I know we've not officially finished the last one, but I wanted to get the link in before we ran out of room!

Everyone welcome - the aim of this thread is to generally chat about church life, or just gossip in general!
You don't have to be a regular church-goer, nor do you have to know what we're going on about!
It's not about debate, it's just about chatting
:)

Too late. It's stuck and now I'll have Engelbert Humperdink going round, round and round in my head. Grrrr.
Serves me right for lurking, I suppose.

Tinselitis · 02/12/2011 22:22

Hi all. Been having some thoughts/feelings today and didn't know where to go to share them so thought I'd try here.

I have been an atheist all my life. I have always been very anti religion - 'opium of the people' etc. I did do the RCIA course a few years ago, as my husband is a (lapsed-ish) Catholic but wanted our children to be baptised. I absolutely hated it Sad. I just thought it was all complete bullshit and if anything it turned me off religion even more, if that was possible. I also hated the two Catholic churches near us - found them unfriendly and the priests pompous gits, and struggled with the homophobic, anti-abortion stance.

However, in the last few days I have had the strongest urge to pray and to go to church (haven't been yet). I have no idea where this has come from or why it is happening. I just wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom as to where I go from here?

nickelbabe · 02/12/2011 22:24

dunno.
Things like hat do happen.
You don't have to do it in a catholic church, though.
maybe you should just find one that's open during the day and go and sit down and see where it takes you?

If yo udon't like the idea ofthe catholic church, you can try a local parish church of england church, or even one of the other denominations.

Tinselitis · 02/12/2011 22:33

Thanks nickelbabe.

My family are Northern Irish Catholic (big quite religious family, although parents have both rejected religion long ago) and it almost feels wrong to go to a Protestant church. I know that is ridiculous Shock.

What church would you recommend? I mean, what sort of denomination? Church of England? (live in London now).

MaryBeWaiting · 03/12/2011 09:13

I know what you mean Tinselitis about it feeling wrong (love the name by the way). I was brought up RC, part of a very devout family and am now an Anglican. If you live in London then you'll have a huge choice, I wouldn't know where to tell you to begin!

The Church of England has a huge advantage in that there is a broad spectrum of worship styles, but it does mean that unless you find out more about the church you are interested in, you won't know what sort you'd be getting! :). There is a website www.achurchnearyou.com/ on which many/most C of E churches put info, and you could look on there, or see if they have a website if you have a particular church in mind.

LittleDonkeyhadaMadHairDay · 03/12/2011 10:48

Hello Tinselitis

Can't really add to what nickel and Mary have said but just wanted to say hello. And to encourage you to listen to your feelings - sometimes things like that happen for a good reason. As for the Catholic thing, it depends whether you feel going there would bring back the negative feelings you have had before, and whether it might be good to test this out on something new, eg a C of E church, which as Mary said range hugely in style. I think nickel's idea of finding one open in the day is a good one, so not nec going along to a service but going to just sit and be for a bit, and see where it takes you.

You are more than welcome to talk about it all here :)

How are you nickel...working? Grin I know you.

I'm pretty shoddy, in fact have had to cancel 3 weekend visits, totaly gutted, including Blue :( AIBU to scream at this disease?

DutchOma · 03/12/2011 10:49

Hallo Tinselitis, No idea about churches in London, I'm afraid, you'll really have to try for yourself.

I wonder if you would read a book like Stephen Gaukroger's It makes sense?

I think it would explain a lot about how you are feeling and might give you ideas about how you want to move forward with your new found feelings.

On a totally different note: Quote from Jeff Lucas this morning: there are theists (those who believe in God) atheists (those who do not believe in God) and apatheists(who couldn't care less either way).

And on a completely different note again:- my typing takes a lot of time to print, but only on this thread, it will do perfectly well on AIBU, or any other place. Anybody got any idea what that is all about? Has been doing it for a few days and it feels almost foolish to mention it on site stuff if it is only me.

DutchOma · 03/12/2011 10:52

MHD Sorry to hear about your cancelled visits. I wonder if you might be allergic to that donkey of yours?
You are NBU to want to scream.
