I know we've not officially finished the last one, but I wanted to get the link in before we ran out of room!

Everyone welcome - the aim of this thread is to generally chat about church life, or just gossip in general!
You don't have to be a regular church-goer, nor do you have to know what we're going on about!
It's not about debate, it's just about chatting
:)

nickel - v exciting Grin
Hopefully isbn will time his/her arrival around your DH's organ duties :)
Good luck!

Hello AMerryScot - indeed all jesting meant in nicest way. It's nice to have a thread to chat about all sorts and be able to express different preferences. Thank God (literally!) for all the different types and styles of worship as it means God's graces and love are more accesible for us all in our humanity.

Sorry was going to post more but DS demanding my attention.

LittleDonkeyhadaMadHairDay · 03/12/2011 19:04

SES you put it so much better than me. That's exactly it :)

Oh nickel, honestly, don't worry about church, they can sort themselves out, and I reckon you should keep dh at home whatever...you need company in all these labour pains whether advanced or not! Are they getting closer?

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 19:25

yes, i think they are getting closer.

My friend (who i go swimming with) wants to come to the birth, as an extra help, so if DH has to go to church, then hopefully, she'll be here too, so he won't feel like he's leaving me on my own.

hello all, very excited nickel, and well done for hanging on until I'm back with the internet Grin. I think church can cope without you or Dh tomorrow. They'll all be too excited to worry about the music!

Hello AMerryScot I met two of your fellow countrymen today (assuming you are indeed a merry Scot) which is pretty remarkable since I'm in moldova.

amerryscot · 03/12/2011 19:40

Were they sober, TaM?

smellsofreindeersick · 03/12/2011 19:41

Phew I thought there was going to be blood in the aisles then. Are you really in labour Nickelbabe? Shouldn't there be fresh towels or boiling water or something?

At least pass round some biscuits if it's likely to be a long one.

PandaG · 03/12/2011 19:49

oooooooh Nickle in labour! Hooray! How exciting. Praying for you Nickle.

merryscot - hi and welcome Xmas Smile. Hope you stick around and get to know us and join in with the leg pulling!

I have to give a testimony in church tomorrow about what our smallgroup have been up to. Speaking in front of people doesn't bother me, but will be a bit nervous esp in the evening as we don't usually go to the evening service.

We had a house viewing yesterday - estate agent phoned and said they really liked the house but had a couple of others to see over the weekend. The viewers go to our mother church (which is at the end of the road) where we used to go before the congregation got too big and multiplied out. It would be utterly amazing if they want to buy our house so we can move nearer our church community, and I would be delighted if this house continues to be used to house small groups and church stuff. God so gave us this house nearly 13 years ago, it would be so fab if he could bless another family with it now.

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 20:23

it's going to be a long one, reindeer Grin

fingers crossed and prayers that it all works out how you want it to panda - sounds rather exciting!

sorry can't be with you for the rest of the evening nickel. It's 10.30pm and I've been up since 5 so I'm off to bed. Will be thinking about you though and logging in first thing in the morning.

aMerryScot - I think they were sober! It was only just lunch time so... Grin

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 20:34

Hi merryscot! I'm Scottish too - based in the central belt. I think it's a real strength of this thread that everyone comes from different backgrounds. All teasing is very light hearted.

Oooh Nickel - it is all very exciting. I've never experienced labour and so have no advice but will be thinking of you tonight. I'd suggest that DH should miss church tomorrow. I'm sure they could do without him for once. I mean, what if he missed the birth? Even if the other organist doesn't know all the music for tomorrow it is not the end of the world. I love the sound of unaccompanied singing and if the congregation have got a choir to lead them there's no excuse for them to go flat. I'm smiling at the thought of you cuddling your baby this time tomorrow. Please do keep us updated if you feel up to it.

nickelbabe · 04/12/2011 04:03

"if the congregation has got a choir leding them there's no excuse to go flat" ? Grin
you've read about my choir, haven't you? GrinWink

Nah, it's alright, the other organist is very good - he gets nervous, and usually practises all the music even if he's not supposed to be playing that bit.
our anthem during communion is usually unaccompanied. But when DH went to norfolk in October, the choir suddenly decided that they didn't really know the psalm they were supposed to be sinigng Hmm and bascially forced OtherOrganist to decide to do a little hymn instead. which went rather disasterously wrong because they didn't know it as well as they thougt they did (it was O for a Closer walk with God, and there are notes at the beginning of line that can be long or short, depending on which hymn book you use - the Hideous Orange book has short notes, so that's what OtherOrganist played, but the choir, in its "let's never listen to what the organ's doing" wisdom tried to sing them as long notes, so ended up being out oftime. You can actually hear on the recording that a few members were doing it as the book, and most weren't. it sounded a complete mess because noone was listening.)
If i hadn't witnessed that debacle, i'd have more faith in the choir coping without him.

Nickel - sorry things are going a bit slower than you'd hoped. Maybe this baby will be a really chilled out wee character.

We were singing psalm 19 at church this morning. It's years since I've sung a psalm and I remembered that when I was a kid the hymn book was divided in two and the first part had psalms and paraphrases in it. At most services we would sing at least one psalm or paraphrase. The rhythm of psalm 19 was very regular in style. I wonder how it would sound if you changed it to a more syncopated rhythm? May try it when I've got time.

nickelbabe · 04/12/2011 18:49

(actually that's a lie: i am in the study, but the Psalter might be downstairs. DH has grabbed it for me)

chilled out just like its dad. Its mum however, is very impatient and likes things to happen when they're supposed to happen.

Led an Advent Taize last night, there were 20 of us (9 of the youth group came)! I was expecting a poor turnout, but optimistically printed... 20 copies! :o For accompaniment we had a baby grand and a violin, which worked quite well together (husband and wife playing), even if not in the spirit of Taize (although I would argue it is, since Taize is go with the flow, go with what you've got). Spiritually speaking, it was lovely! :)

I wrote a new meditation for the occasion, all about going from darkness to light, and of course that gave lots of opportunity to light candles :o. I also managed to set fire to my copy of the service, but fortunately was able to put it out before I burnt too much of it Xmas Blush

nickelbabe · 05/12/2011 09:09

Bluetinkerbell · 05/12/2011 09:45

MaryBeWaiting · 05/12/2011 15:21

Fantastic bluetinkerbell :)

I have also singed my hair at a Taize service...

LittleDonkeyhadaMadHairDay · 05/12/2011 15:23

Oooh Blue...excited for you!

nickelbabe · 05/12/2011 15:31

oh, you lot are evil.
now i've just had a discussion with DH about how it might be nice for our church to do a taize service Angry
Obviously, not with us involved Grin, but as an early evening service, I thought maybe in the south Transept with chairs in a circle, and candles to light, meditations being spoken while a Taize CD plays, where they could sing along or just listen.

(and i have no idea what Taize services are like, but I like some of the music)

LittleDonkeyhadaMadHairDay · 05/12/2011 15:38

Xmas Grin
nickelbabe · 05/12/2011 16:00

got to have something to do to take my mind off the waiting!

I even sorted out the WI carol service sheets for the choir last night - hadn't got round to making hymn sheets for the congregation, so they're going to have to make do with the crappy words from the Hideous Orange book (all instead of men, pratting around with the number of verses, missing out the last verse of Once in Royal etc), but I forgot all about it, and i can't be arsed to do it all now.
but at least the choir will have the correct music, hymn numbers written in ,and will be able to do the descants.

Bluetinkerbell · 05/12/2011 17:19
