and will definitely be praying that you will be home (and well) for Christmas.
