madhairday · 25/06/2011 14:54

That's dahn sarf somewhere, yes?

Grin
nickelbabe · 25/06/2011 15:00

no such thing as an ignorant northerner! Grin

yes, it's in Kent.
(would be so much better in the north....)

madhairday · 25/06/2011 15:43

I'm sort of an ignorant all-overer really - I have at points in my life lived in Sussex, London and Luton so I can't claim to be all north-of-watford-gap green Grin

nickelbabe · 25/06/2011 16:10

it's okay, noone knows where sittingbourne is (i'm sure most of the people who were born here have never been outside of it.... Hmm )
Grin

MaryBS · 25/06/2011 21:29

I knew where Sittingbourne was :)

DutchOma · 26/06/2011 08:14

I know where Sittingbourne is. We went through there on our way to sheerness on our way to Holland on the Olau line. That doesn't exist any more but was a wonderful journey to Holland.
I'm going to a Baptist church in Eindhoven today if I can manage to get a lift there.
My brother has gone to do complicated things with canoes, something to do with scouting so won't be available for lifts.
We went to an organ recital yesterday, dsil came as well, something they would never have considered if I hadn't been here. None of us were very chuffed with the loud 19/20th century works, but enjoyed the Bach that was on the programme.

thejaffacakesareonme · 26/06/2011 08:39

Sittingbourne? Anywhere south of Berwick is a bit of a mystery to me! Slightly nervous about taking the dcs to church this am. I will not be able to sit next to them and expect ds2 will start to play up.

thanksamillion · 26/06/2011 11:51

how did it go jaffa? Why couldn't the DCs sit next to you? In our church the children all sit at the front but mine often choose to sit next to me - they small enough to get away with it for the moment but not for much longer Grin

madhairday · 27/06/2011 09:30

Morning everyone, happy sunny monday :)

Hope it went well in the end jaffa?

Had a brilliant day yesterday for dd's confirmation. She was totally made up, and had so much support from family and friends. She was overwhelmed really, and said that at the moment the bishop put his hands on her head to do the 'confirm, o Lord' bit she felt something like water going through her and 'it was like I was thirsty before but then I wasn't.' How cool is that? Still grinning for her. She loved every minute and looked so beautiful in her new dress too :)

How is everyone today? It's toooooo hot

nickelbabe · 27/06/2011 09:52

wow, DutchOma - that must have been a while ago - I can't remember any passenger boats going from Sheerness (I've lived here nearly 10 years)

what were the loud 19/20th century pieces? Have yo ugot a programme (oh God, I think DH's organ geekiness is starting to rub off on me! help! Shock )

how'd it go jaffa ? was it as bad as you worried? (or did you jut get to enjoy the service? Grin )

that is so cool mhd - the Gospel reading this week was all about Water of Life, so that's perfect :)
Glad she enjoyed it.

nickelbabe · 27/06/2011 09:53

yes, it is toooooo hot.
My shop is quite cool at the moment, but it'll heat up when the sun comes over this afternoon.

DutchOma · 27/06/2011 11:02

Yes, it was uite a while ago. We first went before ds was born (1977) and it finished probably about 15 years ago. We're now sometimes using Harwich-Hook, but this time I went by Eurostar. Can't believe I'll be home again the day after tomorrow.

Programme on Saturday was Joseph Jongen Sonata Eroica, then Bach Schmucke dich o liebe Seele, then Dupre,Variations sur un Noel (Adam lay Ybounden), then Bach, An Wasserflussen Babylon and lastly Max Reger, Fantasie und Fuge uber den Namen BACH. Especially the first and the last were too loud for me to hear anything in them.

Yesterday I went to a Dutch Baptist church which was a very strange experience. All but one of the songs I have sung in English and to be singing them in Dutch was most peculiar. The sermon too, was nothing out of the ordinary, apart from that it was in Dutch. The people, well, in our church we have a welcome team which would have made sure I didn't get out of church without an offer of coffee. As it was someone asked on the way in whether I was a visitor, but after that nobody really talked to me, which was not that encouraging. Don't think I will go back there.

nickelbabe · 27/06/2011 11:10

I know DH likes Dupre, and I remember him saying something about having to learn that one about the name BACH when he did his organ exams.

that's an odd attitude. As if they thought that because you were a visitor that you wouldn't be coming again so why bother. :(

DutchOma · 27/06/2011 11:12

Yes, I thought they would want to know after the service what church I came from, what I thought of the service and whether it was very different, but no, it really was very clickey (sp) and I did not feel at home at all.

thanksamillion · 27/06/2011 12:02

Sorry to hear that you weren't welcomed DutchOma. I rather think the Dutch Baptist church is similar to the Moldovan one (except you wouldn't get near the door here for kisses and welcomes from the ladies!). Is it men on one side, women on the other? It is here, and headscarves for married women and definitely no trousers Hmm

madhairday · 27/06/2011 12:27

That's a shame DO. When are people going to get it? What church should be? aaagh.

milly, wow really no trousers and headscarves? Cripes, I'd find that hard, at least though you have a good welcome there which is fantastic :)

Hello nickel. Hope you're not overheating.

DutchOma · 27/06/2011 12:36

No, it wasn't. It was totally the same as it would have been at home. Quite a fes other ladies wore trousers and not a head scarf to be seen. It was very much like it was at home, apart from the fact that we have people looking out for strangers. That was the flaw here. They were pleasant enough, smiley and friendly, but nothing else.

nickelbabe · 27/06/2011 12:40

mhd - i am overheating. I don't like it.

thejaffacakesareonme · 27/06/2011 18:35

I chickened out of taking the DSs with me - DH was staying at home and it was easier to leave them with him. THey usually sit with me for the first 15 minutes until the kids go out but I was doing something else yesterday and couldn't sit with them. It'll be fine next week 'cause I'll be back with them as usual.

Heat? Oh I am jealous. We've had a miserable summer so far, with rain every weekend for the last couple of months. I think it may have reached 14 degress today ...

DO - the confirmation sounds amazing.

thejaffacakesareonme · 27/06/2011 21:27

I've just been checking my e mail and see that I've had an e mail from Open Doors, a Christian Charity that helps persecuted Christians worldwide. Don't know if this is of interest to anyone, but they have a job vacancy for an administrator. They're based in Witney. I've no idea where everyone is based but thought I'd just mention the job incase it is of any interest to anyone.

nickelbabe · 28/06/2011 10:00

I would be so good at that job!
If only they'd do a work-from-home job....

madhairday · 28/06/2011 13:30

Mee too nickel! wish they would do from home jobs, would be so easy with computers the way they are, but it's very rare, which was why I was so excited about that job the other week. Pah.

nickelbabe · 28/06/2011 13:40

exactly.
why the hell do you need to be in the office for an admin job anyway?
Confused

you only need to pick up a phone, or even do a skype thing if you're desperate to see them face-to-face.

nickelbabe · 28/06/2011 13:41

i'm actually quite tempted to apply for the job and suggest that I do it from "home" in exchange for a lower wage.
they can always forward mail to me in bulk, if that's the worry.
