Graham, Gloria and Gossip! Religion Chat thread (part 4)

I know we've not officially finished the last one, but I wanted to get the link in before we ran out of room!

Everyone welcome - the aim of this thread is to generally chat about church life, or just gossip in general!
You don't have to be a regular church-goer, nor do you have to know what we're going on about!
It's not about debate, it's just about chatting
:)

I didn't go to choir lat night.
this week I have been very lazy - I haven't done any of my normal evening activities Grin

But, by God, is evening television boring! Shock
I thought I'd spent evenings relaxing watching lovely tv, but no, i've spent evenings bored out of my brain channel-hopping (and keeping my live-birth thread open to post on when nothing happens again)

the other organist has been told that he's effectively being banned from playing at the WI carol service - this service has been planned for 3 months (or longer!) - he's on JSA, and he has to do this stupid course that does nothing (ie it's "here's how to write your name"), and they've changed the day of the course next wee kfrom Friday to Wednesday.
He's tried to tell them he can't go because he's got another commitment, but they won't be reasoned with.
So basically, the people who are supposed to be helping him get back into work say that they don't care about commitments he has made. Hmm
He can't do anything about it, because they've told him if he doesn't turn up, thy will stop his money for 6 months.

oooh mhd I'm so sorry you still feel horrible! No you are not BU for screaming! I would!

I'm a bit tired and grumpy! we had to get up early to get to a birthday party from 9 tot 11 this morning. it was nice, DD had a fabulous time. DH and I had a good chat with friends.
Just being a bit stressed about the move next week. Friends we were at party with said they are going to help with move, they are getting a van. But when we ask when we can have it from, they avoid the question. I have to work on Saturday from 10-12 for our Christingle service. And friend has a hairdresser appointment at 9.15am... DH is getting worried nothing will happen in the morning and wants to go rent a van so he can start at 8am. But he doesn't want to hurt our friends feelings by doing that.. pff difficult situation.

LittleDonkeyhadaMadHairDay · 03/12/2011 12:53

Oh that is difficult Blue - think you need to ask them outright, eg perhaps you could ask what time the van will arrive? It's a reasonable question, so you know the parameters, then if they say can't be til afternoon you'll have to say you have to move in the morning, so thanks so much but will need to get our own, that would surely be an OK thing to ask? Thinking of you.

nickel - aaagh re the JSA thing and your organist - that is awful, actually, as you say, they should be encouraging people to honour committments and voluntary stuff Angry

smellsofreindeersick · 03/12/2011 13:05

Erm, hello.

Please carry on, I'm just stopping by to say hi.

Bluetinkerbell · 03/12/2011 13:05

I'll ask DH to check with them tomorrow after church, as I will be in the other church in our benefice for the christingle service.
They seem very laid back about it, while DH and I are worrying about not getting everything moved at the weekend. as we do have to added pressure of everything needing to be out of here on Monday morning

MIL will come and help so that's very kind and is going to be useful! :)

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 13:09

Hello smellsofreindeersick - lovely name Envy

That's good about MIL.

smellsofreindeersick · 03/12/2011 13:19

Oh way thank you. It's just graphic enough isn't it? Nice.

I should probably go back through this thread and see what you're talking about but I'm not sure I'd have much to contribute.

I did find the Christian festival bit interesting. We've only been to Greenbelt and I was a bit Hmm about it. Mind you DH was working so we got in free.

Sorry, I've gone backwards a bit there! So what kind of churches do you all attend?

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 14:04

we're just rambling, mainly Grin

we have a running joke about Graham Kendrick - we seem to be split down the middle on him (i think he's dreadful, but mhd wishes she'd married him instead of her DH Wink)
and other than that, we just talk about what we've done during the week, how our church life is progressing, interspersed with deep philosophical questions and stuff on the bible.
but it's mostly gossip.
Grin

I'm a traditionalist, so I go to a 12th century church (that's the building not the style!) and am in a robed choir (it's c of e), and i'm married to the Organist and Choir Master.

Nickel, he wants to speak to his MP. Just ring his/her office and ask them to intervene. One phone call from the MP usually does the trick.

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 15:20

do you think that would work?
he' not good at confrontation.

OP posts:
amerryscot · 03/12/2011 15:22

Why is Graham Kendrick dreadful?

Is it dreadful that he reaches millions of Christians and brings people to the Christian faith?

I will admit he's a bit last decade, but Servant King is still very powerful.

DutchOma · 03/12/2011 15:24

It doesn't have to be a confrontation, he is just asking for some help. It's difficult because it is such a short time before he needs an answer. Would it help if your husband spoke on his behalf? Saying that it is important that he helps with this service because it may further his job prospects? Ask to speak to the manager of the job centre, not the monkey who runs the course.

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 15:29

I'll suggest it to DH and see what he thinks.
thank you.

amerryscot - personal taste Grin

OP posts:
amerryscot · 03/12/2011 16:43

If it's a case of personal taste, should you really be calling what other Christians value as 'dreadful'?

I have a hard time with this.

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 16:45

I didn't - i said, "i think he's dreadful"

don't worry, it's a light-hearted thing - it's a running joke.
:)

OP posts:
amerryscot · 03/12/2011 16:48

I'm not getting the nuance.

Shall I say what I think of vestments, organs and choirs and how dreadful I think they are?

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 16:53

yes, you can if you like Grin
that's what this thread is about - we're not judging each other on what our tastes are (MHD hates traditional choral music and detests organs), but we're chatting and gossiping about what we do in our churches, and in our faith.
We welcome all opinions, and we often tease each other about the kind of worship we prefer. MaryBS likes vestments, and others don't.

It's all personal taste - the most important thing is that we like each other and that we join together as christians :)

OP posts:
amerryscot · 03/12/2011 16:54

I can't see how trashing one another's traditions brings you closer. Is this how mission is done in your churches?

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 16:58

I promise you, it's all done in good fun.

OP posts:
MaryBeWaiting · 03/12/2011 17:52

We're just teasing each other. No hurt is meant by it, honestly.

LittleDonkeyhadaMadHairDay · 03/12/2011 18:01

Hello amerryscot

I think we've come to a good place when we can gently rile one another while appreciating each other's traditions. Nickel knows very well that while I am not an organ fan I know that it helps her and many others worship, so I can rile her about it as she can me and my charismatic ways. It's a lovely friendly thread and we all have big love for each other

amerryscot · 03/12/2011 18:41

Gloves off, then Xmas Grin

nickelbabe · 03/12/2011 18:46

I might not go to church in the morning.

ooh, that sounds completely off-the-wall! Grin

i'm hoping to be in the final stages of labour by then (or snuggling up t oa new-born)
i've said DH probably should go, but he's feeling all guilty about it "what if you need me?"
I'm sure Other Organist can manage to play the whole service, but not sure the choir can cope without him.
And the Blind Service is in the afternoon - so he can't miss that!
